Where did leukemia first start?

It is not possible to trace back the earliest historical appearance of leukemia. Bear in mind that throughout most of human history, leukemia would not have been correctly diagnosed if someone did have it, because of a lack of medical knowledge. In pre-historic times this disease or pretty much any other disease would have been seen as an attack by evil spirits. In later ages it might have been described as an ague or some other such vaguely defined illness. Not until the 20th century would it have been diagnosed as leukemia. But if I were to venture a guess, I would say that leukemia has probably been around since the earliest days of the human species, about half a million years ago. Though from my knowlege and reaserch, has shown that the first sign of Leukemia was in 1902 in Greece... The male died several weeks later, with only flue like signs. Though no one is able to tell if it was Luekemia but that is the best sign.

What are the odds of beating leukemia?

I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on February 23rd, 2010. I went through 3 rounds of heavy chemotherapy, 15 rounds of total body radiation, and on May 19th, 2010 I received a bone-marrow transplant from my brother, a perfect match. I am a living example that Leukemia can be beat. I still have a long way to go in terms of recovery, and the chance that it can come back will always be there; however, I do not think like that. I am doing great with the exception of being a little skinny, but that too will come back.

Have you been recentley diagnosed? If so, the most important thing you can do for yourself is keep a positive attitude. It is a learning time, and it is important not to ask "why me" or to fill your soul with hatred and anger. It is time to step back and ask yourself "What have I been doing wrong?" and "What do I need to do to change?".

I had a friend who had leukemia and he went blind. I believe they said it was a result of the mediations but then they told him it was a result in optic nerve damage from the leukemia. So I'm not sure what actually caused it and I don't think the doctors knew either. Not sure of this helps.

Why is there no cure for cancer?

The simplest answer to your question is that cancer is not a single disease. The term cancer actually references many different diseases that differ greatly in their origins as well as their underlying biology.

Many researchers believe there is a cure for each one of those diseases.

Researchers have already found a cure for some kinds of cancer, if they are caught in time (see links below).

Researchers have already found a way to prevent some kinds of cancer.

Alas, there still remain many kinds of cancer that we do not yet know how to prevent or cure.

Researchers still hope that, with a bit of creativity and a lot of testing, we will eventually have cures for these other kinds of cancer.

What is pre-malignant lesion?

A pre-malignant lesion is a lesion that, while not cancerous, has strong potential for becoming cancerous.

An example would be a callous-like area between the cheek and gum where someone who chews tobacco keeps the tobacco plug. Given enough time, that area will often turn cancerous.

Sometimes a chronic irritation from an ill-fitting denture can be called pre-malignant.

The cause of a pre-malignant lesion should be determined and eliminated, and the lesion should usually be biopsied to make sure it is not cancer.

Can a baby have leukemia?

My son was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder at the age of 20 months. While receiving therapy. He displayed many symptoms of early Autism but no one wanted to put that label on him yet. So about 6 months later, just when we were getting into the swing of things and I was learning everything that i could about his disability when he fell ill with a horrible fever. It was so bad and wouldn't break so I rushed him into the nearest er. Blood tests that were performed came back abnormal and they wanted to check further. More blood tests and a lumbar puncture were to confirm that my son was severely anemic, neutropenic, and needed several blood transfusions. He was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) Almost 3 years later, here we are with only a few more months of chemotherapy to go (he is 5 1/2 years old today) and his school wants to do more evaluations on him since he will start kindergarten next year. His speech issues and sensory problems are getting better, but he remains still very developmentally delayed. His recent evals conclude that my son is on the Autistic spectrum, moderate to severe in some areas. He cannot continue schooling at that school because they do not have all the resources to care for a child that severe. So off to a new school come August of 2011. I am very happy that after all this time, he has finally been diagnosed. But at the same time, I am heart broken once again. Another diagnosis, more therapy. On the bright side, he will be cancer free come July 2011! For such a young boy, he has been though an awful lot, but everything happens for a reason. So to answer your question, I cannot totally answer that. I do know that my son has Autsim and cancer (leukemia) but I am pretty sure that this is very rare as I cannot find any information anywhere on the internet. I cannot find a connection. The only thing I have come up with is that maybe my son has a weak immune system and maybe something triggered both the Autsim and cancer, or maybe made him more prone to both. I guess I will never really know. I hoped I have helped you out somewhat. Take care.

The two are definitely related in my daughter's case. Google NataliesTrekCIC and contact me if you want more info.
