Find other sources of energy and stop using fossil fuels. The only satisfactory way to prevent damage to the environment from acid rain is to reduce the amount of pollution from burning fossil fuels. However, this will take a long time and immediate measures are needed to safeguard the environment. Stop pollution.
Acid rain is formed when pure rain falls down and catches onto all those gross chemicals in the air, which lowers it pH level and makes it the acidic water it is. (that's why it smells so good after the rain, it's clean air!!)
Use solar electricity, keep only the necessary electrical appliances on, and only use your car (if you have one) if you have to (buy an electric scooter). The above answers certainly cover a lot of the issues, however, we'll also need to plug up all of the volcanoes, since the largest single source of sulfur dioxide (and therefore acid rain) is volcanic eruptions. Another big eruption from St. Helens and we're back into a big acid rain cycle downwind. Of course, there are other eruptions around the world; we have to plug up the Hawaiian volcano, and the one in Alaska. Since most of the oxides of nitrogen are produced naturally, we should find a way to reduce their natural production. Since volcanoes produce far more oxides of nitrogen AND sulfur compounds than humans produce we should find a way to cap volcanoes before they erupt.
