I am now 43 and have always worn a traditional sanitary belt since I started my periods. I guess the main drawback is that they are a little more bulky than a modern pad so really should be worn with a skirt or dress only. When my daughter started her periods, I gave her the choice of pads or a belt and after some time with both she now mostly wears a belt, but I think most of her friends have probably not even seen a sanitary belt.
