Its Little Arliss because without him insisting over and over to keep the dog and bringing it home in the first place, Travis wouldn't have had to have such a heartache by having to shoot his dog because of rabies. Without Arliss's constant complaining and getting into trouble, travis wouldn't have bonded with the dog as much as he did and there would be no internal or external conflicts.

Songstress Ronnie Spector has NO connection whatsoever with the novel- as you stated (Old Yeller) term refers to a Dog, and his color scheme, not habit of excessive barking as I thought. the novel is not remotely about Bull Fighting. It does deal with an animal sacrifice, though, the Lead adult character ( Father or Uncle) shoots Old Yeller after the animal becomes rabid following, I believe, a snake bite. The sudden-death killing off of a Lead animal character is probably unique in Disney films and it was not liked by all.

It made it so outstanding because lots of details and its a heartwarming story. It is really sad and made me read a lot of it. It really caught my attention and most people know this story. Its an peaceful ending how unusually it ended. I'll give 5 stars out of 5 to this book.

They are about the same. the animal sacrifice theme ( lead male character is led to shoot the title character as he has become rabid. Maybe the movie was in a more modern setting. Not having seen it, I do not attempt to, well review books I have not read. I don"t like it. The animal sacrifice theme is quite common in some animal tales, but obviously doesen"t work with continuing characters such as Lassie or Gentle Ben, to name but two, Lassie did pour on the Lachrymotor overdrive, though.

One normally (consider rerun potential, like cartoons) Kill off a lead character. It was a novel by a man named Gibson. The animal-sacrifice idea may have been borrowed from the ( Ice Pan incident) by the explorer Sir Wilfrid Grenfell, which actually happened and the explorer was compelled to shoot three sled dogs to make a makeshift banner to alert authorities- for his own survival, This is heavy stuff, but for Sir Wilfrid was true. That was written in l909. Old Yeller might be a western adaptation to some extent.

The Dog ( Old Yeller, from his color scheme, not barking habits!) is deliberately shot as he has become rabid from a bite from a snake ( in some versions it is a wolf) anyhow the dog is shot dead- no possibly (grey) ending of the dog merely, say wondering off in a sort of MIA limbo- the animal is also shot deliberately by the Father figure- or Uncle, in the story. Automatically, this destroys any possibility of continuity ( such as the lengthy Lassie series). I am aware of some other animal tales(about pets, not wild animals, who get into fatal fights all the time) but this one stands out. in the Rambunctious Doberman, the title dog is accidentally killed by an automobile backing out of a driveway, as I recall ( radio drama, not TV) The Ice Pan deals with animal sacrifice by an explorer lost in the arctic ice- he uses the dead dogs to construct a sort of danger flag or banner/ That took place around l908 and was based on an incident in the life of Grenfell, an explorer-doctor. How the dogs were dispatched is not disclosed to the audience. ( I heard two radio dramas based on this incident- my guess he shot them. so it goes support the A.S.P.C.A. no need for this sort of thing.

Old Yeller is a canine tragedy novel. It is basically about a dog- the name belongs to the dog and is sort of Southern Dialect for Yellow- not someone who makes a lot of noise- as many think- I always thought Old Yeller implied - something like Loudmouth or Hollering Henry! The story takes place in the Horse age West= and has no connection anyhow with Science Fiction.

The last name is Coates. Travis, Jim, Codi, Arliss played in the movie with the same last name.

= Character Sketch (Old Yeller) = Travis - Travis is the man of the family and has to take care of Little Arliss and mama, he is 14 years old. He is also a responsible young man, and is very respectful to the people around him. Little Arliss - Little Arliss is Travis's little brother, he is 5 years old and is very stubborn. If he gets mad at people he tends to throw rocks at them, he is also very outgoing and tells a lot of fibs. Mr. Coates - Travis's, and Little Arliss's father and also mama's husband who left. He left for a cattle drive and said he wasn't going to be back for a couple months so he left Travis in charge. Old Yeller - A dog that the Coates family found stealing a piece of bacon and they decided to keep him. Travis hated him but then got to like him some more. Little Arliss and mama adored him. Old Yeller is a very strong and loyal dog. Jumper - The Coates family's donkey. He is very stubborn when it comes to things he doesn't want to do, but momma puts him straight. He helped carry the injured Old Yeller back to the house. Bell - Travis's old dog who he loved very much. He was very obedient and knew what to not get himself into. Though he sniffed a dead rattlesnake head, got bitten, and died. Bud Searcy - He is the Coates family's neighbor who isn't very neighborly all he does is talk and spit tobacco, not very well mannered like his daughter. Spot - The Coates family's cow that produces a lot of milk but was afraid of Travis and didn't let him milk her. She hid from Travis, but Travis found her and milked her by having Old Yeller to put the cow straight. Lisbeth Searcy - Bud Searcy's daughter, not very much like him. She is very nice and would never harm a fly; she also has a dog named Miss Prissy. She is very good with working on a farm. Burn Sanderson- Old Yellers original owner, he is very nice and shows fair manners. He decided to let Travis and the rest of the family keep Old Yeller if they would cook him up a nice meal and then he would be on his way. Missy Prissy- Lisebeth's little dog who is always sweet and playful, not a good farm dog. She had puppies that looked like they couldn't even stand up, just look cute. Mama- Mama is a very calm and kind woman. She always makes sure that her boys are in tip top shape for the day ahead of them. She is very cautious about what the boys get into, like when Travis got attacked by the hogs she didn't want him to go back and get Old Yeller with her.
