What can you do for a painful dry socket?
If it is a true dry socket, you can go to the dentist that removed the tooth and they can pack the whole with medicated gauze. You can also try putting a tea bag over it and firmly but gently biting down. Just a little more pressure than is needed to hold the tea bag in place.

Can the dentist reuse your old gold crown on the same tooth after a root canal?
depends on the reason the crown had to be taken off
if it was for caries the crown should be replaced
if it happened just because the pulp started hurting but with no caries involved he might be able to glue the crown with temporary glue preform the root canal and then glue it again permanently -though he will have to add a `core` to the tooth too.

Difference between DMD and DDS?
The degrees DDS and DMD are the same and earned by by attending an accredited Dental school. Initially Dental schools in the United States were not associated with any university setting, rather were separate colleges scattered throughout the US. The original degree the awarded was DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery). Harvard university later decided to form a Dental school. However Harvard only awards degrees in latin, thus they decided to change the degree to DMD - Dentariae Medicinae Doctor (Doctor of Dental Medicine). Throughout the years the smaller separate schools scattered throughout the US basically merged with the States Universities and continued to award the DDS degree. If a University system starts a Dental School they can decide to award the DDS or DMD degree, however most elect to award the DMD degree.
In regards to training, DMD and DDS are the same, all licensed dentist in a given state must pass the same test and have the same schooling to practice dentistry.

Should A 5 year old have A root canal done on A baby tooth that he will lose eventually?
Usually root canals are not done on baby teeth. If a big cavity has reached the pulp of a baby tooth, a pulp treatement is then indicated. This means cleaning part of the nerve in the pulp, putting medication inside and then restauring the tooth with either a filling or a stainless steel crown.
If your child's baby tooth in question has is not moving and is not due to fall out soon on its own, then you are very advized to repair it with pulp treatment.
If you extract a baby tooth too soon, you will get two complications:
1- The adult tooth underneath will erupt much later.
2- The other teeth will shift and come forward, leaving less space for the remaining teeth, which will cause a malocclusion.

2008 UPDATE Travel, Dental Care and Dental Tourism There is a growing phenomena called "Dental Tourism" in which people travel to a destination that offers less expensive dental care. The decision to visit another country for dental care should go beyond simply comparing prices or even evaluating the dentists' expertise. Countries differ in their standards for infection control and safety. The use of fresh gloves, sterile instruments and safe water are not standard practice in all countries. Without these precautions, patients could be infected with diseases such as hepatitis B. Before considering such trips, it is important to be prepared by using information such as that contained in OSAP's Traveler's Guide. Additional information may be obtained at www.ada.org, www.iamat.org and www.adse.co.uk. Washington Dental Clinic, Ave. Lerdo 746, 1-800-538-6492, 1-800-813-7862. Washington Dental office in Tijuana at 1673 Ave. Revolucion. 1-800-818-7615. I don't know if they do implants or veneers, but at the moment 1/21/2008, they only charge $195 for a porcelain crown and do quality work. Cleanings are $20. The staff speak English and you will be impressed. I have been going there for 10 years. Answer 1-800-207-9223
Is irrigation necessary for periodontal root planing?
I am a registered dental hygienist (RDH) licensed in the state of Oregon to perform many dental procedures including periodontal scaling and root planing (PSRP). I graduated from Dental Hygiene school in 2004, and at that time we were not being trained to routinely irrigate during PSRP. However, I know that over the years opinions have varied on this topic, and the "standard of care" has gone back and forth with regards to how effective (and therefore necessary) irrigation really is. I don't know if this question is from a dental professional, or a consumer, I will answer as though it is a consumer (patient) asking. Using my knowledge of periodontal disease and the treatment modalities currently available to us, I can't think of any reason why irrigation would be harmful or detrimental to your treatment. Usually, Irrigation would be performed with a solution called Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.12% (Peridex). Peridex has been proven to kill periodontal pathogens (the bacteria that cause perio) so my personal opinion is "It sure won't hurt. Why not?" However, in my clinical practice, I don't routinely perform irrigation in conjunction with PSRP unless the procedure was particularly messy or difficult. Simply because, that's not how I was trained. Now, if you are being charged an additional fee for the irrigation, well, I don't know what to tell you. If the fee is small (like $20 or less) then it might be worth it. Otherwise, if it was myself or my family I would recommend saving your money and buying a bottle of Peridex (prescription required) and rinsing with peridex 1-2x a day for the first 6 weeks following PSRP. This has been proven to give better results than PSRP alone.
WARNING THOUGH: Continued use of Peridex will probably cause black/brown staining on your teeth. The good news is that 90-99% of that stain is removable with a professional polish.

Does medicaid pay for root canals partials or crowns when pregnant in the state of Louisiana?

Mouthwash with alcohol in it expires too. I have Listerine and it has an expiration date on it, and it does contain alcohol.
If after two years, you are still having headaches from your tooth, you need to visit your dentist. There could be nerve damage from the bad tooth or root canal procedure.
Why has the tooth turned pink after root canal?
Your tooth should not be a color pink after a root canal! If the center of the tooth is a slight pink that could just be the (gutta percha) which is a rubber base material the dentist fills in the canal with, this take the space where the nerves use to be.. Gutta Percha color is pink... After a root canal and the gutta percha is packed in the canals, the dentist will then fill the center of your tooth with a white or silver filling. If you are not satified with the results simply ask you dentist to put a bit more white filling material on your tooth to hide color of material....most of the time dentist are ok doing that. Can you take cipro for a tooth infection?
A tooth infection is caused by a few specific bacteria that require a specific antibiotic or bactericidal substance. Cipro may work on some but not on others and is not a good idea unless you know exactly which bacteria are the cause of your tooth infection as a waste of time. Many tooth infections may be resolved with Anacardic acid ( found only in Cashews) as this is lethal to gram positive bacteria and worth trying (no side effects unless you are allergic to nuts). Look this up for research articles. Rinse your mouth with some Sea salt, baking soda, and a wee bit of hydrogen peroxide mixed in min 10X warm water and spit out. - DO NOT SWALLOW. It will help. Importantly, go to the dentist to at least FIND OUT if it is the tooth, or something deeper into the gum an abcess or gum disease. Then look this up online to see if you can do something yourself or you may have to get professional dental care somehow - the sooner the better.
Ciprofloxacin is not commonly prescribed for dental infections. However, it may be used for certain mouth or periodontal (gum) diseases. First, a culture and sensitivity test will be done. This will show the best antibiotic to treat the infection
