It was a part of the turkish kingdom, Al Saltanah Al Osmaniyyah. Then after the World War 1 , this kingdom lost in the battle against France and England, some of the causes were the Arabs (and lebanese) revolutions. France promised Arabs that they'll give them total freedom if they made revolutions agains't Al Osmaniyyah, but that didn't happen thought the Arabs kept their words and helped France win the War. After the War ended, France took advantage of this and dominated Lebanon and half Syria, while England dominated Palestine and Irak, then gave Palestine to the Juwish so they can build Israel and help them in World War 2. But the arab revolution kept on going even after World War 2, and they succeeded in getting their freedom and kick France outside Lebanon and England outside Irak. Too bad they couldn't kick the Jewish out of Palestine Too.

Lebanon is a predominantly Muslim nation with a significant Christian minority. It is not Jewish. Indeed, only Israel can be described as a Jewish state.

Even if Israel had petroleum to export, it is unlikely that it would be able to join OPEC because over half of that organization's membership does not recognize the State of Israel.

You need to be more specific about which war in Lebanon you are referring to. There have been several in the last 30 years.

If you are referring to the latest clashes in southern Lebanon (circa 2006), that fighting was between the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) and Hezbollah (one of the major paramilitary powers in Lebanon). The United States was not involved militarily.

The Lebanese Civil War of the 1980s involved various Lebanese factions, Syria, and Israel in addition to foreign peacekeeper forces.

Lebanese people themselves are divided into 2 major ethnic groups.

1- Whites or Caucasians , these are mostly Christian Lebanese that did not mix with the Arab invaders of Lebanon. Christian Lebanese are from Phoenician/Aramaic ancestry mostly found in Mount Lebanon, they mixed extensively with crusaders and other west Europeans.

2- Arabian/Turkish/African ancestry, those are mostly Muslim Lebanese. The Arab/Muslim invasion brought several dark skinned Arabians that settled on the Lebanese coast and mixed with Ottoman and North African invaders.

The PLO set up in southern Lebanon for two reasons: the first is that none of their "brother Arab" countries wanted them--they were driven out of Syria and Kuwait, and while a large number lived in Jordan, they were considered "other" by the dominant Hashemites. Lebanon accepted some of them, although many remained in refugee camps. The other reason was that southern Lebanon is bordered by the state of Israel, (much of which until 1948 was known as Palestine; both Jews and Arabs dispute which group should own the land). Lebanon is definitely not a third world country. When people say a third world country, they directly think about living in tents, with no running water, and living on a dollar a day. But that is, by far, not the case is Lebanon.

i don't want to jynx the country but lately things have been perfect. yes i think there were some casualties, especially in the 1983 terrorist bomb attack killed 241 American troops mostly marines.

hmm Christmas :). well we don't like turkeys in Lebanon but we also don't have a specific menu for Christmas, most people however eat poultry (taste just like chicken :) ) and/or meat. for desert there is a special treat which is a cake-like desert called buche de noel ( absolutely NO relation to bush or his family ).
