Vodka and orange juice the screwdriver where did it get its name?

This story was written by Time Magazine. I give the short version

In 1949 American Engineers working in oil fields in Middle East mixed orange juice and vodka together and shared drinks with Turkish and Balkan men at a bar. The drink was referred to as a "Yankee concoction." The story concludes that one American engineer poured the vodka into the can of juice and mixed it with a screwdriver.

And the name was born. Whatever variation you may here it comes down to the fact that the juice and vodka were mixed with a screwdriver.

Anecdotally, Vodka mixed with prune juice is called a PILE DRIVER!!

Why do you dilute orange juice?

We dilute our juices (which we only get not from concentrate). The amount we dilute varies from juice to juice but it can be as high as 3:4 parts water or as little as 1:4 parts water. We do this for several reasons:

  • Healthier for a variety of reasons but a simple web search should tell you. Mainly to do with having a higher fluid intake, less sugar and less acidity which is better for the stomach and the teeth.
  • Cost. We have a large family, if it costs £4 for 2 liters of orange juice by diluting at 1:2 parts water we have doubled the amount of orange juice for the same price.
  • Better on the environment, if we all did it there would be more fruit to go around, less travel and the overall cost of juice would drop as the demand dropped.

How can orange juice manufactures say their orange juice is 100 if it is from concentrate and has water and sugar in it?

Brilliant point basically they cant its not the truth they just tend to say that to make people bye the juice!! PS: great question!

This answer is not correct. The orange juice you mention is indeed 100% juice. A quick example just say you juice enough oranges to make 1 gallon of 100% juice, then in order to make it less expensive to transport and to make it stay fresher longer you concentrate it. By that I mean you remove some of the water and sugar by mechanical means. Then you when you make your orange juice from concentrate you need to put back the water and sugar that you took out in the first place. That is how you make 100% juice from concentrate.

Can a plant grow taller with orange juice or with coca cola?

Orange juice is more acid, and has more solute than Coca-Cola. So the plant (which will do best with just plain pure water) will probably tolerate Coca-Cola better. But either drink has the capacity to cause bacteria to grow in the soil, and either one could damage the roots of a plant.

The only time either drink might be of benefit is if the soil is alkaline, as their acid would tend to make the soil closer to neutral.

What happens when you mix water and orange juice?

When you mix water and orange juice you get watered down or diluted orange juice. If there is much more water than juice, you just get a yellowish water with a faint orange flavor. It will not be harmful but it will not taste very good.

If you have about 10 percent juice and the rest is water, you an add some sugar and maye citric acid (sour salt) for tartness and it would be similar to buying orange drinks but at a great saving. It just won't have the right color. You can buy a little bottle of orange food coloring, add a drop to the orange drink at it will look normal again.
