With a little pre-planning, an advisor might have collected a stack of used gardening magazines that can be cut up and display boards made explaining different types of gardens. 5. Also with pre-planning, work on indoor gardens with materials set aside for rainy day by the advisor. 6. Use the rainy day to go through all the seed catalogs and prepare your ideas for orders for next season. One thing you could do is to create a "rainy day committee" and charge them with planning things to do on rainy days. Gardening is a year round, every climate, everyday activity. Sometimes the rainy days are the best.

Homework also teaches you to be more responsible - you learn how to set deadlines and keep to them, how to stay on task and finish a hard job, and how to find information.

Spelling is not something you look up answers for. You just need to memorize the correct way to spell each word. Here are some tips to help with spelling: * Learn some basic word parts. English, especially, borrows words from all sorts of other languages, and if you get familiar with some of the basic root words, you will be more likely to be able to spell new words. For example, if you know that "Wiki" is slang for "quick" then you can remember the word WikiAnswers better. * Repeat. Memorizing spelling words is best done by just going over and over them until you remember them. Practice with someone else so that they can call out a word and you can spell it back to them.

Some ideas to motivate yourself include: * work with a friend * choose a topic that interests you * think about the pressure that bulids when you procrastinate * make a bargain with yourself- work for 30-45 minutes then treat yourself to something really special * Look at the assignment as something you are choosing to do rather than something you must do. Realize that getting the paper done will give you peace of mind.

Some people have different learning types. The main three are Visual, Tactile/Kinesthetic, and Auditory. If you are a visual learner, you usually use visual cues and understand better when reading or watching. Tactile/Kinesthetic learning works more with the sense of touch and prefers to do experiments, or simply excecute what is being taught. Auditory learners work with hearing, and prefer dictations, and listening to what people say.

If you can determine what sort of learner you are, possibly using an online quiz, it will help you in creating notes and you will ultimately succeed.

As a professor, I'd say no. I know that students would disagree, but homework can actually be quite useful. Yes, some assignments can seem like busy-work, but some assignments can be thought-provoking, and give you a chance to apply the concepts you've learned (and show the teacher you understood the material). Homework gives you practice and it reinforces what you've been studying. So, for those reasons, I think we need to keep it around.
