Asked by Wiki User

Probably before your time if your in your early 20's. FloJo was a world-class sprinter who was very good for a number of years but wasn't breaking any records. After about a 2-yr layoff from 85-87 she returned and was 2nd at the world championships in the 200m. However, in 1988 she set the world of track on fire. She showed up at the olympic trials and set a wr that stands to this day of 10.49 in the 100m and then went to the Olympics where she won double gold in the 100m and 200m setting the wr in the 200m of 21.34 that stands today. FloJo was known for her glamorous outfits, six-inch nails, and her beauty. She was dodged by steroid rumors that were never proven. She suffocated on her pillow in 1998 due to a brain defect that caused her to seizure. As others pointed out, steroids were never proven or disproven.

Differentiate the Track and Field?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Track events are generally running events, normally run in the form of a race, with a start line and a finish line, meaning there is a prescribed distance of the event. Everybody in the event generally starts at the same time and the first one across the finish line is the winner.

I put the word generally in these sentences because there are occasional exceptions when someone invents an event, like handicap races, that deviates from the norm.

Track races would occur on a track, a flat measured surface that is designed for the best consistency for all contestants to have an equal chance. When you see a track race with a staggered start, each of those start lines is carefully measured so it is exactly the same distance from start line to finish line for each participant if they stay in their lane. The further the distance from the center of a circle, the longer the circumference. Most tracks are 400 meters outdoors or 200 meters indoors, though there are many exceptions. The one consistency is that every effort is made so that the competitors have as equal circumstances as possible, so the competition is based on the athletic ability. Most modern tracks, where top level competition takes place are called All Weather tracks, which means they have a rubberized surface, good for traction, with a consistent amount of bounce, which will not absorb water (rain).

A field event is where each athlete competes in their event by themselves, one at a time on the same competition area. These would generally be jumps and throws. In a throwing event, most throw from some form of circle (even the javelin has a circular throwing line at the end of its runway). The throw must be made from inside the circle (if the athlete steps out of the circle, the throw is a foul and is not counted) and is measured to the closest point the implement lands to the circle. Long jump and triple jumps function the same way, with the jump measured from a board on the runway to the closest mark their body leaves after landing in a sand pit. Vertical jumps, the High Jump and Pole Vault are slightly different, the bar progresses up at regular intervals. The athletes can choose which height they wish to attempt. Each miss is counted against them to break the frequent ties, but they can keep attempting new heights until they miss three times in a row.

All of these events, track races of various distances (including relays and hurdle races) and field events happen at the same event, known in the United States as a track and field meet. Its another case of the USA obstinately doing its own thing, like measuring in feet and inches or Fahrenheit. The rest of the world knows the same sport as Athletics. The sports governing body, the IAAF (the International Association of Athletics Federations, formerly known as theInternational Amateur Athletics Federation) uses Athletics in its title to describe the sport. Also under that umbrella are road racing (which includes marathons), cross country racing (XC, where the varying course conditions are part of the event), mountain ultra trail running (MUT, difficult courses over extremely long distances) and race walking (RW, the athlete must remain in contact with the ground with knees straightened until they pass under the athlete). That group of sports is also referred to as Athletics. Back in the USA, the national governing body is still trying to find a way to put a blanket over that same group of sports. In 1979, the government broke up the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) to allow the path for professional athletes in the sport. The new body became known as The Athletics Congress, TAC. After a decade of confusion, in 1992 they changed their name to United States Track and Field, USATF, which has subsequently offended the road runners and other participants in the other related sports by making them feel left out.

What is the best brand of soccer cleats?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are a number of reasons for having kids wear soccer cleats. Shoes (or boots, if you're from the other side of the pond), with their integrated cleats, provide traction for accelerating and maneuvering on the field. Anyone who is running and changing speed and/or direction as constantly as a soccer player will benefit enormously from the advantage afforded by cleats. And if a kid is going to keep playing as he turns into an older kid, a highschool kid, a college kid and/or a professional soccer player, he's gonna be wearing these at every game. Might as well get used to them. Though the shoes can be a bit uncomfortable at times, especially in the beginning, a reasonably good pair will provide adequate support and become fairly easy to wear. There are some safety issues regarding the cleats. Players (and officials, but that's another story) can get hung up a bit because of them, and then they twist something or trip and fall. Ouch! But players who are wearing shoes without the cleats can slip and fall big time when trying to play the game without the traction benefits of soccer shoes. (Especially on grass, and even more so on grass that is wet!) That hurts, too. The performance advantages have generally been judged to outweigh (and by far) the extra burden of having to get the littler kids to wear them and to learn and deal with the risks the cleats impose. The hazards posed to other players by someone wearing cleats are pretty straight forward. Ask older players if they've ever had a collision where they ended up coming away with a cleat mark on a body part. Chances are good they have. But we generally play with our cleats down, and besides, the rules (Laws of the Game) require that tackles be made with the shoes (cleats) down. That's a specific burden placed on the players to minimize the possibility of injury to an opponent. If a player slides in to make a tackle and aims one of his cleats at his opponent's leg and ends up spiking him, it almost certainly will result in discipline from the referee. A caution is probably guaranteed, and it isn't hard for the official to justify a red card and the subsequent send off for that offending player who deliberately (or even inadvertently) lifts his cleats in a tackle. But little kids are not allowed to slide tackle anyway. Oh, and someone has to buy the cleats, too. Don't forget that. The good news is that a lot of soccer clubs, especially recreational ones, have shoe swaps. And there are thrift stores and second hand sports stores. There are a lot of good used shoes out there. What little kid doesn't outgrow his shoes before he wears them out? Don't forget to pick up a can of spray shoe disinfectant. It's that stuff like they use at the bowling alley. Anyway, little kids should be wearing soccer cleats when playing soccer. The risks are minimal, and can be managed by the player, the coach and the officials. As to the benefits of cleats? No "real" soccer player, young or old, recreation or competitive, would dream of playing in a match without them. Lastly, there's this. What soccer kid is gonna wanna play the game without the proper shoes, the shin guards, the long socks and the uniform? I've never met one. Ever.

In modern times the pentathlon has been replaced by decathlonHow many events are in this activity?

The Decathlon is comprised of Ten (10) events. The Pentathlon is comprised of Five (5) events.

There are a combined fifteen (15) events. However, the pentathlon's five events are also encompassed within the decathlon as well. Therefore, technically there are only Ten (10) unique events between the two competitions.
