How do you replace a timing chain from a Mercedes Benz 1981 380 sl?
If you have to ask how to replace a timing chain, I strongly suggest that you take your car to your local mechanic.
Why?
You don't know how involved it actually is.
First, you need to remove the right side valve cover, that will expose the timing chain. You have to remove the spark plugs. You will have to hand crank the motor until you locate the chain's clip. Then you need the proper tools to remove the clip, and all the while, not allowing the chain to slip a tooth. There's a bunch of other things you need to do as well...like replace the cam chain tensioner, there are also 4 chain guides that you will need to replace as well, which can be a pain in the ass. Did you know about the chain guides and tensioner?
This is the reason for taking your car to your mechanic. However, for a trained mechanic to do the job should take him less than 2 hours...and you would have to purchase the parts anyway...whether you did the repairs yourself or not. So actually, to have your mechanic install the chain should cost you about $150.00 on top of the parts. And, for this $150.00, you won't ruin your engine, and you'll save yourself about 8 hours and countless bloody fingers.
If you're still determined to do this job yourself....get the repair manual, and make sure you have all the parts before your start the job. You should also check the OHC oiling tubes...and replace the old valve cover gaskets on both sides.
It's been a while, but check the cam chain...it should be a double row chain...I think theyt started the double row chains in 1981. All 107 body SL's went to a double row chain...if yours is single row, which is doubtful....you will need to upgrade it immediately...that means replacing all of the chain's gears...3 I think..and that means you have to take the front of the engine apart....and that's a lot of work...TAKE THE CAR TO YOUR MECHANIC!!! Trust me on this one.
How do you fix 1967 250 sl plugs from fouling out?
The problem is probably in the head and is probably 1 or more valveguides. This requires a valve job. Symptom blue smoke. To prolong repair try using Kendall 15-40or 20-50 it doesnt burn so easily and use an injection system cleaner it will remove some of the deposit buildup.
How do you replace a headlamp on a 1998 Mercedes SL 500?
I don't know if your car is equipped with halogen or HID lights...in any event, the way you replace them are similar.
Pop the hood and go the back of the side that the light is out. You'll see a large, black plastic cover...pop the cover off and you should see the electrical connection.
You can slightly push in the housing and turn counter clockwise for a 1/4 turn and slide the bulb out. Whichever bulb you replace, make sure you do not touch the glass part of the bulb with your fingers. The oil from your hand can cause a hot spot on the glass bulb, and the intense heat these bulbs make can make them blow up. Use a clean cloth or tissue to handle the new bulbs. Re-insert the new bulb and put the plastic housing back on...you''re done.
Make sure you get the right size bulb for your purpose. It's also recommended that you replace both bulbs at the same time, since it's only a matter of time that the other bulb will go out.
HID bulbs can cost as much as $120.00 each...if you require HID's, you might want to check out some vendors on E-bay. I've seen those bulbs selling for 1/4 the price of OEM bulbs. Halogen bulbs should run about $15-20 each for a good quality bulb.
How to put top up on 91 500 sl when switch does not work?
There is a special tool you have to buy (it costs about £30). The instructions are in the owners manual but not very good.
Before you do any of that, check the hydralic fluid reservoir, it is under the spare wheel in the back. All I needed to do in the end was top it up and it was all OK. Money and time wasted on the tool.
Where is the fuse board on 1991 500 sl mercedez?
The fuse box on a SL500 is underneath the hood, next to the power brake booster and master cylinder. It's that big square black plastic box...just open it...it's all there. There are also some additional fuses in the trunk, underneath the trunk lid's right hinge...it's that little black square under the hinge.
As to manually lowering the top on an SL....this question was answered a few weeks ago...search for that posting.
I wouldn't think so. New part is to cheap, it is cheaper and safer to buy new. Total replacement, including installation should not cost you both sides $400
New is NOT cheap and rebuilt can be better than new. Depending on the year of your SL500 you may have either 11 or 12 hydraulic units which power your soft top. Top Hydraulics, Inc. in Oregon rebuilt all 11 of mine for $550. Klaus, the owner, claims his replacement seals will last longer than the original MB seals. His after the sale customer service is outstanding. Hope this helps.
Window relay location on a 1988 560sl?
I believe the relays are normally on the right side of the interior where the passengers legs go...there's a flat panel cover to access the fuse panel...behind that larger panel and above the fuse panel are where you'll find a bunch of relays. There are about a 1/2 dozen relays there. If you're replacing the relay...check the fuse panel first...then, check the window switch on the consol...they go bad a lot. That's easy to check....switch the two rocker switches and see if that helps. If both windows aren't working, you probably do need a new relay. If only the left or right window works,, chances are its a switch, fuse, or a motor.

How do you operate your 2003 clk Mercedes soft top?
The car must be at a stop, and the top protector must be latched in the trunk. The locking handle above the rear view mirror is released, and the red switch on the center console is operated to lower (or raise) the top.
The rear of the top will raise first, to allow the cover to lift, and then the top will fold down and stow.
Where do you add convertible top hydraulic fluid on a 1994 Mercedes Benz 500SL?
The fluid reservoir tank is located under spare tire. Does anyone know what type of fluid is used for convertible top on 1994 sl500.
I bought a 1992 300SL and the seats were so hard that I thought something was wrong. So I went to a showroom and sat in the seat of a 1998 500SL, same hard seats. To remedy the problem I had my upholstery specialist take my seats apart and replace the German horsehair/hard rubber fabric with modern foam rubber. The seats are much more comfortable now but not as comfortable as my Volvo. The Volvo also has cup holders, the Mercedes does not, which helps understand the hard seats.
