Manifest Destiny and Western Expansion

Manifest Destiny was the term used to describe the idea in the United States, beginning in the 1840s, that the US was destined to expand from ocean to ocean and all of North America from north to south. It developed, in part, from a great surge of nationalism (patriotism) following the War of 1812, as the nation expanded west. Because of our economic and political superiority, and due to the rapid growth of our population, and because it was God's will, our superior civilization should take over the others on the continent.

Americans believed that no other nation should be allowed to keep the United States from fulfilling its destiny. "Manifest Destiny"- (meaning obvious or undenniable fate)

The war against Mexico helped the U.S. achieve its manifest destiny by defeating Santa Anna's forces and capturing the Mexican capital of September 14th, bringing the war to an end.

Manifest destiny was a flawed theoretical justification for U.S. expansion an taking over of territory that was not theirs,

Greed and Arrogance lead to the rise of the spirit of manifest destiny in 1840. That spirit showed itself in the genocide and/or internment of virtually every native people living in North America.

The phrase "sea to shining sea" means the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Manifest Destiny was the idea, back in the early 1800's, that the United States should own and settle land all the way to the west pacific coast. The United States had already settled the Atlantic coast at that time.

Manifest Destiny caused the American people to expand the nation westward.

During the War of 1812, the emerging United States served notice to their former European masters that they had no rights to control colonies in the Western hemisphere. It then became manifest that their destiny was to rule "from sea to shining sea."

Given that belief, (although the term itself was not yet in use) the US attacked its neighbour, with the intent of forcibly annexing Canada. British troops. natives, and Canadian militia inflicted serious losses on the invasion forces, which retreated back across the border, surrendering Detroit, Buffalo, and Fort Dearborn (Chicago).

The British went on the offensive, taking Washington and burning the White House. However, at no time did they attempt to retake the United States. In fact, weary of war after defeating Napoleon, the British rather generously turned back all the American territory it had conquered and signed the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war.

Ironically, the American invasion, (the second since an American army attacked Canada in 1775), and that notion of Manifest Destiny, brought English and French speaking Canadians together, and began talk of nationhood, which began a reality in 1867, eventually making Canada the biggest country on the continent.

The Expansionists supposedly believed in Manifest Destiny. This was a publicity campaign, propaganda if you will, for people to travel and settle the largely vacant interior and west of the newly enlarged US.

It was positive (if you were part of the U.S.) because it helped the U.S. gain more land. It also caused the Mexicans to move more and more away from the United States

It was used by Democrats in the 1840s to justify the war with Mexico; the concept was denounced by Whigs, and fell into disuse after the mid 1850s.

It took place throughout the US.

Manifest Destiny: The belief that the US should keep expanding to the west.

The government of the United States sold at $1 per acre of land to encourage settlement in the new areas. This happened right after the Revolutionary War.
