This name has been used by several companies, but most of the shotguns encountered with this name will have been made by Ithaca around 1930 - 1950. If your father only THINKS it is a century old, I would bet it is one of these. However if he KNOWS it is that old, I have found one listing that says the name was used by Bacon Arms but it does not say whether or not it was used on shotguns. All other references to Western Arms that I find are for handguns.

(which was bought out by Savage in 1920) - These were utility grade double barrel shotguns manufactured between 1877 and 1988. If the serial number is prefixed with a letter it was manufactured after 1949. If there is no letter, it was manufactured prior to that. Thats the best I can do.

Try your local gunsmith. The Riverside is a Stevens shotgun. If you can find out which model it is, you can probably find the wood at Numrich Gunparts

Can't give you an exact date, but Stevens used the Riverside name from about 1920-1945 according to my notes.

An older used utility double barrel shotgun is worth around $200 if it is fully functional, but not in like-new condition.

It depends alot on the barrel - very old shotguns may have a "damascus"barrel. To manufacture Damascus barrels, iron and steel ribbons were twisted together around a rod and heated in a forge (quick and cheap). They're fairly easy to identify by the irregular pattern of short, streak-like marks around the barrel. It might be harder to spot if it's recently been reblued, but you can usually look just inside the muzzle. Damascus barrels are weaker than modern barrels and are not designed for the high gas pressures created by modern ammunition.

A Damascus barrel in good condition can be used if you shoot light loads, but if it's weakened or you put heavy loads in it the barrel may burst slightly ahead of the chamber, which could injure the shooter.

I recently obtained a model 215 Riverside (I think it's a 16 G but it doesn't say anywhere on the gun what it is) and it has a Damascus barrel. Luckily, I found a place to order parts and will be purchasing a new one.

Well, it's AT LEAST 50 years old if it's been hanging in a barn, but it's ONLY 50 years old if it's been cared for. If it looks good and the action is tight it is PROBABLY OK, but let an experienced gunsmith look it over and follow his advice.

I am the owner of a Riverside Arms 16 ga. circa 1913 that i bought at a gun auction for $50 and it has routinely out-performed my buddies new TC Contender 12 ga. which we use for grouse.

I own a 16 Ga. double barrel and it out performs most of my newer 12 ga.shotguns, if kept in good working order a gun can last a lifetime,my 16 double was made around 1913 and has the pat.pending date of feb 10 1914 engraved on the base above the triggers. they are fine shooting weapons,but do to their age I'd have it checkedout before firing it.

Useable pump guns without one of the 3 or 4 biggest names go in the range of $100-$150. Where I live, the 16 gauge will be at the low end of the scale, but I've heard that in the deep South it could double that price.

I don't think Stevens was using the Riverside name as early as 1903 but they probably were still using that patent date into the 1930's. If the gun has fluid steel barrels, it could still be a hunter's gun but the rabbit ears attract Cowboy Action Shooters and interior decorators. Any of these groups will pay $100 to $250 depending on condition.

A SxS in useable but not like-new condition will bring between $100 and $250. A 20 gauge or .410 will be in the mid to upper part of that range and a 12 or 16 gauge in the lower to middle part.

$25 for one useful only as a source of parts. $100 for one that is factory-new. I'm afraid I have to agree. Riverside Arms Company was a trade name used by the J. Stevens Arms and Tool Company on various types of firearms. Single shot shotguns were purely utilitarian, with only the engraved, deluxe Model 195 having any real monetary value.

Unfortunately, unlike cars, firearms walk a thin line when it comes to value. On one side is originality (all original parts and components) and the other is functionality (whether or not the gun works). Guns with high collectible value like the Trapdoor Springfield are worth a lot more with original parts, even if it is beat up and the stock is broken in half. Your gun leans toward functionaly. Savage made a lot of 103's and it's not exactly a highly sought after collectible. In good shape I would offer no more than $100 for it and would probably just keep it if it had any sentimental value to me.

It depends on the model and how well taken care of the firearm is. I collect Stevens shotguns, so very few are worth more than a 300 dollars. Most doubles side by side in any gauge that are in good shape usually go for around that. The model 240 over under .410 is worth about 500 dollars if is in great condition. Yes, many individuals can tell me the value of an H D Folsom double, but I won't pay attention because I don't have one nor do I anticipate getting one in the future.

Riverside Arms was a trade name used by J. Stevens Arms division of Savage Arms. The Stevens historian could probably tell us (for a fee) when the first and last guns marked Riverside were produced, but it would be somewhere close to 1920 and 1950.

The Riverside trade name was used by J. Stevens from 1915-mid 1940's. You MIGHT be able to get a precise date by contacting the Stevens historian. savagearms.com should have his contact information.

I have a 1913 model 16 ga riverside arms shotgun . all it says , is the date made and company so on mine there is no ga. indication .

If you have the model number, quite a few firearm fora have collectors and fans with information. They're generally not worth more than $200 or so. In good shape, they can be very reliable shooters, and lots of spare parts exist.
