In the early phases of the Industrial Revolution, machinery was often large, crude, and dangerous. Child labor was also quite common, and employed at usurious wages to perform difficult and dangerous tasks. One of the tasks bestowed upon these children (predominantly males) was that of climbing along the beams, catwalks, and difficult to reach portions of factory-sized machines. Their purpose was to perform minor repairs and to grease the gears. Their scampering about the machines resembled the behavior of monkeys climbing about. Their primary purpose was to grease the machines; hence, they were commonly called grease monkeys. They were readily identified by the grease streaked and soaked clothing they wore. So when anyone wearing grease streaked and soaked clothing, it was presumed that they worked as a grease monkey. It was a derogatory and denigrating term.

When automobiles made their appearance on the industrial scene, the term was already well entrenched in American society. Those who did the mechanical repairs, greased the autmobiles, and wore the evidence of their labors on their clothing were also called grease monkeys.

The most important difference is the oppositional ability of human thumb. This is the prime reason why we are able to perfectly grip things in our hands without slipping and have better control over our hands.

I really admire you and don't hear this often at all. While your heart is in the right place and your mother is probably working very hard sometimes the human species needs to feel needed. Being out in the workforce is a good thing and your mother may enjoy the camaraderie with her coworkers. People need to feel needed. Some women just don't want to stay home especially when their children are grown and out on their own or are self-sufficient. The best thing you can do is sit down and discuss this with your mother, but if she wants to keep her job then try to understand she needs it and jobs aren't always about money. Working also helps a person get over personal problems in their lives and if your mom is divorced she has a better chance of dating while working than sitting around at home. Women were meant to be more than just house cleaners and cooks, they are intelligent and your mother may be enjoying all of this in her work. Have that talk with her and if she doesn't want to quit work then respect her wishes and contribute what you want.
