A model of a house was built to a scale of 4 inches to 28 feet The height of the actual house is 42 feet What is the height of the model in inches?

This is simple really .. set the problem up as:

4 as x

-- --

28 42

then cross-multiply:

4 x 42 = 28x

168 = 28x

then divide both sides by 28 :

x = 6

6 inches.

For a simple problem like this though you could do it in your head. If 4 in equals 28 ft .. then 1 in equals 7 ft. Divide that 42 by 7 to get 6.
