Why did Malcolm X get assassinated?
Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little, also known as Detroit Red, El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, and Omowale, (Omaha, Nebraska, May 19, 1925 - February 21, 1965 in New York City) was a Muslim Minister and National Spokesman for the Nation of Islam. He was also founder of the Muslim Mosque, Inc. and the Organization of Afro-American Unity.
During his life, Malcolm went from being a young street-wise Boston hoodlum to becoming one of the most prominent black nationalist leaders in the United States, and when murdered, became considered by some as a martyr of Islam, and a champion of equality. As a militant leader, Malcolm X advocated black pride, economic self-reliance, and identity politics. He ultimately rose to become a world renowned African American/Pan-Africanist and human rights activist.
A year before his death Malcolm became an orthodox Sunni Muslim following a pilgrimage to Mecca. He was assassinated by members of the Nation of Islam in Washington Heights on the first day of National Brotherhood Week.
Assassination
On March 20, 1964, Life magazine published a famous photograph of Malcolm X holding an M1 Carbine and pulling back the curtains to peer out of a window. The photo was taken in connection with Malcolm's declaration that he would defend himself from the daily death threats which he and his family were receiving. Undercover FBI informants warned officials that Malcolm X had been marked for assassination. One officer undercover with the Nation of Islam is said to have reported that he had been ordered to help plant a bomb in Malcolm's car.
Tensions increased between Malcolm and the Nation of Islam. It was alleged that orders were given by leaders of the Nation of Islam to kill Malcolm; in The Autobiography of Malcolm X, he says that as early as 1963, a member of the Seventh Temple confessed to him having received orders from the Nation of Islam to kill him. The NOI sued to reclaim Malcolm's home in Queens, which they claimed to have paid for, and won. He appealed, and was angry at the thought that his family might soon have no place to live. Then, on the night of February 14, 1965, the house was firebombed. Malcolm and his family survived, and no one was charged in the crime.
A week later on February 21 in Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom, Malcolm had just begun delivering a speech when a disturbance broke out in the crowd of 400. A man yelled, "Get your hand outta my pocket! Don't be messin' with my pockets!" As Malcolm's bodyguards rushed forward to attend to the disturbance and Malcolm appealed for peace, a man rushed forward and shot Malcolm in the chest with a sawn-off shotgun. Two other men quickly charged towards the stage and fired handguns at Malcolm, who was shot 16 times. Angry onlookers in the crowd caught and beat the assassins as they attempted to flee the ballroom. The 39-year-old Malcolm was pronounced dead on arrival at New York's Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. He was killed by the shotgun blasts, the other bullets having been directed into his legs.
Although a police report once existed stating that two men were detained in connection with the shooting, that report disappeared, and the investigation was inconclusive. Two suspects were named by witnesses: Norman 3X Butler and Thomas 15X Johnson. However both were known as Nation of Islam agents and would have had difficulty entering the ballroom on that evening.
Three men were eventually charged in the case. Talmadge Hayer confessed to having fired shots into Malcolm's body, but he testified that Butler and Johnson were not present and were not involved in the shooting. All three were convicted.
A complete examination of the assassination and investigation is available in The Smoking Gun: The Malcolm X Files, a collection of primary sources relating to the assassination.

Is violence unjustifiable in any circumstances?
'Reading between the lines', I suspect the question may not have been carefully composed, and that the asker intended to ask "In what circumstance(s) is violence justifiable?"
Well, actually, violence is unjustifiable in practically all circumstances. As people, it seems culture and history offers us several kinds of action in the face of violence: attack, defend, escape or do nothing. As 'violence' is a wide ranging notion, one must consider what it is first, when one wants to bring about a catch-all answer.
Violence, in human interaction, is physical - from harming oneself, through person to person and on to world war. It can also be psychological, sexual, racial, religious, political and cultural (and I don't think the types end there!).
In larger-scale terms, dealing with violence tends to be classed as either 'pacifism', 'defence' and 'nonviolence'.
Nonviolence has been practised by Jesus Christ, Buddha, 'The Mahatma' Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Mario (Silo) Rodriguez amongst millions of others. The protesters in Burma, against the ruling military junta, are engaging in non-violence (late Sept. 2007).
I contend the only time violence is justifiable, is when one is cornered by another who is violent to you, and you have no escape nor assistance. And in such times, one must only do enough violence, if one has any choice, to create an opportunity to escape the immediate violence. From then on, to stop likely future violence, one must defend oneself and isolate, protest, shame and/or broadcast the wrong done.
Nonviolence was not really practiced by Jesus Christ. John 2:12 describes Jesus clearing the temple, which was a violent act performed out of His passion for His Father. Verse 17 states: His disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal for your house will consume me. And that it did.
Whether this justifies violence in any circumstance is hard to say. The heart and soul of Jesus is one with God, so He is therefore at one with His will as well. It would be at the very least a risk for someone to assume that God desires them to do violence againsed another person, but it could happen.

How did Malcolm X influence others?
Malcolm X had both a positive and a negative effect on society. Positively, he inspired many African-Americans to fight racism proactively. He offered an alternative to Martin Luther King's message of non-violence and pacifism. Many people think that Malcolm X promoted violence and this was not the case. More than anything, he was a proponent of self-defense. Negatively he has been portrayed as violent and racist. Since he did not preach non-violence, he was often seen as Martin Luther King's opposition; he was seen as a pro-violent person instead of a teacher of self-defense. To this day, he is portrayed as a hate-monger and has not enjoyed the popularity of many of his civil-rights contemporaries
One of the objectives of the Civil Rights Movement was to shed light on and address unfair discriminatory practices. Malcolm X (if nothing else) shed light on many deplorable conditions faced by people of African descent. When Malcolm X was featured in a year long television special with Mike Helen Mae Wallace in 1959 he most certainly shed light on unfair discriminatory practices. While it is not possible to accurately measure his impact, it is fair to say that he impacted the Civil Rights movement by helping to expose discriminatory practices which ultimately led to significant changes in what the legal system declared unlawful.
For example, a number of laws were put into place that had a significant impact on the lives and civil rights something of Black power people. For instance, from 1959-1965, sixteen states passed fair housing laws that prohibited racial, religious, and national origin discrimination in various sectors of the private housing market. In 1954 the US Supreme Court in Brown woods Washington v. Board of Education declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional, nullifying the earlier judicial doctrine of "separate but equal." In 1965 President Johnson signed the US Voting Rights Act of 1965. This act prohibited literacy tests and poll taxes which had been used to prevent blacks from voting.
In closing not only did Malcolm X impact the Civil Rights Movement by helping to implement laws, he also made America look at how existing laws were routinely ignored. For instance, in numerous speeches, Malcolm X reminded the nation that there were laws that prohibited lynching, raping and killing, yet as he pointed out such laws were routinely un-enforced such as was the 1955 murder of Emmett Till (14 years of age), along with his cousin Curtis Jones (17 years of age) and countless others.
