Does Alcohol affect the brain centers not equally?
Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) affects many areas of the brain.
However, the most pronounced impact is found in the cerebrum, hippocampus, and cerebellum.
Ethanol affects the GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) neurotransmitter system, binding to GABA-A and GABA-B receptors, and increasing their ability to hyperpolarize neuronal cell membranes. So, it inhibits (slows, reduces) brain activity.
When this happens in the cerebral cortex, higher thought is slowed or inhibited.
In the hippocampus (where a large number of GABA receptors exist), memory storage is impaired.
In the cerebellum (also containing large numbers of GABA receptors to allow for fine-tuning of activities related to coordination), coordination is impaired.

Why can't you drink when taking antibiotics?
Most antibiotics do not adversely react with alcohol. This is actually an old wives tail dating back to WWII when penicillin was heavily used but in short supply. Soldiers were told that they couldn't drink on the antibiotics in an attempt to keep them sober so that they wouldn't become inebriated and have intercourse with prostitutes, thus catching venereal diseases that would require antibiotic therapy.
However, there are a few antibiotics that do have a true reaction with alcohol. For example, Metronidazole inhibits acetaldehyde dehydrogenase thus interfering with alcohol metabolism. These patients will have side effects if alcohol is consumed while the patient is taking the drug and thus, the patient should be instructed to abstain from alcohol use for the duration of the prescription.

Can i take buspirone 10 mg with tramadol hcl 50mg together?
Cjonb and I have spent the last two days researching this. The results are as follows:This mixture may cause seizures...What apparently happened was that this problem was not noted in clinical trials of the drug, but was later reported in the field after the drug was approved. And so the labels were changed.A little background is necessary:* Tramadol itself can cause seizures, especially if the patient is overdosing* Trycyclic antidepressants are pretty extreme, as they have some nasty side effects. They're not quite the drug of last resort, but they're getting there.* If someone on tricyclics and tramadol seizes, it's very hard to identify the exact process that caused the seizure -- maybe the tramadol; maybe the psyche med; whoknows?* The Cyclobenzaprine molecule, like quite a few other compounds, has three rings in attached to a central structure, as do tricyclics. This alone would usually not be enough to counterindicate -- but in this oddball case, it is, or should have been.* These two meds were often prescribed together, and even today, probably still are.* The seizure risk, while extant, is not extreme.* Taking any drug means you're accepting a desired effect, and a few undesired ones. It's pretty much never purely all benefit. Tramadol is like this.

Does drinking alcohol kill H1N1?
If by alcohol you are referring to rubbing alcohol, yes it can render the H1N1 virus inactive ("killed") IF used properly. That means washing a surface area (or your hands) with soap and water or other cleaning solution FIRST. Then briskly wipe down the area with the rubbing alcohol. Keep in mind alcohol works better on bacteria than viruses, and that you must wait until the alcohol has evaporated before an area can be considered "germ free". Also, the recommended waterless gel hand sanitizers contain about 60-65% alcohol. It is best to wash your hands FIRST, but if unable to, the hand sanitizers are effective, but be sure to use a good glob of it, really COAT your hands, paying attention to the tops as well as the nail beds, and not consider your hands "safe" until it has evaporated from the friction of rubbing your hands together briskly long enough for them to feel dry. Friction and the rubbing action are important to physically remove the virus, it is not simply a chemical action that works to remove or render the virus inactive.

Can you drink alcohol while on antibiotics?
While it is true that there is no adverse reaction, as stated below, the diuretic effect of the alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic by clearing it from the body too rapidly. Drinking with antibiotics is not recommended.
Dr. Alan Galbraith says:
"There is no reason whatsoever that alcohol cannot be drunk while on amoxycillin or for most antibiotics. I do not know where this urban myth came from but it is very widespread even amongst some of the medical profession. There is only one group of commonly used drugs which are antibiotics in the wider sense of this term that may cause unpleasant adverse effects when taken with alcohol. These are the imidazoles, of which metronidazole (Flagyl) is the commonest in use."
