Find the screw located on the cooling pipe and using a screwdriver turn it half a turn. Do this whilst the engine is running and you will hear a "hissing sound" (air) exiting from the screw. DO NOT REMOVE THE SCREW COMPLETELY. Keep listening and watching until water comes out. The water that comes out should be luke warm depending on how long the engine has been runnning and it may shoot out fast so be careful. Once water exits turn the screw back on, and top up the water levels. If your finding it difficult to get rid of the excess air then squeeze the water pipes in a pumping motion every few second which should make the air travel around the pipes easier. Dont forget to top up the water level to the maximum line when your complete. Having the heater on in the car full you should now start to feel the heat come through. Ps. whilst doing this don't have the fan on inside the car, a) it wont do anything in the process and b) it will only make a sound distracting you from the job at hand. The only issue on this subject is finding and locating the screw to undo.

Alternatively if your really struggling ...this next option will either work or not. Where the water reservoir is (where you top up the water) leave the lid off, start the car and leave it running for approx 30 mins. This "should" naturally let all the air out of the system. After 30 mins put the lid back on, checking the water level and if your really lucky it will have drained the air out by itself.

If you still have no heat then check the thermostat temp inside the car, if its not moved from the cold mark then chances are you need a new thermostat (cheap to purchase, pain to fit...will require a garage or else you will break the gaskets. If the fan inside the car doesnt work then its a fuse, check them and replace accordingly. If the thermostat inside the car is well over the halfway mark then get the car to the garage asap as the engine is rapidly overheating and you may just as well purchase a new car for the amount of damage its causing.

If the heater is running normally on full speed then the likely cause is that the resistor block needs replacing. If you have a Mk 1 then it may be the switch on the fascia panel as it was used to switch the current to each resistor. The Mk 2 replaced the heavy current through the switch by using relays which are distributed around the car in various fuse boxes for some reason. Two will be found under the bonnet.

The resistor block itself is mounted adjacent to the blower motor and is almost totally inaccessible without some dismantling of the fascia.

In the Espace III (1997 - 2002) it is under the drivers seat and is the very devil to get at. This is intentional; makes it impossible to steal. The 'facia' is of course in the speedometer unit and if it is hard to see change the bulb at the back of the speedo. The bulb is described as a "wedge" T10 and you should use the 3W version of this bulb. Most motor factors tend to stack the 5W which will overheat. If you have a tape it is in the dash and a CD is near the rear door left side.

There is a cover secured by 4 bolts located at the top of the shock absorber directly under the windscreen wiper arm. Remove that then you can access the 3 nuts that secure the shock absorber top plate at the top of the shock absorber. Support the shock absorber while undoing the 3 nuts after undoing all the lower bolts ( at the caliper / disc end). You may have to disconnect one side of the disc to allow it to swing for access. Use the proper spring compressor tools (spring under extreme compression!) to compress spring to allow for removal of top 3 bolt plate so to change spring after removing shock absorber from vehicle. Assistance probably required to help locate the top plate / 3 nuts on refitting.

I assume that you are referring to hot water radiators, heated by an oil furnace.

These radiators could have air in them and will not allow the hot water to fill them and give off any heat. If these are connected to the same hot water line that feeds the other working radiators, the in and out lines and the bottom on the cold ones should be hot. These radiators will then have to have the air bled out of them. They should have a valve on the top somewhere to do this.

If there is no heat in the lines there must be separate line to that room that is plugged or shut off.

Use the central locking button inside car, then get out of passenger side and use key in lock. Reverse process to get back in. Be careful if battery is low as alarm can go off.

My garage phoned me out of the blue and told me I needed this done to my 5 year old Espace - with dire threats of what happens if the belt fails - they quoted £1500. Can I risk leaving this longer?

It depends on the model. I have a 3.0l v6 one (T reg) and the cambelt and plugs need to be changed at 72000 miles. Because it is the v6 only a main dealer will touch it and they have quoted me £1500 for the cambelt and £720 for the plugs!!!!

I have heard that smaller independent garages will do the cambelt on a non v6 model for around £750.

Mine has currently done 83000 miles and I don't really want to risk driving it until the cambelts changed (£3000 - 5000 for an new engine).

its on the bottom of the gearbox sump. but advise this be done by specialist as it requires diagnostic equipment to get fluid to correct level and pressure else it will go into limp mode
