A controversial media personality, who while he has wrote books and been on television, is best known for his talk radio show. He espouses a populist conservative Republicanism, with some overtones of libertarianism and nods to more Bible based Christianity. As his billboards pun, "Rush is Right!".
While very popular amongst his fans, who refer to themselves as "dittoheads" for their practice of calling in just to say "ditto" - meaning, "I agree with you completely, Rush.", he has plenty of detractors.
His political philosophy aside, the most noted criticisms involve scandals with chemical dependencies, and less fairly, his weight. He has also been criticized for his errors and inconsistencies, at least such as his detractors perceive him to have made. A neutral examination of his show would reveal only routine errors and the normal deliberate half truths that tend to slant things in one's favor. As such, they are only somewhat more egregious than other media personalities advocating opposite ideological viewpoints.
By any standard, he is objectively more of a "showman" then an educator, and a partisan of the Republican Party that overlooks any of it's mistakes or flaws. To cite but one example, Mr. Limbaugh has strongly advocated a free market viewpoint that would make Ayn Rand look like a Marxist. In his fervent support of capitalism, he has been quick to jump on any Democrat sponsored bill that meddles in the market.
However, while he's quick to yell "Socialist!" or even "Communist!" on such occasions, equivalently meddling legislation introduced by a Republican will receive nothing but silence, justification, or outright support. Such discrepancies, and the drug difficulties, have eroded his fan base somewhat, though he is still regarded as an influential political power, and sarcastically - but with a bit of truth - referred to as the leader of the Republican Party, a title he denies.
Reports of racism, misogyny and xenophobia are very exaggerated, and frankly, untrue. Just as some Liberal rhetoric can sound anti-God or anti-America while not actually being so, Conservative rhetoric can be similarly misunderstood.
Ultimately, by centrist/moderate standards, he is neither an angel or a demon, but simply very flamboyant and more than a bit bombastic. If there is any commonality between his supporters and detractors, it is that both sides make more of him than he is, or ever could be.

On August 1, 1988, after achieving success in Sacramento Limbaugh moved to New York City and began his national radio show. He benefitted from the repeal of the "Fairness Doctrine" by the FCC that required TV and radio stations to air oposing positions every time someone expressed a political opinion on one of their programs. Limbaugh's radio home in New York City was the talk-format station WABC 770 AM, and this remains his flagship station.

He brought a paper from his personal doctor and based on that he got a classification that prevented him from being drafted.
