What are some bad things about plastic?

"One bad thing about plastic is its bad for the enviroment. You should use reuse able things that isn't plastic. Most wastes biodegrade (compost) but plastics do not." Plastic is not inherently "bad for the environment", it depends entirely on how you manage your plastics waste. If you carelessly go around throwing plastic bags and empty plastic containers onto the ground, then of course it's a problem. If you collect and recycle them then there isn't a problem. Synthetic plastics in the environment basically just sit there - they are not intrinsically toxic or harmful. The comment "most wastes biodegrade but plastics do not" is complete nonsense. Firstly, plastics DO biodegrade, they just do it very slowly. Also, if you place paper (recycled paper or any other type) into a landfill site, THAT will not biodegrade for years either. The reason is simple - biodegradation requires oxygen, and the inside of landfill sites are basically oxygen-free. No bugs can survive there, so no paper can degrade. The whole "use paper cups, they're more environmentally friendly" thing is pseudoscientfic claptrap. They key point is the way that you handle and manage the waste, not what the waste is made of.

How do stitches made from smart polymers work?

When a shape memory polymer is used to stitch a wound loosely, the temperature of the body makes the thread tighten and close the wound, applying just the right amount of force. This is an example of a 'smart' polymer. i.e. one that changes in response to changes around it. In this case a change in temperature causes the polymer to change its shape. Later, after the wound is healed, the material is designed to dissolve and is harmlessly absorbed by the body. Hope this helps:)

Why is dangerous to burn polymers?

It is dangerous because of the dangerous gases that form from polymers in the burning process. When polymers such as plastics are burned carbon containing gases are released. During the burning process, the carbon combines with oxygen present in the atmosphere & forms oxides of carbon. These gases have been linked global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, acid rain,etc. They create harmful effects on our ecosystem. It depends what type of polymer it is - if you're talking about polyethylene or polypropylene for example, the only gases you will generate are carbon dioxide and water vapour. These are not "dangerous" - yes, they are linked to climate change, but then you would get exactly the same gases by buring paper or wood.

What is Polymer concrete? It is also known as resin concrete because synthetic resins are used instead of cement in its manufacturing. Density of cement concrete Density of normal concrete is in the order of about 2400 kg per cubic metre. The density of light-weight concrete will be less than 1900 kg per cubic metre. To call the concrete, as high density concrete, it must have unit weight ranging from about 3360 kg per cubic metre to 3840 kg per cubic metre, which is about 50% higher than the unit weight of conventional concrete. They can, however be produced with the densities upto 5280 kg per cubic metre using iron as both fine and coarse aggregate. The high density concrete is used in the construction of radiation shields. Density of polymer concrete Normally, the density of polymer concrete is not more than 2260 kg per cubic metre, when you use normal aggregates like granite stone chips and river sand as you do in standard cement concrete. When you use aggregates obtained from iron ore or iron rod pieces, you can make high density polymer concrete upto 5140 kg per cubic metre.

Kevlar (Aromatic Polyamides) is used in tire reinforcement. Polybutadiene (Butadiene Rubber, BR) is used for the carcass and side wall. Natural rubber is a polymer, and they put polyurethane in tire rubber too. While aramids like kevlar are often used in car and motorcycle tires, nylon (less expensive and works fine) is used in bicycle tires.

Why do people hate straws more than other forms of plastic waste?

Straws are an easy target for environmentalists because they are so prevalent and because they're simple to replace or forgo. Because they're so small and are often made of multiple types of plastic, single-use plastic straws usually can't be recycled. Because of this, it's estimated that Americans alone use upwards of 100 million straws per day (the often-cited figure of 500 million per day has been disputed, but not by much). Activists have found it relatively easy to convince people to decrease their straw use—some restaurants have started asking if customers want a straw with their drink instead of giving them out automatically. Those restaurants have seen a 50 to 80 percent reduction in single-use plastic straws—that's a big result from a pretty simple fix. Not only is it fairly easy to get people to cut down on straw use, but there are also a multitude of more eco-friendly options on the market, like reusable stainless steel straws or biodegradable paper straws. All in all, it's not really about hating the concept of straws or thinking that straws are a worse form of waste than any other single-use plastic item. It's more about the relative ease of convincing people to limit their straw use or switch to alternative types of straws.
