In older times, a city required a certain population (20 000?) OR the possession of a Cathedral. The Christchurch Cathedral was started (I think) in 1879.

What is the name of new zealand's largest hydroelectric dam?

hundreds!About 30 are medium size HEP dams ,eg the Waikato River in the North Island has 9.10 if you include the old one that is now flooded near Arapuni. There are many small earth dams on farms used to make small lakes or ponds. Most of the large dams are made of concrete -especially in the north Island due to earthquakes. In the South IS there are some very large earth dams. Before the RMA it was a simple matter to make a dam on your own land but not any more!

How many New Zealanders have maori heritage?

Full-blooded is a meaningless term in Maori society. There is only Maori or Pakeha (non-Maori). Maori is not just an ethnicity but a living culture. Terms such as 'full-blooded' are best suited to discussing animals not people; they are a dehumanising throwback to European colonialism.
Note: The term 'Pakeha' is a New Zealand cultural term which simply means non-Maori. 'Pakeha' has no negative connotations whatsoever. Anyone claiming that 'Pakeha' is somehow derogatory is perpetuating an anti-Maori myth that has no basis in fact.

Which continent is new zealand found in?

New Zealand is in the Australian and Pacific region.

New Zealand is a group of islands lying about 2000 km SE from Australia.

New Zealand lies on a mostly submerged continent nowadays called Zealandia.

It is separated from Australia and the Australian Plate by the Tasman Sea.

Why is New Zealand not able to hold the Olympic GamesIf they can why don't theyIs it every going to be held in New Zealand?

Whilst this is not a definitive answer, I doubt New Zealand has the capacity or the Infrastructure, let alone the facilities to cope with the event and its influx of people. Soon New Zealand will host the Rugby World Cup, and upgrading stadiums etc to cope with this has, and continues to be, problematic. New Zealand is not big enough to host the Olympics. We dont want it here anyway. We only have 4 million people here and more than that would come to watch. New Zealand can't host the Olympic Games because it is way to small, and there isn't enough accomodation or facilities for all the athletes. Also if too many people came to New Zealand, everyone would see how beautiful it is and we would become overpopulated and we don't want that =]

Why do kiwi birds only live in New Zealand?

Kiwis are endemic to New Zealand, and are one of several Ratites which are old Gondwana birds which lack a keel bone to which the flight muscles would be attached. There are several species in the country, but ll are endangered by dogs and introduced mammalian predators such as stoats, cats etc.

Other ratites are associated with other lands of Gondwana.

Where are Zippo lighters sold in New Zealand?

Everywhere from convenience stores to online. Zippos aren't as elusive as you think, although the largest retail range is from the specialist shop, the Free Spirit Zippo Gallery, in Christchurch run by an avid collector who is officially recognised by Zippo to do one-of-a-kind pieces.

New Zealand is a mostly mountainous country because it?

The plates are constantly shifting and grinding into each other/ It's on a huge fault line with a lot of volcano's and earthquakes.

add. Some of the movement between the two plates (Australian and Pacific) is taken up by dextral movement, and some by subduction. The highest parts of the Southern Alps have been uplifted by about 20 000 m, and erosion has reduced that to about 4 000 m.

Some of the current inter-plate thrust is taken up in the Otago region (my region) by slow mountain building, largely without earthquakes. In the last 150 years, the distance between Queenstown and Dunedin - 150 km has shrunk by about 1500 mm. My home town of Wanaka is moving SW at about 40 mm per year, and 30km away, the land on the other side of the Alpine Fault is moving N at about 10 mm per year. Mostly without earthquakes - just some plastic mountain building and fault sliding.

But a BIG earthquake is certain in the long run.

Why doesnt New Zealand have a queen or a king?

New Zealand and Australia are very similar in the ways that they are both English speaking countries, housing and living are very much the same, they were both founded by the british, the main religions are the same. Also if you are a New Zealand citizen you are able to live in Australia and work in Australia without any working visa or citizenship, and vice versa.
