Why is there a decrease demand for nurses?

I'm Canadian and even in the U.S. our governments would have us believe that there aren't enough men/women going into nursing, but it's not true. In Canada it came to light that many nurses are just sitting at home and why ... because they want to have nurses work part-time and they simply don't get the hours in they use too. Also they often get the lesser jobs because the Head Nurses get the choice jobs with the most pay. I talked to nurses about this. Then there is the Union to contend with. Canadians citizens want nurses to come into Canada from anywhere in the world but because of the Union there is a stipulation that nurses have to take at least another years course in Canada and the exams to prove they can operate on the same level as our Canadian nurses. Some of the nurses (especially American and British) are great nurses and need no extra training. It's a bunch of mumbo jumbo by our government and if they spit out the truth they just don't want to be bothered to put the money into the education of nurses and hiring nurses. Training to be a nurse is extremely expensive with little governmental help so young women that had once wanted to go into nursing are either going into other areas of the medical field or other careers.

Are there more male nurses them female nurses?

The answer to this question totally depends on the patient. Some male patients feel strongly about having a male do their intimate care while other men feel just as strongly about having a female nurse do their intimate care.

In my experience, it doesn't seem to make a difference to a majority of patients or at least they don't bring up the subject.

I will say that there does seem to be a slightly growing percentage of male patients that will comment to me that they are glad they have a male nurse and it usually seems to be due to the anxiety that the male patient would feel if they got an erection during a procedure with a female nurse or because they have a modesty issue.

If anything, I have come to learn that everyone has baggage / hangups to one extent or another and treating everyone with dignity and respect seems to transcend gender lines and make gender less of an issue.

What kind of environment does a labor and delievery nurse have?

Work environment. Most RNs work in well-lit, comfortable healthcare facilities. Home health and public health nurses travel to patients' homes, schools, community centers, and other sites. RNs may spend considerable time walking, bending, stretching, and standing. Patients in hospitals and nursing care facilities require 24-hour care; consequently, nurses in these institutions may work nights, weekends, and holidays. RNs also may be on call-available to work on short notice. Nurses who work in offices, schools, and other settings that do not provide 24-hour care are more likely to work regular business hours. About 20 percent of RNs worked part time in 2008.

RNs may be in close contact with individuals who have infectious diseases and with toxic, harmful, or potentially hazardous compounds, solutions, and medications. RNs must observe rigid, standardized guidelines to guard against disease and other dangers, such as those posed by radiation, accidental needle sticks, chemicals used to sterilize instruments, and anesthetics. In addition, they are vulnerable to back injury when moving patients.
