Why does saltwater pools need chlorine?

All pools need something to help keep it clean and safe. Chlorine has long been the sanitizer of choice. Saltwater is no different, as the charged cell breaks down Salt in the water into Chlorine.

Will a saltwater pool harm wildlife such as birds and rabbits if they drink from the pool?

No, animals will not be harmed by drinking water treated by a salt sanitization system.

The amount of salt in a saltwater treated pool is very low (around 0.5%, which is one-half of one-percent). This concentration of salt is about half as much as a teardrop (1%) and nearly eight times less than sea water (3.75%).

Can a saltwater pool generate enough sanitizer?

yes, germs can live on a public swimming pool. why? because a public swimming pool is used by the public and people have germs on their body and when they get in the swimming pool, the germs on their body will be transfered to the water on the pool, and germs will spread in the water and people will also get germs. after having a swimming on a public swimming pool, you need to take an immediate bath so that germs will be killed.

What is the purpose of balancing tank in reflection pool?

If you have a deck level pool or spa (water level with the top of the pool, that usually overflows into a grating around the pool) when people get into the pool their body displaces water, this water is stored in the Balance tank until the people get out and the water is pumped out of the balance tank and back into the pool. A skimmer pool that has a lower water level than the top of the pool does not need a balance tank as the displacement is handled by the water level rising. Deck level pools and spas are considered more aesthetically pleasing.

Who makes the best salt water system for above ground pools?

Don't trust anyone who tells you a certain brand is best, or gives you best water clarity, etc... All saltwater systems do the same thing, produce pure chlorine sanitzer (Hypochlorus acid) from the small amount of salt in the water.

The difference between brands is primarily how much chlorine it is able to produce in a day: its output. Don't buy a system unluss you know how many lbs/day of chlorine it makes. Most municipalites look for at least 0.04 lbs/day PER THOUSAND GALLONS. Don't buy a system unless you know how many lbs/day of chlorine it is capable of producing, or you may find yourself lacking sanitation capabilies.

The next biggest difference is a salt system's longevity and warranty. The electrolytic cell will wear out. If you have to replace a cell every three years, like some brands, you won't save very much money. There are brands that last 5, 6, 7 years or more.

There aren't many sites out there that do product reviews or comparisons for saltwater pool systems (or salt water chlorine generators, saltwater chlorinators, electronic chlorine generators, whatever you want to call them). I have only seen two sites that have information on ALL brands, and one with product comparisons, they are:

this question is the same as which saltwater pool system is the best?

Magnablu. this is a new system that uses magnesium chloride and potassium chloride rather then the sodium chloride that is presently being used. These salts are good for you and your garden as opposed to the old system. see link below

Is a salt water pool better for eyes than a chlorine pool?

"Salt water" pools use electrolytic reaction to turn the mild saline content of the pool into Hypochlorous acid. When any type of chlorine is added to water it ALL makes the SAME thing: Hypochlorous acid. It does not matter if it is Sodium Hypochlorite (liquid chlorine), Tri-chlor and Di-chlor or Lithium based, Cal-hypo or even gas chlorine--it all makes Hypochlorous acid. Hypochlorous acid is the active sanitizer; this is what kills algae and other harmful stuff in the water. Humans have a salt taste threshold of around 3,500 ppm. Most chlorine generators require a salt content of 2500 - 6000 ppm in the pool. The main difference is that many people, given long exposure to the chemical type chlorinated water, experience red, itchy skin, red, burning eyes, and even discoloration of their hair. Swimming in a mild saline solution is much like taking a shower in soft water. Swimming in a standard chlorinated pool leaves a feeling that the skin dries quicker upon exiting the pool. You may also feel or see a whitish residual chlorine flaking on the skin. In a salt-water pool (one with a chlorine generator) the water feels smooth and your skin feels smooth. The real downside to a salt water system is that it does change the way you do maintain water chemistry. It is very important to follow directions carefully with regard to water chemistry, especially in maintaining a proper pH balance. Too high or too low pH can relatively quickly ruin a vinyl liner. It really is simply a matter of keeping up with the water chemistry and not letting the pH get too high before trying to adjust it. Overall, the water chemistry does get easier, but there is a small learning curve.

How do you superchlorinate a saltwater pool?

Most salt boxes will have a button or knob to add more chlorine which is how you may superchlorinate a salt pool. Otherwise there is no problem adding granular chlorine to a salt pool for it is the same sanitizer just added in a different manner.

What is a salt water swimming pool?

A salt water pool has a chlorine generator on it that turns sodium chloride into chlorine gas. The water in the pool is not like the ocean, you can't taste the salt and it doesn't sting your eyes. The water isn't as harsh on clothing, eyes, skin and hair as chlorine is.

What sunscreen is good to use in a fiberglass pool?

That depends on what is available in your area. whatever you use it wont make any difference where you use it.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a saltwater swimming pool?

You can go for copper ionization technology. It is one the best and healthiest alternative for saltwater swimming pool.

If you are looking to know more about Copper ionization visit Intec America website.

How much salt to use in a 4500 gal pool?

Assuming you have a chlorine generator and actually need to add salt, the amount is determined by the manufacturer of the device you purchased. Looking in the instruction manual will tell you what the required sodium level is for your particular unit (somewhere around 3,000 ppm is typical). Then you must test the water to see what the sodium level is currently. The difference is what needs to be made up. It takes roughly 25lbs of salt per 1,000 gallons of water to go from zero to 3,000 ppm. So you need about 112 lbs if your 4,500 gallon pool is at zero ppm now. Pool & Spa

What causes Loss of salt in a salt water pool?

Backwash's, pool overflowing as a result of rain or overfilling, water being splashed over the side. swimmers taking out water on their body's as they get out of the pool and my dog drinking the pool water.

Do saltwater swimming pools produce the same asthma symptoms as chlorine pools do?

No, but you will get dehydrated, making you breath heavy.

I don't agree that you get dehydrated. The body fluids contain salt so in a plain water pool the body is taking on water because it contains salt.

The fluids prescribed for an isotonic solution to rinse the nose to keep the sinuses from either gaining or losing water would contain about 500 Gallons of salt/25,000 Gallons of water.

A salt pool uses less than 100 gallons of salt/25,000 gallons of water. So the body still absorbs water but less than with a plain water pool. So a plain water pool is more likely to cause the sinuses to swell than a salt pool.

How much salt should be added to 5000 gallon salt pool to raise it by 200ppm?

For a non-INTEX pool you need 50 lbs. of salt for 2,000 gallons. or water capacity in gallons X 0.025.

Can babies swim in a saltwater pool?

it depends on whether the person is salt sensitive or not. in my pool some people say they can taste a salt flavor in the pool water and other people can't taste anything. it also depends on the type of chlorine generator you have installed some systems require more salt than others to operate so if you are salt sensitive look for a system that requires a lower level of salt to operate correctly. my system operates at 2900 ppm to 4000 ppm when i keep it at the higher end of the range more people can taste the salt than if i keep it at the lower end. hope this helps

Can you install a saltwater swimming pool with your existing pool equipment?

Yes you can retrofit a salt water pool system onto your existing pool equipment without too much trouble.

How do you winterize an in-ground saltwater swimming pool?

With the onset of the cold weather, you will need to winterize your gunite pool. Backwash the pool filter. Detach the pump and filter to drain any left over water. Drain the pool heater. Remove return jet fittings, the skimmer basket and pipes. Blow air through the system until bubbles appear in the water and cap off the fittings. Put an empty twenty ounce plastic bottle in the skimmer basket to compensate for freezing and thawing. Remove water from the main drain line and cap it. Remove ladders and floats. Lower the level of the water beneath the tile line.

Can i use copper algaecide in salt water system pool?

Answer : in short yes copper is fine, but...

I have copper-zinc mesh screens in all my collection baskets, i go to rummage sales to find 64' & before silver coins and single pieces of sterling silverware in bad shape; i put that in the baskets too. You can get broken sterling silver jewelry for pennies on the dollar, the cheaper the better. The cheapest sterling silver has the most copper, and turns black quickly. This means it's pretty reactive. Silver and copper in this form with sodium & chlorine ions in a salt water pool, along with the zinc kill off EVERYTHING. The reactivity of electrolyzed water on microorganisms is amazing.

I have a masters in biology from Indiana University and I'm a microbiologist that works for a large Indiana city muni-water dept. I work in a lab setting, i test for all contaminates in the cities public pools, including those found in the public schools.

There is a fellow from my university who uses Cavitation to kill ALL microorganisms in his pool without the use of ANY chemicals, his pool is pure water from the tap without ANY additives!!!

This is not impossible, but it is expensive!! And in a public pool system according to laws in our state it would have to have some amount of chemical that killed bacteria on contact, such as bleach/chlorine.

He is a private individual, If you would like further information just Google, Jet Cavitation, or impeller cavitation, in relation to microorganisms. Also Dynajet, and Hydrodynamic cavitation. This technology has been used for decades in the food processing industry, but if you have thousands to blow, why not.

I have cultured samples from my pool on a regular basis, my levels are cleaner than any public pool I've ever tested. The combination of silver, zinc, copper and the salt water even kills Cryptosporidium.

I have future plans of testing neem and tea tree oil in a pool.

P.S. Copper will stain your pool if you have light colored floor/walls and your hair if your grey or blond, I don't recommend it for newly dyed hair either. If your pool is a dark color you have no worries. Blue dye might help but that has consequences too, things like bluing agents, best of luck.

Do salt systems permanently discolor plaster pool surfaces?

The "salt cleaning system" is not a cleaning system it is a chlorine making system. If you are having plaster problems - look at the method of maintaining other chemicals - pH, Total alkalinity or the person who is supposed to maintain and test the water etc.

How to remove yellow stains on pool steps?

The yellow stains are most likely algae. Superchlorinate and lots of brushing until it is gone. Then brush again. You may want to clean the filter too.

How much salt does a 16x32 pool need?

Our 20 x 40 with a shallow & deep end needs 10 to 12 bags @ 40lbs. each at the start of each season to reach the correct ppm for our chlorine generator. I'd start with 6 and have two more handy. Y ou will need them after a heavy rain anyway... Jim

Is a saltwater swimming pool system cheaper than a regular swimming pool?

Salt water pools produce "chlorine," so it is cheaper. It is also more troublesome. Yugos were also cheaper ... you get what you pay for.

If your chlorine generator is working properly and your salt levels are correct it will work just fine.

Though I have never been in a saltwater pool, my children have swam in several. They swear by it and insisted that ours be saltwater. I trusted their there request and went ahead to pay the extra money for something I know nothing about.

"Are saltwater pools cheaper or Better"? Really its not a Salt water Pool, bottom line is your gonna have saltwater in your pool with any type of sanitizer.Boxed chlorines are produced with sodium.

I like the easy part of the salt generator, less work and worry. Nothing beats a clean clear pool, I have been using generators for over 20 years, today's versions are light years ahead of my first unit in terms of cost and performance, you really get alot with today's modern generators at one huge value.

A chlorine generator is easy, efficient and cost effective. Of course there are cheaper ways to sanitize your pool. Most owners find they like the increased softness from a little salt in the water and it's easier to maintain a clean pool. When your not home it's especially easy and if you happen to go on vacation for a week or two.Your pool professional can recommend and professionally install the right unit for your pool. That also reminds me I know someone who doesn't have a heater for their in-ground pool no doubt they still swim.

Initially the salt system will be considerably more expensive. You have the cost of the salt cell, control panel and the salt for the pool. Over the long run though, the system will pay for itself. Salt is not used up so the only adding needed is what is lost during backwashing the filter, splashing and what people remove with them when getting out of the pool. IMO the salt system is a lot easier to maintain. once you have everything set properly, it will run and produce chlorine on its own. No more storing or handling harsh chemicals. Best part, you can leave for a month and come home to a clean pool instead of a slime pit. For more information visit howtobuildaningroundpool.com

We put in a saltwater pool and the only problem we had was we chose a limestone rock coping. The salt ate away alot of the rock and we've only had the pool four years. So last summer, I switched to chlorine and am letting the salt level gradually lower with backwashing, swimming, etc. Just be sure you use an appropriate coping material with the saltwater pool.
