MDs get 11 years of training to do this and Rns get about 2 years to learn most of the same things. So you have to be really good at critical thinking about biological systems. We organize the care of the patient from many differnet departments during the day. And most importantly we care for the overall well being of the patient dealing with his fears and lack of knowledge about the medical processes being performed. You have to study all aspects of medical disease processes in order to teach the patient about them. The doctor may say it once but in order to learn it a patient must be told more than once because of the complexity of the body.
If you miss anything important and the patient is harmed then it is your responsiblity and you are liable for your actions. Saying the Doctor ordered me to do this is will not absolve you of the responsibilty. We get paid a lot of money because we save peoples lives with our decisions everyday.
