But that's not exactly what Muslims believe.
The Islamic point of view is that Islam is God's (Allah's) favourite religion as mentioned in the holy book of Muslims ("Quran" or "Koran") and Islam has existed ever since this earth came in to being.
According to the Koran, Allah sent "ADAM", the father of all human beings, and "AMMA HAWWA" (Eve), the mother of all human beings.
Allah sent them Adam and Eve from Heaven to Earth to punish them for their disobedience to his orders. The Koran mentions many of the prophets including "Moses" , "Jesus", "Abraham", "Noah", and many more. The Koran says that all of the prophets were Muslims (a Muslim is "one who submits to our Creator").
The Koran also says that Christians and Jews have made assumptions about the earlier prophets, that they were Christians or Jews. But the Koran makes a clear statement that they were Muslims (again, Muslims are those who submit to their Creator).
So considering these statements in the Koran, Islam has been here since ADAM came to earth. And the Koran states that Allah revealed the final heaven-sent message (the Koran) to Muhammad and in doing so completed the religion (al Islam).
Answer 2Islam was begun by the Prophet Muhammad, who is believed by Muslims to have received his first revelation from the angel Gabriel in 610 CE. After attracting a few close followers in Mecca, Muhammad had to flee for his life to the city of Medina in 622 CE, the start of the Islamic calendar. Muhammad is said to have continued to receive revelations, which were compiled into the Quran, until his death in 632 CE.

Answer 5 There are two concepts for Islam definition:1. Islam in its universal sense:
Islam is an Arabic word that means submission and surrender to God (as the one and only one God). In this sense Islam began by the universe creation where all God creatures were created under their submission (Islam) to God. Upon start of mankind, they are taught through God prophets to be on full submission (Islam) to God.
All prophet missions; including Adam, ..., Noah, ..., Abraham, ..., Moses, ..., Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all); was to hold full submission (Islam) to the one and only one God, the Creator, with no partner, no son, no father, no companion, no associate, and no equivalence (defined as monotheism). In this sense: Islam per God revelation of Torah to Moses is called ,Judaism, Islam per God revelation of the bible to Jesus is called Christianity, and Islam per God revelation of Quran to Muhammad is called the very name Islam as it is the last God religion
2. Islam per Quran:
Islam religion was founded by Allah (or God in English and sane God worshiped in Judaism and Christianity) by the start of Quran revelation by God to prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the Angel Gabriel (Jibril) in Mecca (currently in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) in year 610 AD. Quran revelation continued also when the prophet (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina (that is also located in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) until prophet death in year 632 AD. It is important to emphasize that Quran is last God holy. Quran was neither corrected nor altered (even on the level of a letter) since its revelations. This explains why only one Arabic version is read and recited and broadcasted everywhere in the world. This is because of many reasons; mainly:

Why are the words quran Muslim and Muhammad sometimes spelled like qur'an moslim and Mohammad?
These words are spelled consistently in Arabic: (1) قرآن x (2) مسلم and (3) محمد. The problem is that the changing of the alphabets results in their being an inexact equivalence between letters and sounds. As a result, there are a number of different transliterations, all attempting to best replicate the Arabic.
Who is the founder of Shiite Islam?
Shī'a Islam, also Shi'ite Islam or Shi'ismis the second largest branch of Islam, after Sunnism. Shi'as adhere to the teachings of Muhammad and the religious guidance of his family (who are referred to as the Ahl al-Bayt) or his descendents known as Shi'a Imams. Muhammad's bloodline continues only through his daughter Fatima Zahra and cousin Ali which alongside Muhammad's grandsons are the Ahl al-Bayt. Thus, Shi'as consider Muhammad's descendents as the true source of guidance while considering the first three ruling Sunni caliphs a historic occurrence and not something attached to faith. Shi'a Islam, like Sunni Islam, has at times been divided into many branches; however, only three of these currently have a significant number of followers and each of them has a separate trajectory.
From political viewpoint the history of Shia was formed from several parts. The first part is emergence of Shia which starts after Muhammad's death in 632 and lasts until Battle of Karbala in 680. This part coincides with the Imamah of Ali, Hasan ibn Ali and Husayn. The second part is the differentiation and distinction of Shia as a separate sect in Muslim community and opposition of Sunni caliph. This part starts after battle of Karbala and lasts until the formation of Shia states about 900. During this section Shia is divided into several branches. The third section is the period of Shia states. The first Shia state was Idrisid dynasty (780-974) in Maghreb. Then Alavids dynasty (864 - 928) established in Mazandaran (Tabaristan), north of Iran. These dynasties were local. But they followed by two great and powerful dynasty. Fatimid Caliphate which formed in Ifriqiya in 909. Then ruled over varying areas of the Maghreb, Egypt and the Levant until 1171. The Buyid dynasty emerged in Daylaman, north of Iran, about 930 and then ruled over central and western part of Iran and Iraq until 1048. In Yemen Imams of various dynasties usually of the Zaidi sect established a theocratic political structure that survived from 897 until 1962.

Why was the quran revealed in piecemeal?
tHE QURAN WAS REVEALED IN PIECE MEAL DUE TO THE FOLLOWING REASONS:
1. The Quran is the final book of Allah and as such it should stay alive until the end of this world. Such a Book should contain the solutions to different situtations, problems which may likely to occurre in different times. So, the Quran was revealed according to the circumstances and situations that people during the time of the Prophet (S) faced. Meaning of course, the Quran was revealed according to the circumstances and it contained the verdicts for each problems. The Orders and Prohbitions of Islam , therefore, not implimented at once. The first thing to impliment the Orders and Prohibitions required was the Belief in Allah, Belief in the Hereafter and other compulsory Beliefs. So, during the period of Prophet in Makka the quran taught the said matters. After having taught the Belief and after having believed in the Oneness of Allah by the people, then it would be easy to formulate other rules to them. So, during the life in Madina, Quran gave importance to the compulsory deeds in Islma, and the rules regarding to set up an ideal society. This means, the rules of Islam was established gradually and slowly. This is the reason why the quran was revealed in piece meal.
2. The verses of the Quran was to be stayed alive till the end of this univese. If the Quran was not revealed in piece meal, it would have been difficult for the followers of Quran to learn byheart. The Quran was later compiled from the memories of the companions and from the records written by some of the writers of the Prophet. At the same time, the quran if was revealed at once, this facilities would have been lost.
