Why are average temperatures lower near the poles?
Average temperatures are lower near the poles because sunlight is spread over a larger area, resulting in less heat per unit of surface area. Additionally, the angle at which sunlight strikes the Earth's surface near the poles is less direct, leading to less efficient heating. Lastly, polar regions are often covered in snow and ice which reflect sunlight, further reducing the amount of heat absorbed.

Provided the Earth continued at the same speed in its orbit round the Sun, it should not matter which way up the poles where. Time is only for our convenience, to help us organise our lives. Which ever pole ice melted, the sea level would still rise.
Why is Yakutsk colder than Tromso despite being further south?
Yakutsk is colder than Tromsø primarily due to its continental climate, characterized by severe winters and minimal maritime influence. Located deep within the Siberian landmass, Yakutsk experiences extreme temperature variations, with cold air masses dominating in winter. In contrast, Tromsø, situated above the Arctic Circle but near the coast of Norway, benefits from the warming effects of the North Atlantic Current, resulting in milder winter temperatures. This combination of geographical factors leads to Yakutsk's colder climate despite its more southerly latitude.
Researchers in the 16th century itself has predicted the existence of the North Pole. Several explorers tried to reach the North Pole in the 18th century. In 1827, a British naval officer named William Edward Parry tried, but was forced to turn back.Later in 1871, an expedition led by American Charles Hall had also failed. In 1895 Norwegian explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen got to 86 degrees 14' North prior to being forced back. The Italian whaler Stella Polare got to 86 degrees and 34'. In the first part of 19th century a man by name Frederick Cook who was an American declared that he reached the pole on April 21, 1908. But his expedition was not recognized due to lack of sufficient evidence. Later an American naval engineer Robert Peary claimed he reached the North Pole on April 6, 1909. His expedition is still under dispute. One of the objections was that none of Peary's men were trained for navigation. His expedition is also said to be 3 times faster than any other expeditions to the pole.
