Oil and Oil Filters

Almost all hydraulic machines and internal combustion engines use oil to lubricate their parts allowing them to handle enormous pressures. Oil is then recycled in an oil filter, which removes any particulates before injecting it back into the system.

What happens when a diesel runs low on oil?

Same as any internal combustion engine - it overheats and wears out.

Oil provides many protections to an engine. While it can cause over-heating, there are many other things that happen. If your diesel engine uses Huey style injection it uses oil pressure and viscosity as a reference for injection pressure. If your oil pressure or quality is low less fuel is injected into the cylinder for each combustion event. It's a good indicator that you need to check your oil, but it's mostly inconvenient. Oil, when pressurized inside your engine provides a cushion between the crank journals and the main bearings (block), Rod bearings and crank, cam and block, lifters and block, lifters and cam, valve and guide, the list goes on. If your engine runs low enough on oil to prevent the oil pump pick-up from drawing oil from the pan something is going to miss out on lubrication. Depending on what style engine you have (priority main-oiling or no) the damage can get severe very quickly. If you had it a quart low I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just top it off. If your stick was dry the last time you checked it you might be in trouble.

How often should you change the oil in a Chevy Impala?

Change it every 3500 miles if it is a pre 1995 vehicle. If it is a post 1995 Impala change it every 5,000 miles. It will say in your owner's manual. If you don't have one, you can go to a parts store and find a maintenance schedule on the first few pages of the Haynes manual for that vehicle.

How detect gas kick in oil well?

A gas kick will cause the annular surface pressure to increase due to the reduced hydrostatic head in the annulus caused by the inflowing gas having a lower density than the displaced drilling mud. Another way to detect a kick is by an increase in mud tank volume. Formation fluids flowing into the wellbore will increase the annular flow rate while the drill pipe flow rate remains the same. This will cause a build-up of mud in the mud storage tanks.

Additional information

Your VW diesel requires an oil meeting the VW 507 spec. The requirements for a diesel engine differ from a gasoline engine. Mobil One ESP, The Amsoil AFL mentioned above and very few others. Read the back of the bottle and look for the VW 507 rating. You can ask your local dealer what they recommend. Most dealers use Mobil One ESP as bulk for diesels.

Is there any repair method for a cracked engine oil pan drain plug hole?

Remove the oil pan and clean thoroughly then bring the pan to a muffler shop or body shop and have them weld the crack...the threaded hole for drain plug may need to be chased with a tap after welding. Then again you could track down a used pan pretty cheap.

What would cause engine oil to turn thick like a jello mold?

This can happen on a high compression engine (especially diesel) when the oil is not changed often enough. The fuel blow-by from the rings causes fuel to mix with the oil and "coke up" , creating oil that looks almost like asphalt.

What is an oil catch can?

An oil catch can is used in turbo applications, or high-performance race applications where excessive blow-by (leakage past the piston rings) of air and fuel vapor occurs. This creates a positive pressure in the crankcase. Engine manufactures have placed a valve on the engine block which releases this pressure. This valve is known as a PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve. During engine operation, blow-by gases, as well as oil mist from the rotating components of the engine, pass through the PCV valve and are routed back into the intake for the engine to burn off. However, some of the oil mist and other products settle along the engine intake and over time form a "gunk." The oil catch can collects the oil mist and condenses the fuel vapors while allowing "cleaner" gases to be passed back into the intake. Typically the blow-by gasses are passed through a wire mesh, which give the vapor droplets something to adhere to. Since the oil catch cans condense the vapor portion of the gasses, they will need to be drained periodically of all the oil, fuel and other contaminants.

Engine oil emulsified - Mercedes v6 petrol?

Engine oil can become emulsified (milky white color) from a build-up of water in the crankcase. Normally it is condensation resulting from or caused by short trips in cold weather. The engine isn't allowed to reach operating temperature and the moisture is not driven off by the heat. Other causes can be a coolant leak, but antifreeze ususally turns the oil jet black.

If you don't get out on the highway frequently, then make it a point to do so once a week. If it has been too long since you changed the oil then do so. Water and combustion by-products not only weaken the lubricity of the oil and lead to higher engine wear, but water increases the acidity of the oil and eats away at metal surfaces.

What weight oil does a 1994 Toyota Camry take?

Newer cars recommend 5w-30. However, as your car gets older it may need some help sealing the rings by using 10w-40. It really depends on the time of year you are changing the oil and the mileage the car has on it. In the summer, going through the desert I run 20w-50 in my '95 Camry.

Antifreeze and Engine Coolant
Radiators

What would cause oil to leak into the antifreeze reservoir?

Consider if it is engine oil or transmission oil or power steering oil. Transmission oil or power steering oil would indicate a bad radiator. Engine oil could be a bad radiator also if the radiator includes an engine oil cooler ("extra cooling") but usually indicates an intake or head gasket leaking.

Answer

Your symptoms are indicating a possible head gasket problem. If you have oil in the water, you may have water in the oil. Pull out the dipstick or take off the oil fill cap and look for the unusual condition of FOAMY oil. You may also have exhaust gas in the water which can also be checked by a mechanic. Be prepared for the expense of a head gasket or possible engine replacement.

answer

if you have oil in coolant, you have a cracked head or a cracked block your mechanic will do a compression test to determine what it is either way it is not cheap fix unless you can do it yourself

ANSWER

you may have a blown head gasket, or cracked head , or cracked block

Answer

It could be a number of things listed above. However I had this issue with my 3.1 V6 GM engine. I had oil in the coolant, and it turned out to be a failed Intake Manifold Gasket. It is best to take it to a repair shop and let a professional handle it unless you are mechanically inclined. If it is an Intake Manifold Gasket your looking at a ball park figure between 400 to 900 dollars. Think of it this way, would it be more beneficial to fix your current car? Or to go and put a down payment on a new one and get stuck with payments for the next 5 years?

its a BLOWN HEAD GASKET, OR A CRACKED HEAD or CRACKED BLOCK one of the three.....

It seems everyone assumes that you are talking about a gasoline engine which for the most part they would be right: radiator oil/trans-fluid internal cooler, intake leak or head gasket. If you are talking about a diesel engine, could also be oil cooler o-rings, cylinder liner o-rings, failed e.g.r. cooler, etc.

i think its funny that i have that same problem with my 3.1 v6 gm motor and my friends grandmom had the same problem lol and there is oil in my reservoir alott and if u want to know if u bad head gaskets u wont be able to see people behind u because ull be pouring white smoke out of ur exhaust, and whoever said water is heavier then oil is retarted its less dense then water yes but not heavier its hard to tell what the exact problem is so first things first id do the intake manifold gasket one because the part is cheap and to its not exactly ripping ur motor apart

yes lets tell this person to fix there exhaust manifold because that takes care of his oil & water problem. the person that feels not pulling an engine apart, how do u fix a a hungry stomach. now this person has oil in the water not an exhaut minifold problem geeezzzz some people.....
