What is the value and history of a 12 gauge Palmetto Arms Co shotgun?
Palmetto Arms Co was actually a trade name used by the Tryon Hardware/Catalog company in Philadelphia between around 1900-1925. The shotgun was made by one of a few different manufacturers such as Crescent Firearms, Hopkins & Allen or Stevens. Value is mainly as a decoration. Generally considered unsafe to shoot with modern ammunition. sales@countrygunsmith.net
Value is as a decorator piece only - not safe to fire with modern ammunition. $200 in top condition. sales@countrygunsmith.net
It is a Stevens gun, general utility type shotgun. Value around $200 in good condition. sales@countrygunsmith.net
What is the value of a 16 gauge double barrel Western Arms Corp Ithaca shotgun?
In typical used condition (these guns were retailed by Montgomery Wards and generally used pretty hard) these guns will sell in the $300-$350 range. There are a couple of options that add some to the price, namely ejectors instead of extractors or a single trigger instead of double triggers. Mint-condition guns with ejectors and a single trigger might bring $600. sales@countrygunsmith.net
How old is a 12 gauge double barrel shotgun with exterior hammers marked Howard Arms?
Another one of the brand names used by HD Folsom. Look on the underside of the barrels for the Belgian ELG proof. If its not there, it was probably made by Crescent Firearms. In any event, the gun will date from 1890-1910 or thereabouts. Please do not attempt to shoot it. sales@countrygunsmith.net
Keystone Arms Co was a trade name used by E.K. Tryon Jr. & Co, a large catalog hardware store in Philadelphia. The gun would have been made during the early 1900's through WW2, and could have been made by any of a number of manufacturers. That serial number leads one to think H&R.
How do you find information on J Stevens double barrel shotguns?
Most Stevens shotguns have a model number on the right side of the receiver (5000, 5100, 3xx, 2xx). If the company name is marked "J. Stevens Arms Co", it was made after 1920 when Stevens became a division of Savage. Sometime in the 1940's the "J" was dropped.
Riverside shotguns were made by Stevens. I'm not sure when they started and stopped using this name, but a Riverside hammergun should be the Model 215 which was produced from 1913-1932.
The Model 215 hammergun was sold as the Springfield-Stevens from 1930-1932.
On the left side of the receiver is:
Springfield
manufactured by
J.S. Stevens Arms Company
Chicopee Falls, Mass. USA
Pat. Feb. 10-1914
How do you find information on a J Stevens Arms Company Model 620 16-gauge shotgun?
Make sure it is a 620 and not a 520. The 520 has a stepped receiver top [similar to a Browning A-5] where the 620 has the smooth receiver top [similar to a Remington 1100]. They are both take down models. To take apart the 520, unload the firearm, cycle the bolt to the rear of the receiver, turn the knurled portion of the magazine tube outward until the nut at the base of the magazine tube clears the receiver comfortably. Advance the action bar/forearm about 3/4 of the way forward..turn the firearm so the receiver is down and wiggle the barrel/receiver union a bit so the barrel/forearm indexes up toward you about 1/8". Then the forearm will slide out and disengage from the bolt and the whole forearm/barrel unit will slide up toward you and away from the top of the receiver. Most of these are 2-9/16" chambers in the 16 Ga. Keep this well oiled and clean as it is an interrupted thread union and subject to fouling. Also after firing, you will have to advance the forearm forward about 1/8" to disengage the bolt and then you can pump another round into the chamber. 2/-1/2" ammo is quite common and fair priced. Gun Parts Corp has parts for these on occasion. That's about all I can offer on this fine 100 yr. old Browning design.
How old are Riverside Arms shotguns?
Stevens used the Riverside name from about 1920-1945.
It was a brand name used by Stevens for Montgomery Wards and other retailers. They still made some exposed hammer guns at least until 1940.
What is the value of Riverside Arms shotguns?
The Stevens division of Savage Arms made the Riverside guns from about 1916 to 1930. It was a second-tier gun to Stevens. Fit & finish may be a little rougher than those with the company name, but still a well built utility shotgun.
It may have the equivalent Stevens model number marked on the right side of the receiver (5000, 5100, 311, etc), but they are all basically the same gun.
If it is a single-shot, value would be in the range of $50-$75. A double would bring $150-$200, if an experienced gunsmith inspects and approves it.
Of course, if it is not worn out/broken/rusted it is worth next to nothing and if like new it could bring more.
Other notes:
Are the hammers on the back of the action or mounted on the sides? The sidehammers are more attractive to Cowboy Action Shooters and decorators, but either a boxlock or sidelock of this era should still be useable.
A 16 gauge will be harder to sell in many places.
Where can you find parts for a Riverside shotgun?
Riverside was manufactured by Stevens, so if you can identify the equivalent Stevens model, you should be able to find parts. Check with a local gunsmith.

What is the value of Syracuse Arms Co shotguns?
I just got through researching this for a friend. Found some on some gun auction sites. depending on condition, its worth is between $200 and $1,300 It really depends on the grade and condition of the shotgun. The Double Gun Journal has had several articles in the last 2 years which would allow you to identify where an individual example fits into models produced. I believe that a high grade model in excellent contition would bring over $4,000. I know of a sale during the last 12 months at $3,000. It was not the best of the available grades.
Stevens made firearms in Chicopee Falls from 1864 to 1990 but the association with Savage did not begin until 1920 and if the gun is marked with both names, it was probably not made until after WWII. If it was manufactured after 1968 it WILL have a serial number, but if made earlier it MAY have one. A utility double barrel that shows some wear but is still functional is worth about $200-250.
Where can you find a replacement hammer for a Riverside Arms shotgun?
Riverside was manufactured by Stevens, so if you can identify the equivalent Stevens model, you should be able to find hammers at http://www.e-gunparts.com/ Or if you still have one hammer (or a broken one) you can take it to a local gunshow and dig through bins of miscellaneous parts looking for a match.
How old is a Riverside Arms double barrel?

What is the value of Shapleigh's King Nitro shotgun?
That patent date indicates it was made by Stevens/Savage. In NRA Good (won't be able to grade any higher if refinished) should be worth around $200-$250 retail. Being a 16 guage may lower the value in some parts of the country.
What is the history of Riverside Arms shotguns?
Riverside was a brand name used by the J. Stevens division of Savage Arms around 1940-1960.
Riverside Arms Co was in business in the late 19th and early 20th century. This company was acquired by the Stevens divisio of Savage Arms sometime prior to WW2. I have a Riverside hammerless flatback 12 ga with a patent date of 1915, still a shootable gun. I have a friend who owns a Riverside with hammers, it also is a shootable gun.
