It depends on the church the missionary comes from. You'll have to ask the missionary what their title is. Some missionaries are refered to as brother, sister, elder, pastor, etc. When in doubt, address male missionaries as 'brother so-and-so' and female missionaries 'sister so-and-so'.

Paul received the "Macedonian call" while on his second missionary journey. His first trip to Europe was in response to this call. There are a number of ways.

1. One can apply to a mission board that supports you from their own resources. Generally, there is a long process to go through to get such a position because one, in many ways, becomes an employee of that mission agency.

2. One may self-fund or be bivocational (working in the mission country) to fund. This is very workable for some, and completely inappropriate for others.

3. Commonly, missions is done in a manner often called "faith-based". While the term is completely a misnomer (nothing more "faith-like" in this method than any others). This involves building a support base with friends, families, and churches. Commonly, one would work with a faith-based mission agency to help with the logistical challenges and mobilization of ministry. They may help you connect with donors. However, commonly one must contact people, and churches. One must demonstrate one's vision, competence, and trustworthiness to convince them that you are called to missions, and deserving of being in partnership with them in missions.

Generally, one should start with those closest to you. They are more likely to know your passion, and recognize your competence and trustworthiness.

Adoniram Judson was a missionary in Burma. He did not go to China, but originally was destined to go to India.

Gladys Aylward saved up her small salary in order to be able to travel to China even though rejected as unsuitable due to a lack of education. She adopted a Chinese lifestyle and became a Chinese citizen. She also lead almost 100 Chinese children to safety, via a hazardous journey under appalling conditions, to escape the Japanese invaders in 1940. She later returned in 1955 and opened an orphanage which she continued to run until her death in 1970.

There probably are a few Christian missionaries, but the Syrian Civil War is hindering their access to the population and large swathes of Syria are under control of ISIL which imposes Shari'a Law and murders missionaries.

Unfortunately, Mormon missionaries are not allowed to date or even be alone with someone other than their assigned missionary companion. So if you are in love with a Mormon Missionary, you'll have to wait until his/her mission is over to do anything about it.

This depends on who the missionary is and where they are going.

Above all, the best gift you can give a missionary is your support. They will be provided for temporally, but mission life is hard. Knowing that you are supporting and praying for them means more than anything. Give them a nice card or letter expressing your heartfelt feelings, and be sure to send them regular letters or e-mails of encouragement while they are in the mission field.

If you feel the need to give them a physical gift, honestly, money is always the most appreciated gift for a missionary - they don't want to try to fit anything else into their suitcase, and a missionary's spending allowance is generally very small. They recieve barely enough money to cover basic food and general expenses, so if they end up needing something extra - like a new pair of shoes - they ofen have to write home and ask for extra money to pay for it.

Many like to give missionaries books. This is a great gift but unfortunately missionaries are not supposed to read anything that is not scripture or in the official 'missionary library'. Also, books are just extra weight to lug around as you move every couple months. So unless you are giving them enough time to read the book before they leave, it isn't a very practical gift.

Some like to give missionaries stationary sets. This may have been great years ago, but now most missions prefer that the missionaries communicate with home via e-mail to save on postage costs. If they are going stateside, stamps are still a nice gift, as they may still want to send letters or cards.

Clothing is a good option, especially if you know they don't have some items they need. Men can always use an extra tie, white shirt, or pair of dress socks. Fun extras like tie tacks and lapel pins might be nice as well. Women can also need extra socks, shirts, and skirts or a nice bag to carry their books and supplies in all day.

Simple inexpensive religious jewelry is also a good option. It's small and lightweight and it can be nice to have little options when you feel like you are wearing the same thing every day.
