What were Martin Luther's reasons for protesting the Catholic Church?

Martin Luther, a monk teaching at the University of Wittenberg in Saxony, said that he "hated this God who punished sinners", and turned to The Bible which he re-interpreted to say that man's salvation was not by acts of penance and repentance, but by faith alone.

His initial aim was to reform the use of indulgences, rather than to abolish them. At this time, Pope Leo X needed money to finalise the construction of St Peter's in Rome and planned to declare indulgences for all who contributed. Among those who replied to Luther's theses was Prierias, Master of the Papal Palace, who declared any challenge to the sale of indulgences heretical. Luther refused to retract and appealed to the Pope and to a General Council.

He also attacked the doctrine of transubstantiation, and the withholding of the Sacrament from the laity.

Why did Martin Luther eliminate the sacrament of Penance?

He didn't. He held to the Catholic teaching in this matter. But he did change it. Instead of the Catholic teaching that it consisted of three parts (Contrition, Confession/Absolution, and Satisfaction), he stated that it truly has only 2 parts (Contrition and Faith). Penance (Confession) is one of the three sacraments that Martin Luther acknowledged, along with Baptism and Holy Communion, in his new Church.

=It is hard to say whether or not Martin Luther King JR. was a pacifist. Some people feel that because he told other to always think before they act, and to use non-violent solutions, we should consider him a pacifist. However, we do not have any factually evidence telling use that he never in his how life used force. I personally think that Martin Luther King Jr. may not have been a pacifist, however i think that he was probably extremely close to being a pacifist. Pacifism is a very hard thing to keep to, as any act, or personal threat of violence on another, makes you no longer a pacifist. I hope this has helped everyone !!!=

How did Luther's ideas about interpreting the Bible differ from Catholics' ideas?

That's easy: the Catholic Church has always - for two thousand years, or fifteen hundred at that point - received Our Blessed Lord's teaching and she has never thought that she could change it, but has been tasked with preserving Our Blessed Lord's teaching intact. As part of her preaching, she wrote the books of the New Testament, decided which ones were inspired by God, and collected them, preserved them, and kept them inviolate.

Martin Luther, on the other hand, believed only in himself. He thought so much of his own opinion that he threw books out of the Bible - Old AND New Testament, and changed the wording in some passages to make them agree with what he thought they should be saying. Other reformers disagreed with him (to an extent) and put back the books in the New Testament, but not the ones in the Old Testament: they believed as well, that they knew better than 1,500 years of the Church, and Christ's guarantee to protect HIS Church until the end of the world.

We view women as equal to men, though in the past, some people failed to recognize this though the Church always proposed this. This is due to the culture that these people were in. What opened Luther's eyes to grace?

Unfortunately, nothing ever opened Martin Luther's eyes to the grace that was offered to him by God, which is unfortunate in the extreme as not only did he throw away his own salvation by refusing God's grace freely offered to him in Christ's Church, but he led millions of people and generations of people away from God's grace and salvation offered in His Church.

How did Martin Luther's feelings change towards the Catholic Church after he became a monk?

Martin Luther never became a monk, he joined the Augustinians, who are Friars. Of course we do not know his "feelings" other then what he has written, and others, who knew him, wrote. What we do know about him is that he had a extremely troubled youth, his father was overbearing and dictatorial, and that's Luther's view of his father affected his view of God. Most writers attribute his entering the Augustinians due to a vow that he made during a severe thunderstorm in which he feared for his life. He promised God that if he lived, he would enter the religious life. We do know that he entered the Augustinian Order and eventually taught in their Theologicate (Major Seminary) , although this is problematic as his knowledge of Theology and even St. Augustine and the Augustinian Order appears to be very poor. We can conclude that Luther's feelings didn't change all that much and that the insecurity that he felt in living up to his father's rule just got transferred to insecurity of living up to God's Fatherhood. This is the only reasonable explanation for his later defection and wild theories after fleeing the Order without seeking permission.
