How has the Rosetta stone helped historians to understand Egypt 's past?

The Rosetta Stone is, quite simply, a carved stone that helped decode hieroglyphics. It is a dark grey-pinkish stone of granite, although it was originally thought to have been basalt. It was discovered on 19 July 1799 by French Captain Pierre-François Bouchard during Napoleon Bonaparte's campaign in Egypt. It is an irregularly shaped stone inscribed with ancient writing, and is so named because it was found near the town of Rosetta, about 60km north of Alexandria.

The stone contained fragments of passages written in three different scripts: Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics and Demotic Egyptian. The Greek passage stated that all three scripts were identical in meaning. Because Greek was well known, the stone was the key to deciphering the hieroglyphs, a language that had been considered dead for two thousand years. Twenty five years later, French Egyptologist Jean Francois Champollion successfully deciphered the hieroglyphics, using the Greek as a guide. This enabled further study of Egyptian hieroglyphics which had previously been indecipherable. The Rosetta Stone became an important bridge to understanding the history and culture of ancient Egypt.

How did Jean Francois Champollian succesfully decipher the Rosetta Stone?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Jean-Francois Champollion used the "Rosetta Stone" which is a stone tablet discovered by Napoleonic soldiers in 1799. The stone records a decree of the pharaoh Ptolemy V in three languages - Egyptian hieroglyphs, Egyptian demotic script and Ancient Greek.

By comparing the three languages, Champollion could assign sounds and meanings to the hieroglyphs, thus identifying the hieroglyphic alphabet and grammar structure as well as laying the foundation for a hieroglyphic dictionary..
he knew Greek and he knew ancient Greek. so he matched the Greek to the ancient Greek and then he matched the ancient Greek to the hieroglyphics.

Does Rosetta stone teach you to speak fluently?

Asked by Wiki User

I have never used Rosetta stone but i am guessing, that it might help. I am a fluent speaker of Spanish, because I was in a Spanish immersion school, or a school where all of your classes are in Spanish (besides English of course) but that took years. if you are persistent and really study then it would absolutely help. but if you are like me then no it wouldn't help. I have tried learning other languages on programs similar to Rosetta stone but its been really hard and didn't help much. i think it really depends on the kind of person you are.

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It provided the first chance to understand Egyptian Hieroglyphics writing by providing the same text in Hieroglyphics, Demotic, and Greek. Both the Greek and Demotic could be read to find out what was being said on the stone, the Hieroglyphics could then be compared and analyzed for patterns (similar to the way codes and cyphers are broken).

The ROSETTA STONE was the key to unlocking the meaning of the Egyptian language.

The Rosetta Stone got its name from the village that it was found in; Rosetta or Rashid.
