Is it safe to eat basil while pregnant?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Nursing Herbal Medicine Handbook (Eds.: J. A. Schilling McCann, W. J. Kelly; Publisher: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins; pg. 27-28) says, "Basil contains estragole (70% to 85% of essential oil) as a major component and smaller amounts of safrole. Estragole may have mutagenic effects if taken internally in massive amounts, but it's safe to use as a spice....Pregnant women, breast-feeding women, infants, and young children should avoid using basil" in medicinal quantities.

In plain English, you can use it in food, but using the essential oil is not safe in pregnancy.

Are shrimp insects?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Well,um, I think shrimp and cooked roaches is distant casinds, very distant ya know. But you can really notis da rasemblans - da hard xoskeleton and all dat jazz. I wonder how a cooked cockroach will fart up with buttered shirmps. mmmmm mmmmm mmmmmm Addin 2 dat shrimps are crustacans and cooked roaches are like soo good with pepper, tomatos and ah beer. Insects and crustaceans all belong under da category of enrthropods - animals which have joint legs. In lame mans term, there is three kind of enthrtopods - Insects, ants and their families, insects again, and Jeniffer Aniston. Now, just think bout dis Crustacans is nown 4 its larj size despite the presens of exoskeleton. Insects anywho can not grow as prety as a king crab because of they xoskeleton. Yet why do crustacans taste better when they are fried in olive oil? Why insects sooo do not? Insects growth are registred by the Earths gravity, they cannnot carry dat exoskleton if they is to become biger and there boy would like sooo be smashed by Gravitys force. Crustacans on my other hand grows on da sea where I love to swimm, get a tan and have a few beers is much better than da land. It is almost like zero gravity on dat,! on cocnlusion, ya the two have nice resemblance.

Can pregnant women eat salami?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, Parmesan cheese comes from cow's milk, and that is what a child needs to grow (and it helps make yours and the baby's bones stronger).

If you are worried about Listeria (that can cause miscarriages), which is sometimes found in cheeses, Parmesan is not on the list. Parmesan is considered safe. Listeria tends to be found in softer, moister processed foods. For instance, blue cheese is not recommended during pregnancy. Neither are hot dogs or bologna. Cream cheese is an exception, as long as it was made from pasteurized milk. Pasteurized soft cheese like cream cheese and cottage cheese are in the clear. You need to worry more about soft mold ripened cheeses. Keep in mind, in countries like the US, the chances of Listeria are very low, but doctors recommend the precaution anyway. It is only for 40 weeks, so why take the chance? Your doctor can tell you all about which foods have a higher risk factor.

Can pregnant women eat special k bars?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There should be no problem with this. Just make sure you are aren't just eating a Special K bar or following the Special K diet during pregnancy. It does not contain near enough protein or nutrients to be eaten alone. If you eat a special k bar for breakfast, also have an egg or a glass of milk along with a cup of fruit juice (pure juice not from concentrate) or a fruit serving.

Hello, My wife ate Swiss chesse when she was pregnanat and no problems occured. I have never heard of it ever being a problem however in relation to cheese generally I have seen warning labels on a small number of French / Swiss cheeses recently sold in the UK which are a speciality as they are unpasteurised and hence a risk if pregnant. So as long as you avoid unpasteurised cheese you should be fine. Paul

Is vanilla extract harmful?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Not if its real vanilla. True vanillia extract is just the result of vanilla beans soaked in alcohol, usually bourbon or rum, until the flavor of the vanilla is thouroghly encorporated, then the solid matter is removed. So drinking vanilla extract is similar to drinking very strongly flavored bourbon. Be warned, it will not be sweet, and often the price of the vanilla is a direct correlation to the quality of the beans and alcohol. Artificial vanilla, on the other hand, is a combination of chemicals, usually man made and synthesized to taste like vanilla. Personally I wouldn't touch the stuff, not even for baking.

Can pregnant women eat tiger nuts?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are no known health risks or complications for pregnant women eating Yellow Nutsedge (also known as tiger nuts, earth almonds and chufa sedge). The scientific name is cyperus esculentus.

Apparently the produce of cyperus plants is good for suppressing the feeling of nausea, which may help with the pregnancy symptom of morning sickness. But I do not see very much evidence of that being backed up by research. However the oils of the tiger nut are known to help relive the symptoms of diarrhoea and indigestion.

Tiger nuts appear to be safe to ingest during pregnancy. However whether they actually work in suppressing morning sickness is up for debate.
