Of Course! In it's more mild forms Bipolar disorder is hardly even noticeable. Especially with treatment. Even the more severe Bipolar 1 Disorder is not so bad with treatment. I'm going to assume that you are asking this question partly based on the idea that Bipolar Disorder is genetic. The Nazi's and some other countries euthanized Bipolar people (prevented them from having kids via surgical methods). If you are more accepting than a Nazi you should have no problem with Bipolar people getting married to whomever they wish. It turns out that Bipolar disorder is only partially genetic. It is largely based on the environment that people live/grow up in. For example: There are two 100% genetically identical twins. One of them is diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. Statistics show that, even though they are 100% genetically identical, there is only about a 50% chance of the other twin being Bipolar. It is not just about genetics.

Drinking should be discussed before hand with the prescribing doctor. Depakote does make some people drowsy, and can cause some liver problems relatively quickly. It's best to discuss this before with the doctor.

You should not drink alcohol while taking Depakote, whether you have bipolar or not is not an issue. It's a matter of the medication, not the illness.

Personal Experience:

I take the 500mg depakote twice a day for epilepsy and know my limits. Depakote can easily make you drowsy and tired so whenever I decide to have alcohol I only have 1 or 2 light beers such as Bud Light, Coors Light, or Miller Light. Plus, I only drink once or twice a month. When I went to a dinner years ago a buddy decided to treat me to a beer. I decided to have a bottle of Heineken but pretty soon I started getting dizzy and tired.

Id say it's not a great idea. Prednisone upon withdrawal can lead to a higher level of salicylate in the blood which can cause salicylate toxicity in too high of concentrations. well, if you're like me then you really don't have a choice. I started having seizures in 2001 at the age of 15 and went through so many different medications. Of course Depakote was the only medication strong enough to "control" my seizures or decrease the number I was having daily and weekly anyways; however, Depakote is valporic acid which is hard for your liver to break down so that is why you have to have liver function tests done every so often. I have mine done every 3 months when I go to get my refills.

All i can speak from is personal experience...and all of my health care professionals have suggested NOT taking any other drug/substance that can increase the liklihood of becoming sleepy. For me it hightens the chance of seizure activity. I'd say if you can at all help it stay away from all night time drugs.
