Saltwater Swimming Pools

Saltwater pools are a cheaper alternative to the traditional chlorine home pool because they do not require as many pool treatment chemicals. These pools are not as salty as seawater and have the same salt content as the human body. Ask questions here about installation, costs and upkeep here.

Do salt systems permanently discolor plaster pool surfaces?

User Avatar

The "salt cleaning system" is not a cleaning system it is a chlorine making system. If you are having plaster problems - look at the method of maintaining other chemicals - pH, Total alkalinity or the person who is supposed to maintain and test the water etc.

Is a saltwater swimming pool system cheaper than a regular swimming pool?

User Avatar

Salt water pools produce "chlorine," so it is cheaper. It is also more troublesome. Yugos were also cheaper ... you get what you pay for.

If your chlorine generator is working properly and your salt levels are correct it will work just fine.

Though I have never been in a saltwater pool, my children have swam in several. They swear by it and insisted that ours be saltwater. I trusted their there request and went ahead to pay the extra money for something I know nothing about.

"Are saltwater pools cheaper or Better"? Really its not a Salt water Pool, bottom line is your gonna have saltwater in your pool with any type of sanitizer.Boxed chlorines are produced with sodium.

I like the easy part of the salt generator, less work and worry. Nothing beats a clean clear pool, I have been using generators for over 20 years, today's versions are light years ahead of my first unit in terms of cost and performance, you really get alot with today's modern generators at one huge value.

A chlorine generator is easy, efficient and cost effective. Of course there are cheaper ways to sanitize your pool. Most owners find they like the increased softness from a little salt in the water and it's easier to maintain a clean pool. When your not home it's especially easy and if you happen to go on vacation for a week or two.Your pool professional can recommend and professionally install the right unit for your pool. That also reminds me I know someone who doesn't have a heater for their in-ground pool no doubt they still swim.

Initially the salt system will be considerably more expensive. You have the cost of the salt cell, control panel and the salt for the pool. Over the long run though, the system will pay for itself. Salt is not used up so the only adding needed is what is lost during backwashing the filter, splashing and what people remove with them when getting out of the pool. IMO the salt system is a lot easier to maintain. once you have everything set properly, it will run and produce chlorine on its own. No more storing or handling harsh chemicals. Best part, you can leave for a month and come home to a clean pool instead of a slime pit. For more information visit howtobuildaningroundpool.com

We put in a saltwater pool and the only problem we had was we chose a limestone rock coping. The salt ate away alot of the rock and we've only had the pool four years. So last summer, I switched to chlorine and am letting the salt level gradually lower with backwashing, swimming, etc. Just be sure you use an appropriate coping material with the saltwater pool.

Will the water in a saltwater swimming pool damage brick around the pool area?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes it will without specific penetrating non-glossy sealers. I am a pool coping and tile contractor. When the salt systems first became popular certain pool copings began deteriorating. Sometimes within weeks of installation, including travertines, precast coping, and Arizona flagstones.

Even though a pool salt system is only 3000 parts per million, (the ocean is about 15,000 parts per million), the salt still absorbs into the coping and builds up with time. When there is a lot of daily activity in the pool like splashing and going in and out, the salt build up happens much quicker. The salt water absorbs into the coping and then dries. When the salt dries it expands 15 times and pops the surface of the coping.

Sealers will have to be put on before the pool is filled because once the coping has been exposed to the salt water it is usually too late.

Two coats of Deck-o-sheild sealer works well, is inexpensive, and goes on easy, but will need to be put on every couple of years. Dry treat 40SK will last much longer but is expensive, and is labor intensive.

Why are your eyes blurry and foggy after swimming in saltwater pools?

Check that the chlone setting is not too high.

This is not a function of a saltwater pool but can happen in any pool. The cornea of your eye will absorb water and swell and this will blur your vision.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of salt water pool systems?

Well swimming poo is never a good thing, I mean it's bad enough if you catch one floating, but when you come across a poo that is actively swimming, you better jump out and run for it! (and this goes for saltwater or chlorine).

What does a salt water system for a swimming pool look like?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Salt systemI purchased one and found the following site in my research http://www.poolplaza.com/pool-school/salt_pools.shtml . I love my salt system and wouldn't haven't any other way. Good luck. How salt generators workIn a nut shell: Chlorine is made from salt, So the Generator splits the salt molacule into 2 parts 1 part chlorine or (sodium Hypochlorite)and 1 part 1/2 salt and the other Hydrachloric or Muratic acid. Therefore adding Chlorine to water and at the same time keeping the PH neutral at about 7.0 unless of course you swim in it and then your pH rises.

Have you tried to shock it? You may also need to test the PH level. Using well water seems like it would be very draining on your well.

Buy some metal out chemical at Wal-Mart in the chemical section. It works great for hard water.

How does a salt chlorinator work?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is short but a nice article on this site

http://www.enceechlor.com/technology.htm

A salt water chlorinator starts with AC voltage whether it be 115 or 230v depending on where you live. then it is converted to 7v-12v dc either through electronic circuit boards or original methods, first through a dimmer (household dimmer works fine, provided it can handle an inductive load, not a resistive load) then through a step-down transformer and then through a rectifier which converts it from AC to DC and then through an Ammeter. this gives you full control over the power and shows an output of chlorine into the pool.

The salt cell receives the DC power and is sent to an anode and a cathode or basically a positive and a negative plate or set of plates depending on what type of salt cell it is. Then a small solution of Salt (NaCl) usually around 3000-7000 ppm is passed through the salt cell and it is basically split up so that the chloride is sent back to the pool which is compressed from a gas to essentially liquid chlorine.

i hope this helped

What plants do well around a saltwater pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

First, what you should NOT plant. Don't plant shrubs or flowers that attract loads of bees unless they are 12-15 feet from the pool edge. I personally love nature's pollinators, but most people don't appreciate bees, or they are allergic to them. With that said, stay away from Caryopteris, bee balm, vitex, etc. Don't plant trees that drop a ton of leaves, such as honey locust. If there is a drought during the summer, they will drop a lot of leaves. Plus, during the fall, cleanup is a lot easier. Don't plant trees that at maturity will cast a lot of shade. DO use a lot of ornamental grasses. They project a sense of flowing in the wind and some give a tropical feel to the pool area. Depending on when you open your pool, you could plant some viburnums (carlesii or juddii) for some fragrance around the pool. Same goes for gardenias and camellias if you live in a zone where they can grow outside all year. If not plant them in containers and move them inside during the winter. How about some sweetshrub (Calycanthus) for fragrance. For privacy, use any tall shrubs. They don't necessarily have to be evergreen unless your pool is open year round. I'm sure there's a lot of stuff that I left out, but these are the basics that I can come up with right off the top of my head. Hope this helps

How do you convert a saltwater pool to a chlorine pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Turn of the salt water chlorination and start adding chlorine the same as you would in an ordinary pool. The salt water in the pool will become less salty over time so you don't have to worry about changing the water. You could tidy it up a little by removing the saltwater chlorinator element or you could just leave it.

Can saltwater swimming pools cause green hair?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

No, the only thing that can cause green hair in a swimming pool is a tremendous amount of metals.. ex: Copper. That can come from your water balance not being proper and the pH bottoming out. It can become very corrosive if the pH is below a 7.0 and will eventually eat at any coated metal in the pool (lights, drop in ladder, etc) If you see any brown spots in the pool that won't brush up, crush up a Vitamin C tablet and rub it on it. Or go to your local Pool store for more information.

Salt water pools are becoming more common as people find that they are a little more refreshing to swim in. Also, as chlorine tends to bother some, salt pools might be a good alternative.
