It is hard to say which movie or stage-play the questioner means...there are several movies and several TV movies and several musicals and several stage plays of the Phantom of the Opera. I do not want to go through all of them what professional critics had to say for each one.

Raoul and the Persian get into one of the Phantom's traps and have trouble getting out. When they finally do get out, they are in an empty sewer. They hear the Phantom talking to Christine in another room. He wants to marry her. He is giving her two options to choose from: "scorpions" and "grasshoppers". If she chooses scorpions, that means that she will marry him and nobody gets hurt. If she chooses grasshoppers, that means she will not marry him, but he will kill Raoul, the Persian and everybody in the Opera house. She gives her by 11 o'clock pm to make her decision. By 11, she chooses scorpions. Raoul and the Persian hear that and think she is making a bad choice. The empty sewer fills up with fresh water, and Raoul and the Persian drink some of the water (because they have been in the trap for a long time.) The water keeps rising and rising and they don't know when it will stop rising. The water goes back down and Raoul and the Persian find the Phantom and Christine in the room they were in. Christine's eyes fill up with her tears and she hugs Raoul. He decides to let her and Raoul go after Christine kisses his forehead, he demands her and Raoul leave him alone and begs her to return his wedding ring after he dies. She follows his request return the ring at his grave. He confessed to Daroga that she kissed him and she did not die. She remained alive. He wept realizes he wrong to keep her that she deserved happiness, first time in life anyone ever kissed him, not even his mother would kiss him. He tells Daroga his life is near the end. In a few days later, on the front page of the local newspaper, it states "ERIK EST MORT" which in French means, "ERIK IS DEAD" (the Phantom's name was Erik). It turns out he died from being so in love with Christine.

They did cut out the song no one would listen which is Minnie Drivers song (learn to be lonely) but just changed the words.
