Czar Peter I (later called the Great) wanted to westernize Russia, after he returned from the trip his mother sent him on to Europe. On his trip he found out that even Europe's poorest were richer then Russia's riches.

Peter the Great ruled Russia from 1682 until 1725. Even though his nobles opposed any changes, Peter insisted that Russia needed to modernize. He brought science and technology to the country and, as a consequence, a new class developed, a middle class bourgeoisie.

Peter the Great successfully westernize and modernize Russia but failed when he fought the Ottoman Turks for warm-water ports on the Black Sea. However, in 1795, Russia successfully gained access to warm-water ports under the leadership of Catherine the Great.

He increased the number of schools, traveled on an eighteen month tour of England and the Netherlands, discovered that Russian knowledge of the outside world was quite limited. He sought out tutors among the foreign community in Moscow to learn basic skills of navigation and shipbuilding and enjoyed practical subjects, mechanics, geography, and military strategy.

No Ivan "the terrible" died in the late 1500's before Ivan, Peters brother was even born.

His religion was Russian Orthodox Christianity. He had friends who were Catholic and Lutheran and attended a few services in the Lutheran church. He said he hated Jews more than Muslims but had 13 officers in his army hung when they were planning a pogram and hired Jews who would convert to Orthodoxy. He sent an atheist to Siberia because he said religion is the basis of an oath and without an oath there is no society. He had a girl friend and a wife who were Lutheran though the last converted on having their child. He certainly did not hate other religions and when told to burn all churches of the foreigners and throw them out of Russia on the deathbed of Joachim the head of the Orthodox Church, he went out and bought a "German" suit. He was supported as the Tzar by the Orthodox Church and had no reason not to practice the religion although he did make it subordinate to the government after the death of Adrian, the successor of Joachim.

Peter I (the Great) and his half-brother Ivan V ruled under the regency of his half-sister Sofiya from 1682 to 1689. When Peter became old enough, Sofiya was packed off to a monastery for her treachery. Peter and Ivan jointly ruled Russia until 1696 when Ivan died of one of the many illnesses he had suffered all of his life. Peter carried on alone and really came into his own. He dragged Russia into the European world and picked up European technology and led Russia to become a world power before his death in 1725. One way or another, Peter I (the Great) ruled Russia from 1682 to 1725 when he died without leaving an heir to the throne.

Peter the Great, the czar of Russia was an important person in the history of Russia. He is an important leader because he tried to modernize Russia. He wanted to bring Russia closer to the Western European nations that were more sophisticated then Russia.

Peter the great was a vivacious Czar who ruled from 1672 to 1725. His accomplishments were the creation of the first Russian Navy, expansion of trade, and military reforms. Peter the great established the City of St. Petersburg. Peter started the long journey of the modernization of Russia.

Peter the Great built his capital city on land near Russia's border with Finland. It was marshland where the river Neva meets the Gulf of Finland's easternmost shore. It was intended to be Russia's contact with the Western world unlike Moscow which was more in contact with the Eastern world. He named it St. Petersburg after his patron saint, St. Peter.

Peter the Great realized as did future Russian and Soviet leaders that it's necessary to have access to the seas all year, not just in warm weather. A nation needs open ports for trading and defense purposes.As an aside, the most despotic nation of Russia supported the Union in the US Civil War. The reason for this that the US allowed the Russian war fleet to conduct sea maneuvers in Winters, allowing them safe haven in San Francisco and sometimes on the east coast of the US.

Peter the Great was a great man who loved war, He also simulated it with cannons with leather cannon balls. Peter the great also put his step sister in prision as a nun.

Catherine followed Peter the Great and continued to implement his program.
