How do you treat a lizard bite?

If you survive, clean the wound immediately and thoroughly.

The bacteria in most lizards mouths (and especially the Komodo) are dangerous.

If you have no sterile liquids available immediately use urine- in healthy people it is sterile! Piss on the wound to wash it. (Don't let the urine stand around in a container for many minutes.)

Seek professional medical attention as soon as possible.

Is it illegal to catch a lizard and keep it as a pet?

No, and there are many reasons for this:

1. Firstly, they are a protected species, so it would be illegal to keep one.

2. They are endangered, have a restricted habitat, and only live on a few islands in Indonesia.

3. They are the world's largest lizard and are extremely powerful. They have large claws and sharp teeth and it would take quite a few people to handle one. Komodo dragons do not usually attack people, preferring other game such as deer. But there are documented cases of them stalking and killing human beings.

4. Since they do feed on carrion (dead animals) their mouths are filled with toxic bacteria. Infections by these organisms would be a serious factor in treating a bite wound.

5. The main danger of a Komodo dragon's bite, however, is due not to bacteria that live on its teeth, but to venom. Recent research has discovered that the bite of the Komodo dragon delivers a powerful poison which actually thins the blood, increasing blood flow and creating a state of shock in the victim. The sharp, serrated teeth of a komodo dragon are used to open a gaping wound in its prey, enabling the venom to flow easily.

6. During mating season they become extra aggressive, and there is no cage that could keep one in during the mating season.

What is the ancestor of the Gila monster?

The Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) is a member of the family Helodermatidae, which diverged from other reptiles around 100 million years ago. Its ancestors are believed to be related to ancient lizards, specifically the group known as squamates. The lineage that led to Gila monsters adapted to a burrowing lifestyle, which is reflected in their morphology and behavior. Overall, their evolutionary history is tied to the broader diversification of lizards during the Cretaceous period.

Why are the komodo dragons dying?

Komodo dragons, though large and fearsome, face many dangers. One of the main reasons for their declining population is the fact that they live in areas constantly beset by natural disasters such as volcanic activity, earthquakes, floods and tsunamis. Natural disasters diminish numbers of the dragons' prey, leaving them with less food. Illegal poaching of Komodo dragons and their eggs has also resulted in fewer dragons remaining alive, while human encroachment leading to habitat destruction has resulted in less shelter for komodo dragons.

Well . . . some are viviparous. (Give birth to live young).

Are Tegu Lizards legal in Georgia?

To the best of my knowledge tegu are not illegal in ma. I personaly own a 4 ft. blue tegu and have researched it extensively. I haven't found anything outlawing them. You do however need a class 4 propagators permit for several other reptiles such as: all monitors, retics, anaconda, and a few other snakes. If approved for a permit by Masswildlife, its a 25 dollar fee per year. I suggest you go to MassWildlife web site and search for: 321 CMR 9:00 Exemption List. Tegu make great "pets", but as with any big reptile you better know what you're doing.
