How is salvation achieved in the Eastern Orthodox Church?

By being Baptized as a member of the Orthodox Church, believing in Jesus Christ as Lord, God and Savior, and by following the Greatest Commandment, which is to love God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind; and to love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37-40) and (John 13:34-35).

Baptism and Faith are important: "He who believes and is baptized will be saved." (Mark 16:16)

Church membership is important: "And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved." (Acts 2:47)

Receiving Holy Communion is important: "If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever." (John 6:51-54).

What do Russian orthodoxy and Islam have in common?

I would rephrase the question it is not Russian Orthodoxy, the more correct term would be Eastern Orthodoxy. Eastern Orthodxy is a direct representative of the church that was established by Jesus Christ himself. The actual name of the Orthodox Church is One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Catholic meaning Universal and Apostolic meaning directly passed from the Apostoles. Before the Whole Christian world used to be Orthodox their great division came in 1054 when Rome has split from the rest of the church. This is where we begin to look at the Roman Catholic Church as an independent body that is not part of One Holy Catholic and Apostolic church. To answer the question about what are the differences between Christianiy and Islam? There are too many differences the list could go on forever. I think it is more important to see what are the similarities. Islam teaches very similar things as christianity does. Muslims and Christians believe in ONE GOD but Muslims just do it in a different way. Christians see Jesus Christ as a man and God both natures in one. Muslims do not believe in God the man, just the Father Almighty. So in my opinion it is better to come together on one issue than to talk about the multiple differences that cause hatred and evil, which once again is not a part of Christianity or Islam.

What is the significance of the crowns during a Russian Orthodox marriage?

The crowns symbolize the crowns of the Christian martyrs who have given their lives for the Church throughout Church History, and it is to remind the new husband and wife that they should now be prepared to give up their old lives for their new life together, and also that marriage itself entails shared sacrifice which each partner must be willing to accept, just as the martyrs accepted their sacrifice for the church.

Why do you stand in the Russian Orthodox church?

One of the striking differences in Russian Orthodox Church and most of the Slavic Orthodox churches is that inside of the Church people are standing during the Divine Liturgy. Most of the Russian Ortodox churches actually do have the benches that are located on the perimeter of the church by the walls. Anyone is welcome to sit there if they are tired or just wish to take a break. It is mostly designed for the elderly, pregnant women, sick people and so on. For example if a president, your boss, or some one in charge walks into the room or a cabinet you would probably stand up, out of respect or out discipline. The question than is if you are in the church the House of God than is God not worthy enough for you to stand before him? Another thing about Russian Orthodox Church is the idea of everyones envolvement in the church during the liturgy and all other aspects. This envolvement can be as little as taking out a burned out candle from the candle stand. When people are standing in prayer together that unity and envlovement increases. The negative effect that I can see from having pews in the church is that liturgy transforms itself from being directed to God to being directed to the people and that is something an Orthodox church was never a part off. When people are in the pews they seem get a little lazy and the thoughts of communication wiht God are now being tranformed into other activities such as constantly plaing with an IPhone or other devices, instead of hard prayer people seem to lounge around and treat the service as a show rather than a worship of God.

Why is Christmas in Russia celebrated on the seventh of January instead of the 25th of December?

Christmas is NOT celebrated in Russia on January 7th. It is celebrated on December 25th. Of course, the follow up question would be "When is December 25th?"

Pre-revolutionary Russia used the Julian calendar universally, i.e. for government, personal purposes and church purposes. When the Soviet government changed to the Gregorian calendar, the Russian Orthodox Church did not make the change. They continued using the Julian calendar, which is (currently) 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar.

Since Christmas is a religious holiday, it was not celebrated as a Soviet state holiday (focus during the Soviet era was on New Year). As a religious holiday, it continued to be celebrated in churches and in homes, privately, on December 25 - but, the December 25 used by the Church. Even with the fall of the Soviet Union, the Church still uses the Julian calendar.

Think of it this way: Go to Moscow. Buy a newspaper on January 7. Look at the date - sure enough, it will say January 7. Walk into a Russian Orthodox church, carrying that newspaper. As soon as you enter the church, it is, for all practical purposes, December 25. (No, the newspaper will not change the printed date). Any announcements, bulletins, Gospel readings etc. will reflect that today is December 25. Turn around, walk out of the church and, as soon as you exit, it is January 7.

It should be plain to see, but this also means that the date for celebrating Russian Christmas is not connected to January 6 as Epiphany, as Julian January 6 falls on Gregorian January 19, which is Russian Epiphany (usually called "Theophany" in the Russian Church).

When did the Russian orthodox eat?

Not sure exactly what you mean by this question but i will try to answer as best I can. All Eastern Orthodox follow rules for fasting at different times of the week, and year, meaning they abstain from certain foods on certain days or for certain periods of time during the church year. For example, a strict vegan diet is usually followed on Wednesdays and Fridays to help us remember the days on which Christ was betrayed and crucified. We also follow a strict vegan diet for 47 days prior to Easter, and for 40 days prior to christmas, and for shorter periods during several other times during the year. These fasts help us to prepare spiritually for the great feast day which is to come and help us to remember why we are celebrating the holiday, and help to ensure that we do not become too caught up in the commercialism of the holidays. There are also days of strict fasting, such as Holy Friday, when it is customary to abstain from eating until sundown. The secondary purpose of fasting is to teach self discipline, so that we realize that earthly things are of less importance than spiritual things. However, Orthodox feasts and celebrations are joyous affairs, accompanied by beautiful music, and wonderful food, so please don't get the idea that orthodox Christians are a grim, sour faced group. On the whole they are fun loving, warm and hospitable, and a joy to be with. Hope this helps answer your question.
