Protestantism

Generally associated with the protests against the Catholic Church and its methods, Protestants follow Jesus Christ. One of the early scholars to lead the break from the established church was Martin Luther. If you have questions about anything to do with Protestantism, this is place to ask them.

What is the place of Scriptures in life?

.

Catholic AnswerThe Sacred Scriptures are the "Word of God {Jesus Christ} in the very Words of God." The Sacred Scriptures serve as nourishment for the Christian life (see CCC {Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph} 141), they are a source of prayer (see CCC 2563-2654), they are a source of strength for the Church (see CCC 104, 131). They teach the truth (CCC 107). from the Catechism of the Catholic Church # 141:The Church {and individual Christians} has always venerated the divine Scriptures as she venerated the Body of the Lord (the most Holy Eucharist)" (Dei Verbum 21): both nourish and govern the whole Christian life. "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Ps 119:105, cf. Isa 50:4)

What is the difference between Methodists and congregationalists?

  • There is no great difference in their beliefs.
  • Methodists do not have parochial schools.
  • Methodist do not drink alcoholic wine at communion.
  • Methodists say " forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" when reciting the Lord's prayer. Lutherans say "debts" and "debtors"

I am guessing that the order of worship may be more controlled in the Lutheran church, but that may not be true.

Addition: Methodists are allowed to change up the order of worship a little bit, especially contemporary services, but Methodists general cling to the traditional "method" of worshiping. Many people brought up Methodist are very appreciative and aware of having a printed or posted order of worship for reference, especially when things are changed around.

There are many many differences, between the two bodies. I was raised in the Methodist and Presbyterian church , which are much more similar de to the roots of the denominatons.

Lutheranism was patterned from Reformer Martin Luther a Roman Catholic priest. Although his 95 thesis was posted on the fdoor the Lutheran Church has remained the closest of the Protestant bodies to Catholic in doctrine and liturgy. Although Anglican is also similar to Catholic, there are many points of differences in doctrin which Anglican has more in common with the Reformed faith.

Methodism which came from the word Methodical traces its roots to John Wesley an Anglican priest. The Methodist church became more of an evangelical holliness and revivalist denomiation. Some churches will vary in style. While still having some similarities to Anglican, they still retain close resemblance to the Presbyterian church as well. Methodist are much less liturgical than Lutherans and have differences in doctrine regarding the sacraments of communion and baptism.

Lutherans believe in consubstantiation ( similar to Catholics) with regards to Communion while Methodist hold a spiritual significance, much different.

Methodist services can resemble a low episcopal or Presbyterian or Congregational church, but not a Lutheran liturgy at all, which again is much more similar to Roman Catholic.

I would like to take issue with the above answer. The United Methodist Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church are now in full communion with each since 2008. Both are liberal, mainline Protestant denominations that celebrate the Holy Eucharist and Baptism as sacraments. The Roman Catholic Church believes in transubstantian not consubstantian. The UMC believe in the living presence of christ while celebrating Holy Communion-like the Episcopal Church.

Both share a belief in the Apostolic Succession and both have deacons, elders and Bishops. The Lutherans are more apt to be more formal in their worship and be more "Episcopalian" than an average UMC service. But both celebrate the Christian year and festivals and both have prayer books. The UMC prayer book is very similar to the Book of Common Prayer found in the Anglican Communion. John Wesly was a "high church" Anglican Priest and stayed that way till his death. Because of this, the UMC is predominately Anglican in doctrine and theology and in its liturgy. The Lutherans have much in common with the Episcopal Church and both have been in full communion since 2002.

What do souls actually do in heaven?

One thought:

According to the Bible, those who DO go to heaven, are there for a very particular purpose, which is noted at Revelation 5:10 where it says: "And You have made them a kingdom (royal race) and priests to our God, and they shall reign [as kings] over the earth!"(AMP)(1Corinthians 6:2) (1 Corinthians 1:9)(Philippians 3:14) The majority of 'meek'(humble/teachable) mankind will 'inherit the earth'(Matthew 5:5/ Psalm 37:10+11+29) which was created to be inhabited(Isaiah 45:18), but those chosen by God to go to heaven will "rule with Christ"(Revelation 20:4) and assist in helping those meek ones on the earth reach perfection, as was God's original purpose for mankind on earth.(Genesis1:28)(Isaiah 65:21-25)(Psalm 115:16)(Ecclesiastes 1:4)(Habakkuk 2:14)(Revelation 14:1-4)(Revelation 7:4+9+13-17)(Revelation 21:3-5)(Proverbs 10:30)(Proverbs 2:21+22)

A pastor who leaves the ELCA may retain all their retirement accounts with the ELCA Board of Pensions (BOP), transfer them to the LCMC-provided investment opportunities, or transfer them to any private retirement programs of their choice. Likewise, the served congregation can continue to contribute to the pastor's retirement plan regardless of where that plan is held.

I am not married but would like to wear my dad's wedding band on my right had. Is it ok to wear a wedding band on your right hand if you are not married?

No.

Yes. It means nothing in regard to being married (in the usual sense of the word) if worn on the right hand because wedding rings are always worn on the left...except by nuns. Probably it would be apparent to most people that you are not a nun, but you may get teased about it . People often wear rings of special sentimental value on the right hand...I'd do whatever suits you best.

why would you want to send out the wrong message if you are not married. Apparently now a days a married persons wears the wedding band in either hand. Better yet, if that ring has a special sentimental value, ask your dad to pass it on to you when you really actually get married.

What is ascetic protestantism?

Weber then attempts to clarify the ways in which the Puritan idea of the calling and asceticism influenced the development of the capitalistic way of life. First, asceticism opposed the spontaneous enjoyment of life and its opportunities. Such enjoyment leads people away from work in a calling and religion. Weber argues, "That powerful tendency toward uniformity of life, which today so immensely aids the capitalistic interest in the standardization of production, had its ideal foundations in the repudiation of all idolatry of the flesh." Furthermore, the Puritans rejected any spending of money on entertainment that didn't "serve God's glory." They felt a duty to hold and increase their possessions. It was ascetic Protestantism that gave this attitude its ethical foundation. It had the psychological effect of freeing the acquisition if goods from traditionalist ethics' inhibitions. Asceticism also condemned dishonesty and impulsive greed. The pursuit of wealth in itself was bad, but attaining it as the result of one's labor was a sign of God's blessing.

Thus, the Puritan outlook favored the development of rational bourgeois economic life, and "stood at the cradle of the modern economic man.

Why doesn't the United Methodist Church and the Roman Catholic Church become one church and call it the United Methodist- Roman Catholic Church?

Mostly because Methodists are opposed to Apostolic succession, Papal Authority, and Catholic bureaucracy. Catholics are not willing to give up any of those things.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Catholic Church is the one Church which Jesus Christ established to be His Mystical Body and bring all people to God. He guaranteed to be with It to the end of time and preserve it from all evil. The United Methodist Church is comprised of the descendants of people who were all in the Catholic Church and left. The Church has been working very hard through prayer and the ecumenical movement to bring them back into the Church. There is an entire congregation in Rome for which this is their entire purpose: to bring all separated brethern back into the Church; it has been the fondest wish and prayer of all the recent pontiffs. Everything that we have, in the Church, we have been left, as an inheritance, from Jesus Christ. To say that we are not willing to give up anything that Our Blessed Lord has given us is sort of a no-brainer, although I doubt if Jesus left us "bureaucracy" in the modern understanding of the word!

Did Jesus claim equality with God?

Yes, in one sense. He said to have seen him was to have seen the father. You could also say he did not claim equality with God as that would be to say he was equal to God but distinct from him. He is God. You are not equal to yourself and you would never say you were equal to yourself. Only another person could claim to be equal to you.

AnswerYes, Jesus claimed equality with God because He was God incarnate [that is, 100% God and also 100% Man - and don't ask me to explain how!]

Why is the pulpit doctrinally important in the Presbyterian church?

This is getting into the fine points a bit.... But

One major purpose of the church is to enable a Teaching Elder (pastor) to expound the Word of God (the Bible) to the congregation. The members of the congregation listen attentively and, enabled by the Holy Spirit, apply the truths of God's Word to their lives. Thus, the sermon is of especial importance to the service and to the church, and this importance is highlighted by the presence of the pulpit.

The pulpit, as well as the Geneva gown worn by the pastor, also hides what the pastor is wearing from the congregation so that they won't be distracted by noticing what the pastor is wearing.
