Can Adderall make ADHD symptoms worse?

">Actually you seem lacking in knowledge for someone who's been practicing for 20 years. I disagree with many of the answers to this post. To answer this best, I think that it's important to understand the theory behind what causes ADHD. To simplify one of the main theories, it is believed that ADHD is connected Dopamine and Dopamine production. The theory suggests that those who suffer from ADHD have abnormally low levels of Dopamine (as well as other neurotransmitters). ADHD patients are prescribed Adderall in order to increase dopamine production. Ritalin and other similar medications inhibit the reuptake of dopamine.

That being said prolonged use of the medications could cause issues for those without ADHD, as they would be operating with higher than average levels of these neurotransmitters. Any time you are forcing your body to operate in a way that it isn't intended to, you run a risk. ADHD patients taking this medication are in a different category however. In these patients the medication normalizes these neurotransmitters.

Think about it like this. You have two people, one of which has a normal metabolism and the other has a very high metabolism. If they both go out to a restaurant, the one with the high metabolism has to eat more to be full and keep their body fueled and running optimally. The person with the normal metabolism wouldn't want to eat as much as their friend, as they would become overweight. Someone with ADHD needs to medication to regulate their neurotransmitters and keep their mind running optimally. Someone without ADHD taking this medication doesn't need this help, so the medication could cause damage to their system.

PartialIf absolutely nothing else, it can be confidently stated that Adderall and other stimulant based ADHD medications do in fact adjust your "hedonistic calibration." This adjustment by itself, at least in my opinion (studies support my opinion, too lazy to link) can definitely make your ADHD worse.

i think its possible, because excessive amounts of dopamine burn out other cell receptors, leading to cell loss, and eventual brain damage, making it even harder to concentrate and focus later in life. dopamine is needed to focus, but taking a medication to stimulate dopamine activity is not natural, and it will do more bad then good, in the long run. its this: If your house is cold, would you burn the furniture in your house, to make it warm? not that im against medication, its just that there are always other options to solving a problem.

I started taking stimulant medication since I was in 8'th grade. My senior year I started taking too much of it because I wanted to prevent the emotional down that happens when it wears off. My doctor got scared that I would start abusing it, or that I aleady was, so she has been taking me off of it slowly since then. By my third year in college I was almost completely off of adderall. My life was more awful the less I took, because I no longer knew how to deal with having ADD symptoms. I have just got a new doctor and am going back onto adderall again. I'm not sure if my ADD is worse. I don't think it is but I could be wrong. I think it's just that I'm not used to having to contain and control the problems that come with having ADD. If I hadn't taken the medication until now, I would have probably learned how to deal with my symptoms better than I am able today. Some people even say that you can train your brain to not even have symptoms, expecially during your youth. (Biofeedback might help with training your brain as well). By taking pills that took away my ADD problems, I didn't have to learn meathods of dealing, and I didn't have to train my brain. Thus I missed out on making my ADD better. But I don't think the ADD is any worse than it used to be; I just have to re-learn selfrestraint. I also don't think that you could ever train your brain completely to have no ADD problems. My boyfriend has ADD but was never given medication for it. While he can deal with his ADD better than I could right now off my pills, his symptoms by no means have disapeared. Plus I have met several adults who have never gotten treatment and are still haveing big problems. If I could do it all again I would have taken stimulants even earlier in life. It has turned my life around. Stimulants have enabled me to preform better in school. For the first time in my life I actually got A's and B's. I started taking better care of myself because they motivated me to be more productive. I don't know if I could have ever made it into college if I didn't have adderall or other stimulants. When I have the right medication, I can major in anything I want--even subjects that require a lot of work. Otherwise I would have to major in something that didn't require a lot of attention, like art, or hospitality management. One of my friends who has not received any treatment was trying a difficult major and he is now 26 and only a junior because he has had to repeat classes. He is not dumb at all; he just can't concentrate on anything. I learned from doctors that people who don't treat ADD also can have problems with depression too, which I have seen examples of in some of my friends with ADD. If you are willing to be on medication for maybe even your whole life, it would definitely improve your life. If you are not willing and you still take meds, when you come off your meds, it will be a lot harder to deal with it than it would have been. However, you would have the benefit of having a more productive life for the period that you were on meds.

I've been taking either Ritalin or Dexedrine for 15 years. My ADD isn't worse. I've had more symptoms of old age pop in, but going from age 35 to 50 would account for being more tired now and more forgetful as well. After all those years, if something dastardly was going to happen, it would have by now. I know life without stimulant medication would not be worth living.

ummmmmm it would probably be inappropriate for me to answer this question in my immediate condition considering circa 40 minutes ago i just tossed up my container of dexies and hit a home run with my skateboard and watched those orange grommits go flying into the gulch outside my apartment. If my math is correct i am currently peaking from my last dose of orangemen that i took at 12:00 (it is 2:08 PST). I have been taking the short acting dexidrine 3 times a day since a week after graduating high school. i am currently a sophomore in college. my life since high school in three hundred million ways has been three hundred million times different. if my life ended today there would be no doubt i would consider the last 15 or so months to be the most prolific era of my life. I did AMAZING things. Now this is not to say that these are some miracle drug, i also tried sooooooo much harder and dreamed sooooooo much bigger than i ever had. im not exactly sure what went wrong, it went wrong, or if something actually did go wrong. there are soo many ways to look at things, and i can't choose one. All i know is i couldn't hang anymore with my current situation and so i just chucked them. My testimony cannot be taken as anything close to a standard or ordinary case however. I did not go about getting treated in an orthodox way by any means. when i was diagnosed with ADD i didn't even know what to think. I took it pretty acceptingly, and i was pretty much the only one. None of my friends really beleived me or even believed in ADD. None of them even do now. I don't think anybody beleives in ADD, and they've got me wondering if i even believe in it. In retrospect, you probably shouldn't take much from this testimony, i probably shouldn't even have written it. Perhaps i shall come back in a few weeks and edit it once i have undergone the grave magnitude of imminent change resulting from my recent actions. I have to go to class.

ANSWER

It can be harder to accept ADD once it's treated. To experience ADD on a practical daily basis in is for the most part bull. 'Cut me a break from all the bunch of stupid crap going on all at once inside making everything complicated. I'm riding a bus. I just want to do this most simple routine but within seconds of silence I'll have a s-load of crap fill into my bucket about what i'm gona do next or what I'm gona do if I can't figure out what I'm gona do next or how I'm thinking about what and everything else all bunched that,

It's hard to not to wish for an easy way

to ride as simple as the wave

Does Vyvanse increase anxiety?

Stimulant medications, including amphetamines (i.e. Adderall, Vyvanse), do induce anxiety in some people. Other medications could be tried for treatment of ADHD if this anxiety is unbearable, or another medication could be used to treat this anxiety (i.e. a benzo or a mood stabilizer).

What time of day should you take adderall?

when your doctor tells you to!

ok, if you got them from the street.....

if you want to sleep.. 8 am

if you don't care... why are you asking?

if you are not used to amphetamines, they can last a LONG time! also there is a marked comedown if you're not accustomed to it. There's a reason they only give this stuff to people who need it.

Is it safe to take 8 Adderall?

It would obviously depend of the dosage. Taking 6 5mg Adderall would be the same as taking 1 30mg Adderall. So, to just say "8 Adderall" can be anywhere from 40mg to 240mg. It also depends on tolerance. If you have little or no amphetamine tolerance, I would not exceed 20-30mg in 1 dose. If your amphetamine tolerance is through the roof, you could probably handle a very large amount. This is not "safe" though, being that large doses of amphetamines can cause long term cardiovascular and psychological damage.

Can 30mg of Adderall kill you?

If you do 200 mg's at once, I would not be surprised if your end up in the hospital or if your a veteran, just reallllly speedy lol. that also depends on if it's insufflated or taken orally. I've done a s.hitload of adderall and focalin, all of it snorted, but im still alive and I've done dose's much higher than 200 mg in a time span of 4-6 hours. hope that helps

What is the common name of amphetamine?

Amphetamine is most commonly called "speed."

Some people call methamphetamine "speed" however that is not correct, only amphetamine is "speed"

Can you drink if you have taken Adderall?

Answer: They can. But I wouldn't recommend it. Your liver is already struggling enough as it is with all the liquor and beer, the last thing it needs is something like amphetamines to come tearing through it. So my best advice is give your liver a fighting chance and either don't take the Adderall or stop drinking. Personally, I find drinking alot more pleasurable as to likes of Adderall. hope this helps, Megan. *******

Can long term use of Adderall cause weight gain?

I really hope your not seriously asking that, but in case you are I'll answer it.....

Adderall's active ingredients are racemic amphetamine and dextroamphetine. Amphetamines are powerful stimulants capable of greatly inducing sympathetic nervous sytem responses. The result of this is an extremely decreased appetite and high metabolism. Both of those result in weight loss. Adderall is prescribed to some people who are morbidly obese as a means of making them lose weight.

Who created Ritalin?

Answer: It was patented in 1954 by Novartis International.

Can you take Zoloft welbutrin Vyvanse at the same time?

Provided you have read the drug information sheet with both products and it does not warn against taking one product with the other, when you take makes no difference since both are time realeased....but check with the prescribing doctor(s) first is always best.

Can you take Xanax and Vyvanse?

Is it ok to take Adderall and fat burners?

Answer: The Adderall alone should work fine... I'm not too sure if fat burners even work really. But like I said amphetamines will decrease your appetite significantly and if you try to eat healthy you will shed pounds, i promise, you really dont have to exercise when taking adderall, you still lose weight.

Has anyone tried a combination of Strattera with a low dose stimulant such as Metadate CD for a child?

I was an ADHD child mom tried everything to calm me down the worse it got the more depressed I got. one day I guess it was a cry for help or i am lucky that i didn't know what I was doing i tried to slice my wrist. that got me put in the hospital. after weeks of evaluations they put me on welbutrin and it helped i went from cs and d's to a's and b's. I did get off of it till just recently i experienced some mood swings and such. I was also a single mom for 3 years and divorced and when I met my current husband my brain tried to push him away thus the moods and such the welbutrin came to my rescue again. It has truly been a blessing in my life I dont know where I would be with out it

My daughter has been on everything imaginable, she did however take strattera for a short time. She is 13 years old and currently on depekote. They can't make up their minds what to diagnosis her as, but when she was on the strattera she did lose a lot of weight, but she vomited everyday. She didn't have an appetite and she was alot more hyper. So we took her off that. Then she was put on adderall and it made her dizzy. She had taken that several years before when she was about 9 years old. She was also on paxil for about 2 weeks when she was 11 years old which has caused her down fall. She was admitted into a physciatric hospital due to suicidal thoughts and basically going nuts. We have taken her off medications because they weren't doing any good at all. At this time if she misses a dose of her depakote we all just have to pack up and move out. Be very careful what you put your children on. We did find out, about a year later, that the new studies on paxil caused suicidal tendency. I don't know if as she grows older her problems get worse or if putting her on the paxil in the first place caused the chemical imbalance. I still don't think we've found the miracle drug combination yet, never tried her on welbutrin. Maybe that would be the next step.

akaleia's story

I am responding to the statement the user before me had with her experience of having her daughter on Paxil. I was 19 at the time and this was the first of any kind of mental medication I was put on, mostly for shyness and depression. Anyway, I gained 40 lbs on it, (I'm 28 now, it's still a struggle) and if I went even an hour without my dose of paxil, my face and hands would go numb and I would go into a panic fit, like a tatrum as a toddler. Mind you, I was on 40 mgs, I beleive.. it took a very long time to get off of. I even had to go down to 1/4 of the pill to wean myself off of it, eventually turning to Lexapro with good results. I would suggest a non-stimulant for her add, as well as nutrition, and just getting her involved in outside volunteering. Strattera is a good add/adhd drug. Discuss all of this with your dr of course. . Your post may be old, but maybe it will help others! Good luck, and once you find something that works, don't let someone talk you into something different!

How long has Adderall been on the market?

50 years

Ritalin was first manufactured in 1944. In 1957, after making improvements to the medication, the Ciba Pharmaceutical Company began selling it by the name "Ritalin" to treat disorders including depression, chronic fatigue, narcolepsy, and Mohr's Syndrome. During clinical studies, Ritalin was found to improve concentration and helped subjects manage tasks more efficiently, thus researchers concluded that the medication was effective in treating ADHD/ADD.

Can you take Adderall 15 mg Prozac 20 mg and 25 Xanax as needed?

You should only take your prescription medications as prescribed by your physician. However, 1mg of xanax is still not that high of a dosage, so if you were to take another 0.5mg, I don't see any reasons why you would have any problems.

How can you reduce the effects of Adderall if you are being forced to take it?

Good 2:00am in the morning to you!

I think I have had three tacos today. I'm physically hungry but I don't have any desire to actually eat anything. I'm tired, however I couldn't imagine being able to sleep for at least the next hour. And finally, (the reason I wound up in this article) my jaw hurts.

To answer the question, I handle the side effect by doing my best to figure out what it is that causes them. I am not a doctor or a PHD, but I have been taking Adderall since I was young and have gone significant periods of time without taking any (5+ yrs). To give you an idea of my history, for nearly the last 2 years I have taken Adderall IR (20 mg) twice daily. Now, to add to what I mean about what causes the symptoms: I have been taking the IR long enough to know that sometimes I will have the side effect and some times I will not have them. For instance, the reason I am up right now is because I forgot to eat lunch.

My ability to explain why lack of food causes some of my side effect is limited but here, but I'll try… the liver absorbs amphetamines and if the liver does not have enough or even different types of 'juices' to absorb the amphetamine then the amphetamine will release more slowly or quickly depending. If you keep track of the food you ate (or didn't) and what days you have side effects eventually you may find certain foods will give you certain side effects: Mine is anything with grain or lots of fiber.

Another side effect, the jaw ache, I have also have off and on. I have noticed it more when under stress or when I'm tired. Another thing I would like to add (<- not ADD) is I am a smoker L I know its bad… but I'm still young. I have noticed jaw movement more so, after I smoke. If I reduce smoking when I'm tired or stressed (doesn't that kill the point, though?) then I have less severe problems with aches.

Finally, allow me to add one more point for closing:

Not but thirty minutes ago when searching to far reaches of Google for what may help reduce the jaw ache (hot tea by the way*sip*) I came across several posts on Adderall. Again, I took Adderall from the time I hit second grade. So I am blown away to find out that the public conception of Adderall and AD/HD is liken to 'meth addicts' and 'coke'. Therefore, my closing argument in for the side effects of Adderall apparently is public stupidity J there have been several articles by teen-age girls wanting to be skinny and kid's wanting to know how much they should take to make the 'trip'. Therefore, let me say Adderall can and has been abused just like any other prescription drug.

However, as an adult I find it as the most effective tool when I need to curb my overactive, creative, tangent making, vivid, and yet often useful imagination. Adderall helps me remember and keep track of plans, and keeps me 'in the moment' to give attention to make those plans (I've saved loads by not having to pay all those speeding ticket!) All said I am willing to pay the price of having to the occasional side effect, in place of all of the results Adderall gives.

The affects of adderall are different to each and every person. Personally adderall gives me a sense of well-being and attentiveness in my studies. I am a college student and even though I do not have a diagnosed form of ADD of ADHD, I do have trouble concentrating on the strenous studies that I face every day. Adderall takes the pressure off on exceptionally stress-full days. Even though the high is short lived I still feel more accomplished on the the days when I take adderall compared to the days free of the drug. I do however feel the side-affects. I have a lowered sex-drive on the days I take adderall and a few days after I have taken the drug. I also I have a terrible taste in my mouth and everything else has an alkaline taste to it. Also occassionaly after I have come down from the high I have mild stomach pains. However I have not noticed an addiction to the drug or sleep related issues by using it. So far the benefits have out weighed the cons of adderall and I will continue to take the drug provided that I do not have any long term side effects from it.

What is in vyvanse?

Flushing Adderall out of your system?

Answer:

Nothing.

Time is the only way to sober you up when it comes to that. Wait a good 48-72 hours.

Vitamin C or any type of acidic beverage will also weaken the effects of adderall, so drink some orange juice!

Can you take Vyvanse and hydrocodone?

There are no known drug to drug interactions between these two medications, making them safe to take together. Make sure to contact you primary care provider prior to taking these two medications to ensure that it is safe.

Can you open Vyvanse caplule and take half if you need a little more than one 30mg?

The prescribing information mentions there is no problem with opening capsules. Adjusting dosage is something that should be done with a physician supervision only.

Is it okay to mix Vyvanse and phentermine?

No, you can't. When these medications are taken together they have an additive effect on each other; resulting in toxicity of both medications. This can lead to overstimulation of both the brain/nervous tissue and heart resulting serious and sometimes permeant effects that has been proven fatal in several cases.

How long will 140mg adderall keep one awake?

That depends on your tolerance & such. But probably at least 2 days.

Can you take night time sinus medicine with adderall?

The combination of Dextroamphetamine salts in adderall will not interact with benadryl. The benadryl will "cancel out" the effects of the Adderall.

This is a lie! I took ONE 30mg adderall around 8:30pm on Thursday night, after being awake until 3am that night i took 4 benadryl in hopes of getting some sleep.. the benadryl never worked, and now it Saturday and I have YET to get even 5 minutes of sleep. I feel terrible... I don't recommend mixing the two to anyone!
