How to replace the knock sensor in a 2000 Nissan Xterra?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I believe the knock sensor is under the intake manifold requiring it's removal. I have not been able to verify this yet.

If that's the case, be prepared to get giggy with this engine. It's not an easy, logical design, so you might want to take care of some things while you're in deep. For example, the manual calls for the timimg belt to be replaced at 120,000 miles (if memory serves) so you may as well tackle that also.

Xterra Haynes manuals are few and far between. I strongly suggest acquiring either the Haynes or a FSM before getting giggy with this engine.

Eureka! We sucessfully did it another way and saved about $500. (est. from a mechanic to replace with me buying the part.) Go through the front of the engine. We were replacing the time belt etc. anyway.... I have photos showing the 'impossible' too.

We were told that the knock sensor wasnt that big a deal that the truck would still be ok if that was not changed. What we did change was the crankshaft position sensor that was bad. But we are still having the same problem as before when the engine gets hot it wants to cuts out. Would the knock cause that sort of problem?

What does 'ATP'mean on the DASHBOARD OF THE Nissan XE 2002 vehicles?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, the ATP light comes on when the transfer case is in Neutral and the transmission is in Park. It's there to alert the driver that putting the transmission in Park will not prevent the vehicle from rolling since the axles are disconnected from the transmission's park pawl.

If the transfer case is not actually in Neutral, then it's just a sensor glitch.

This light indicates that the automatic transmission parking function is not engaged. If the transfer control lever is not secured in any drive position while the automatic transmission selector lever is in the P (Park) position, the transmission will disengage and the vehicle may move unexpectedly. Shift the transfer control lever into the 2H, 4H, or 4L position when the warning light comes on.

How do you winterize a travel trailer?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

One step would be to drain all water lines and tanks.

Add about 2 cups of 50/50 solution of automotive anti-freeze to all sink traps. Don't forget the bathroom sink and shower, too!!

If you are in heavy snow country, you may want to put a 4x4 post between the inside roof and the floor to help support the roof framework.

Get canvas covers for the A/C units and disconnect/remove the batteries if they are outside on the tongue. Chock the wheels if on even the slightest incline to prevent the unit from sliding on ice.

DON'T FOLLOW THE ADVICE ABOVE. Automotive anti-freeze is extremely toxic. There is an RV anti-freeze that made specially for this purpose. It is not toxic and completely safe.

How do you reprogram your key fob?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Answer

take it to the dealer

On a ford truck turn the ignition on and off 8 times leaving it on the 8th time. When the locks cycle one time, push the lock button on the new fob. Do this with the door open!

I just tried this on my 1998 e320 Benz after one key died during a battery change and it has just saved me $462, yes that's the quote from the Benz Dealer for a replacement key.

The oil pressure light flickers on for a few seconds while steady driving on my 1995 Taurus 3.0 liter is it a pump or oil presure sensor?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Back in the old days, cars used an oil pressure gauge - and then along came what are sometimes referred to as "idiot lights" that took their place.

The very same function is being performed: letting the driver know if the oil pressure, therefore the oil levels are getting low.

The flickering light lets you know the oil level is right at the point of being able to trigger the light on the dash.

Also, when the engine is just idling, the pressure is lower and light goes on. When the car is moving though, the engine is turning over faster and the pressure builds up and the light goes off.

The #1 cause of engine failure is engine oil neglect - running oil too long between changes (if any at all!), and running with not enough oil.

The Owners Manual will have all the details and even illustrations on how to take care of your car's oil.
Low oil level. Add oil. Oil pump defective, oil sending unit defective, low oil, bad guage.
1. Defective switch 2. Short in wiring 3. Worn oil pump 4. Worn bearings Hook a direct reading guage to the place where the switch screws in to see what the actual pressure is. If the pressure is good, look for electrical trouble.

Does your 2001 Nissan Xterra have a cabin air filter?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. It is located behind the glovebox. There are two filter cartridges, one on top of the other in the middle of a large black box.

Some models DO NOT have filters installed from the factory; HOWEVER, the directions that come with the filters explains how to cut an opening in the side of the "big black box" where the filters are to be installed. It's pre outlined in the plastic. Cut them out with a utility knife and slip the new filters into place.

How do you replace the starter on a 2001 Nissan Xterra?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It's under the drivers side just above the transmission. I can get to mine from the front of the vehicle, see it when I am changing the oil. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, jack up the vehicle, if you don't fit underneath it, and then start undoing bolts.

There's two wire connections, one from the battery, one from the solenoid and then there are two mounting bolts, there location depends on engine size.

Reverse above for installation, finally re-connecting the negative cable.
