What moral teachings do the Bible and Quran share?

In the Quran, you will find a chapter devoted to Mary, the mother of Christ and lots of instances where Jesus Christ is mentioned.

There are verses in the Quran that were called the 'Ten Commandments' or the 'Ten Instructions' by some scholars due to containing ten great commandments to mankind by Allah. These verses can be found in two places in the Qur'an.

The First: In Surat Al An'aam, Allah says:

(Say (O Muhammad): "Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited you from:

[1] Join not anything in worship with Him;

[2] be good and dutiful to your parents;

[3] kill not your children because of poverty" - We provide sustenance for you as well as them -

[4] "Come not near Al-Fawahish (great sins and illegal sexual intercourse) whether committed openly or secretly;

[5] and kill not anyone whom Allah has forbidden except for a just cause (according to Islamic law). This He has commanded you with that you may understand.

[6] And come not near to the orphan's property except to improve it until he or she attains the age of full strength;

[7] and give full measure and full weight with justice" - We burden not any person, but that which they can bear -

[8] "And whenever you give your word (i.e. judge between men or give evidence), say the truth even if a near relative is concerned,

[9] and fulfill the Covenant of Allah. This He commands you that you may remember.

[10] And verily, this (i.e. Allah's Commandments mentioned in the above two Verses) is my straight path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you from His path. This He has ordained for you that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious.)[1].

The second in Surah Al-Israa you may refer to.

Both quran and the Bible call for God worship as the one and only one God. Both calls for good morals that lead to good life. Refer to related question below

Another Answer:

Many stories in the Quran are similar to those in the Bible, but differ in important details. Most Jews and Christians recall that God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac (cf. Genesis 22), but stopped him at the last minute after Abraham had demonstrated his obedience. A version of this story also occurs in the Quran (Sura 37:90-122), but Muslims believe that Ishmael, not Isaac, was offered for sacrifice.

The reader must remember that the Arabs of Muhammad's day understood that they and the Jews were fellow Semitic peoples, descended from Abraham. The Jews came through Sarah's son Isaac, the Arabs through Hagar's son Ishmael. Scripture explains the relationship between these two brothers: "And as for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year" (Genesis 17:20-21). God made His covenant through Isaac's descendants, though Ishmael too was blessed. The Bible tells us of Ishmael's nature and his role in a continuing conflict: "He shall be a wild man; his hand shall be against every man, and every man's hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren" (Genesis 16:12). The descendants of Isaac and Ishmael are brothers, but these peoples have been party to a bitter rivalry from the first.

Though Muslims accept Jesus as a great prophet, they do not believe Him to be the Son of God. This is quite distasteful to them at a minimum as they believe God is God and there is no other or need for a son. Some have suggested that the revelation to Muhammed in the cave in 610 AD via the angel Gabriel was in fact heavily influenced by the merchant interactions he had in Mecca and Medina at that time. Futhermore, the then idea of a trinity involved Mary, the mother of God which was totally rejected by the Islamist (rightly so as there is no Scriptural support for a trinity much less with Mary involved). Whatever the case, there are similarities as well as differences between the two. Let the reader decide :)

How did Qur'an start revealing on Rasoolullah Mohamed saws?

Answer

Qur'an was revealed on Rasoolullaah (saws) by Allah (God) through the Angel Gabriel (Jibra'eel or Jibril) (as). The first revealed verse was from Suratul 'Alaq (Quran, chapter 96) in the mount cave of Hiraa (Ghaar-e-Hiraa) in Mecca (Makkah) in year 610 AD.

Hazrat Jibra'eel (as) used to appear before Rasoolullaah (saws) as a man named Dahya Kalbi. Rasoolullaah (saws) was frightened when the first verse was revealed onto him. At that time Maulaatana Khadeejatul Kubraa (as) calmed him down and pacified him.

God Quran revelation on prophet Mohamed (peace upon him) continued from year 610 Ad until the prophet death in year 632 AD in Medina (in the current State Kingdom of Saudi Arabia).

Why don't the Children of Israel read the Qur'an to discern truth from falsehood since for true believers there is not a single word that can offend any naturally upright and honest person?

Many Jews have read the Qur'an and they consider the book to be at best a good example of Arabic poetry and at worst a condemnation of Jewish people, Judaism, and the Jewish faith. The question comes from the perspective that the Qur'an is so holy and so perfect that any person who reads it will be instantly converted to Islam; but this is not the case. Additionally, there are many words that can offend naturally upright and honest people when those words are followed by violence. While it is true that most Muslims are loving and peaceful people, it would be a failure to note that words have an incredible power to convince people to do heinous acts.

Aside from the fact that Jews believe that it would be impossible for Mohammed to have been endowed with prophecy since he was born over 800 years after the death of Micah, the Qur'an is viewed by Jews as a false copy of their pre-existing traditions.

The Qur'an's Nature as a Composite Document

The Qur'an is a composite of several previously existing traditions that Mohammed merged and aggregated. Probably the most central basis of the Qur'an is Jewish tradition. This does not mean that the Qur'an lifted phrases only from the Bible, but rather that the Qur'an repeated stories or paraphrases of Jewish sources the commented on the Bible and that existed by 500 C.E. -- over 50 years prior to Qur'anic Revelation.

Some of these verses include:

  • Q: 5:31 which corresponds to a story in Targum Y. ben Uzziah -- A raven scratches the ground to tell a dumbfounded Cain how to dig a burial pit for his murdered brother.
  • Q: 5:32 which corresponds to Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5 -- This is the famous line that killing one person is like killing the entire world. Both specifically related this story to Cain because the bloods of Abel cry out.
  • Q: 21:50-71 which corresponds with Midrash Breishit 38:11-13 -- Abraham is breaking idols in his father, Terah's workshop. The idolmakers get furious and demand that Abraham be punished. Abraham protests saying that the idols are meaningless because there is only One God and He is not in the idols. The idolmakers decide to burn him alive for desecrating the idols, but Abraham miraculously escapes being burned alive.
  • Q: 24:24 which corresponds with Chagigah 16, Taanith 11 -- Both sources allege that the various body parts (specifically hands and feet) of a person will testify against him when he arrives in heaven by literally speaking to God.
  • Q: 27:16-44 which corresponds with Targum Esther -- Solomon speaks to a large and powerful bird who informs him that there is a Queen in a remote land, which happens to be the Queen of Sheba in Ethiopia. Solomon demands that the bird bring her a message to come and treat with him. The Queen complies and believes Solomon to be a very wise king.

In addition to the numerous Qur'anic verses that have origins in Jewish belief, the entire system of Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh) is modeled in the same manner as Rabbinic scholarship. Holy Texts are read and interpreted to give meaning and discretion to current situations and these are debated by jurists (Faqih) until such a time as an answer is created and a religious decision (fatwa) published. (Judaism is the same, but replace Fiqh with Oral Law, Faqih with Rabbi, and fatwa with responsum.)

Additional similarities between the religions include that both Judaism and Islam reject the Trinity as the Godhead, are based in orthopraxis (doing over believing), have a form of religious jurisprudence based on their holy books, have dietary restrictions, and pray in distinct holy languages at set intervals during the day.

Qur'anic Assaults on the Dignity of Jews

There is a negative Qur'anic impression of Jews, which portrays them as greedy, selfish, untrustworthy, and as violators of God's laws. While it may be that these verses are directed specifically at Banu Qurayza and Banu Qaynuqa (the Jewish Arab Tribes of Medina that gave Muslims problems), these verses do not clarify that; only knowledge of Mohammed's life in conjunction with the revelation show that. See the relevant verses below, all translations from Sahih International:

Jews have been cursed as apes

Q: 2:63-66: 63 And [recall] when We took your covenant, [O Children of Israel, to abide by the Torah] and We raised over you the mount, [saying], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that perhaps you may become righteous." 64 Then you turned away after that. And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would have been among the losers. 65 And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the sabbath, and We said to them, "Be apes, despised." 66 And We made it a deterrent punishment for those who were present and those who succeeded [them] and a lesson for those who fear Allah.

AND

Q: 4:47: 47 O you who were given the Scripture, believe in what We have sent down [to Muhammad], confirming that which is with you, before We obliterate faces and turn them toward their backs or curse them as We cursed the sabbath-breakers. And ever is the decree of Allah accomplished.

Jews are incredibly greedy

Q: 2:96: 96 And you will surely find [the Jews] the most greedy of people for life - [even] more than those who associate others with Allah . One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And Allah is Seeing of what they do.

Jews and Christians actively conspire against Islam

Q: 2:109: 109 Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allah delivers His command. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.

Jews are almost all deceitful

Q: 5:13: 13 So for their breaking of the covenant We cursed [the Jews] and made their hearts hard. They distort words from their [proper] usages and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded. And you will still observe deceit among them, except a few of them. But pardon them and overlook [their misdeeds]. Indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

AND

Q: 62:6-8: 6 Say, "O you who are Jews, if you claim that you are allies of Allah , excluding the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful." 7 But they will not wish for it, ever, because of what their hands have put forth. And Allah is Knowing of the wrongdoers. 8 Say, "Indeed, the death from which you flee - indeed, it will meet you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you about what you used to do."

Jews kill Prophets and disdain Divine Mandates

Q: 5:70-71: 70 We had already taken the covenant of the Children of Israel and had sent to them messengers. Whenever there came to them a messenger with what their souls did not desire, a party [of messengers] they denied, and another party they killed. 71 And they thought there would be no [resulting] punishment, so they became blind and deaf. Then Allah turned to them in forgiveness; then [again] many of them became blind and deaf. And Allah is Seeing of what they do.

Jews associate partners with God

Q: 9:30 30 The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah"; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allah ." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved [before them]. May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?

(Of course, it is worth noting that no scholar has found any historical evidence for Jews saying that Ezra/Ozair is a son of God. This is a claim made only by this Qur'anic verse.)

What kind of slavery does the Qur'an allow?

What are the three classifications of Hadiths and what do they mean?

The Hadith literature was aggregated 150 years after the death of Muhammad and the major Islamic scholars or 3ulemaa (علماء) noted that numerous things crept into the Hadith literature that were clearly not from Muhammad's life or his views including: Zoroastrian Proverbs, Jewish Psalms, provisions for increasing the flour content of cookies (you cannot make this stuff up), etc. Recognizing the prevalence of these forgeries, there are three classifications of Hadith literature in Traditional Islam developed: da'if (ضائف) - weak, hassan (حسن) - good, and sahih (صحيح) - pure/healthy. They classified the Hadiths by their chains to transmission, the amount of different transmission methods that they went through, and how likely they would have been to have occurred.

For example, the Hadiths listed above (Zoroastrian Proverbs et al.) were seen to be da'if - weak. The Hadith collectors worked with 300,000 Hadiths and saw less than 10% of them to be sahih - pure and therefore worth following. Those collections became named "Sahih" followed by the collector's name, i.e. Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih al-Muslim, etc.

What is a quran?

The noble Koran is the book of God revealed by the angel Gabriel to prophet Mohammed (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), it is the word of God to his apostle (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) including everything a Muslim needs in his life, describing everything will happen to him in the hereafter, showing the great favors prepared for believers and the great torture prepared for disbelievers, the Koran is as God says:

"It is sent down by One Full of Wisdom, Worthy of all Praise (God)" Surat Fosselat, Verse 42.

The apostle (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to get it by revelation and when it was coming to him he felt a sentimental status seen by all people around him, after that he says the verses revealed to him by God, soon the people who could read and write amongst his companions receive them and write them down on pieces of leather or bones or stones and add them to each other according to his orders (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), following the instructions of Gabriel, he used to tell him the places of verses when revealed to him. He used to recite all revealed Koran upon him once a year in Ramadan, in the year he died he recited the whole Koran twice upon him in the month of Ramadan, this is among the secrets by which God protects His book.

Some people allege that Prophet Mohammed wrote the Koran by himself, this is a weak plea doesn't depend on a single true evidence. The prophet was an illiterate man, he didn't know how to read or write, he wasn't educated in a university or by teachers, he only left Mecca twice to trade in Syria, he never gone to universities or to learn at nearby towns. Then how did he get the history of previous nations and the news of the following ages and these great legislations that astonish modern scientists as they match the modern actual life? How did he know the most recent scientific theories only discovered nowadays? How did he analyze the human soul and mentioned emotions and obsessions inside man whereas psychology and its theories only appeared at this time?

Many other things also assure that these words are the talk of The Creator and The All Powerful (God).

Which type of religion is Islam?

It is a religion of monotheism.

Refer to question below for more information.

What is the religion of hazrat musa as?

The religion of prophet Musa (Moses) is Islam per Torah revelation to him by God. Islam is an Arabic word that means Submission to God, the one and only one God. That is why it was the mission of all God prophets to call people to Islam.

  • Islam per God revelation of Torah to Prophet Moses (Musa) is called Judaism,
  • Islam per God revelation of the Bible to Prophet Jesus (Isa) is called Christianity, and
  • Islam per God revelation of Quran to prophet Muhammad is called the very name Islam.
  • Prophet Ibrahim who submitted himself towards God the creator, thus Ibrahim's religion was Islam and he claimed himself as Muslim, claimed himself as "hanifa" the worshiper of Allah alone.

Muses holds ancestry form prophet Ibrahim and followed the same religion, that is submission towards God the creator, he was honoured by God to have received divine revolution the book Tawrah or torah. Muses delivered his mission as messenger of God, at the time he acknowledges from the divine revolution that Isa the son of Mariam will be the messenger of Allah yet to come and also acknowledges that prophet Muhammad will be the last messenger of Allah, all these messenger has followed the same path; submission towards God the creator, worship Allah alone that leads the development of human characteristic and quality in life within human kind, thus the religion of all these prophets is the same that is Islam, means acceptance of the truth and devoted for establishment of Justice.

Christianity is a mystery! developed long after prophet Isa the son of Mariam was lifted up physically on to the heaven alive.
