How did the us prepare for WW2?
The US was more prepared, than some historians would like their students to believe. The US had reinstated the military draft well over one year before the Pearl Harbor attack; and had been geared up for war material production long before entering the war; producing tanks, ships, airplanes, rifles, machineguns, etc. to supply to Great Britain and Russia (USSR). In effect...the US was just waiting for the word (to enter the war) (which came in the form of the Pearl Harbor attack on Dec. 7, 1941).

What do the ashes remind us of for Lent?
• Ashes in the Bible • "O daughter of my people, gird on sackcloth, roll in the ashes." (Jeremiah 6:26) "I turned to the Lord God, pleading in earnest prayer, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes." (Daniel 9:3) "When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes." (Jonah 3:6) "And all the Israelite men, women and children who lived in Jerusalem prostrated themselves in front of the temple building, with ashes strewn on their heads, displaying their sackcloth covering before the Lord." (Judith 4:11; see also 4:15 and 9:1) "That day they fasted and wore sackcloth; they sprinkled ashes on their heads and tore their clothes." (1 Maccabees 3:47; see also 4:39) Jesus refers to the use of sackcloth and ashes as signs of repentance: "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes." (Matthew 11:21, Luke 10:13) • Ash Wednesday • As the beginning of Lent, Ash Wednesday calls us to the conversion journey that marks the season. As those preparing to join the Church enter the final stage of their preparation for the Easter sacraments, we are all called to walk with them so that we will be prepared to renew our baptismal promises when Easter arrives. When we receive ashes on our foreheads, we remember:
• Who we are
• That we are creatures of the earth
. "Remember that you are dust"
• That we are mortal beings
. "and to dust you will return"
• That we are baptized
• That we are people on a journey of conversion
. "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel"
• That we are members of the body of Christ
• That smudge on our foreheads will proclaim that identity to others, too
How many people were in Jerusalem on palm Sunday?
Palm Sunday was the week before Passover. In that time. Passover was a major pilgrimage festival, when Jews from around the Roman Empire felt an obligation to travel to Jerusalem, and when many Jews from around Judea and Galilee did make the pilgrimage. A week before the festival, significant numbers of Jews would have been making their way into Jerusalem, although the peak flow would have happened in the following days, and various rooms for rent would have been starting to fill up.
When is lent and when is advent?
Lent is the 40 days before Easter and Advent is the 4 Sundays before Christmas.
Palm Sunday falls the Sunday before Easter. Everyone is given palm leaves as a symbol of Jesus's ride into Jerusalem.
On Ash Wednesday (or right before it, not sure about this part), the palm leaves from the previous year are burned, and that is what is used to begin the season of Lent.
Is it mandatory to go to church on holy Thursday?
It's not mandatory to go to Mass on Holy Thursday but it is strongly recommended. You learn more about the Holy Triduum and it's relaxing.
The original account of Jesus riding on a donkey on Palm Sunday, in Mark 11:8-9, does not say that the people used palm leaves (NAB): "Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord."
The time of the Passover is too early for leafy branches (except palms), which the author of John's Gospel recognised, changing this reference to 'palm branches', thus creating our modern tradition of Palm Sunday.
John Shelby Spong (Jesus for the NonReligious) says that Mark's Gospel seems to have taken the reference to 'leafy branches' from the traditional Jewish observance of Sukkoth at an entirely different time of year:
The ]ewish eight day celebration of the harvest, known as Sukkoth, and also called the Festival of the Tabernacles or Booths, was probably the most popular holiday among the Jews in the first century. In the observance of Sukkoth, worshippers processed through Jerusalem and in the Temple, waving a bunch of leafy branches made of willow, myrtle and palm. As they waved these branches in that procession, the worshippers recited words from Psalm 118, the psalm normally used at Sukkoth. Among these words were "Save us, we beseech you, O Lord." Save us in Hebrew is hosianna or 'hosanna'. This is typically followed by "Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. (Psalm 118:25-6)."
The author of John's Gospel is known to have copied the account in Mark's Gospel, but amended this detail in order to make it more realistic. It is because of John's awareness and correction of the original error that we have palm leafs on Palm Sunday.
