It is extremely unlikely that any doctor will prescribe opiates to someone unless an X-ray, CAT scan or MRI image proves that there is something wrong with him/her that is known to cause severe pain. I understood this quote to mean that 'religion' in the general sense keeps the people listless and sedated as an opiate or opium leaves people. Opiates can cause a person to sleep their life away, not caring about eating, working, or even their loved ones, eventually sleeping themselves to death. But paradoxically, opiates can also alter the consciousness of the users, and free them from religious dogma. Religion means a "set of rules", rules to follow in order to guarantee an afterlife. It's used by the people in power to control the people who are not in power (the masses). It convinces them to accept and endure the suffering and injustices in this life because heaven awaits them. It prevented the masses from questioning and ultimately changing the current ways so the people who were in power could stay in power.

The above is very near to the mark, but misses the main point. Let's put the famous Karl Marx quote in context:

As you can see, Marx was claiming that religion is an artificial creation as a coping mechanism for people to deal with their miserable, oppressed lives. He then goes on to describe it in a manner somewhat similar to Plato's "allegory of the cave"- that people become "addicted" to this "drug", and refuse to come off it, even though their lives may be better if they did.

So he wasn't claiming that it was a way to control people as the previous answerer states; it was a way for the people to deal with their awful lives, and can prevent them from taking action to better their situation.

I see a lot of different answers for this question, but the truth is that everyone is different and has their own reaction to it. It depends if you are taking subs on a regular basis, at what dose, or if once in a while. I used to take subs when I couldnt afford the real stuff and still got high 12 hours after taking an 8mg sub. However, being on a maintinence program now at 16mg a day, it would take about a week to feel anything since it builds up in your system. You wont get sick but you likely wont feel anything and so you may do more, but the problem is you can easily overdose that way. IF you take the suboxone sublingually as directed, most the naloxone or blocking part isn't absorbed, so you can take other opiates without getting sick, you just might not feel them. It may still help for Sub withdrawl tho if you miss a dose, you just wont get high off it.

Diamorphine is not actually stronger than morphine per se, but it does act a lot quicker than morphine. Diamorphine is converted into morphine in the body and although diamorphine and morphine are almost identical, doses of them are not therapeutically equivalent. For example, 30mg of diamorphine is the same as 45mg of morphine.

So maybe diamorphine can be thought of as being stronger than morphine, as it takes 1/3 less to give the same effect. Also the quicker onset of diamorphine can give the impression of it being stronger.

From experience, I was given 30 mg's when I first went to the clinic and really felt it. Most people say 20 mg's is a good starting dose. Before this, I had a 80 mg a day OxyContin habit. Be very careful when starting Methadone as it is VERY dangerous at first. If you take 20 mg and do not feel it, do not take more that day, wait until the next day before increasing your dosage, as Methadone has a very long half-life and is still in your system even if you don't feel it. Many OD's occur from this.
