How do you use muratic acid to clean buildup in cell of a chlorine generator in salt water pool and What are the proportions of muratic acid and water that you pour in to the cell unit?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

To clean buildup in the cell of a chlorine generator, first, disconnect the power and plumbing to the cell. Then, create a diluted muriatic acid solution with a ratio of 1 part acid to 10 parts water. Carefully pour the solution into the cell and let it sit for a few minutes before gently scrubbing the buildup with a soft brush. Rinse the cell thoroughly with water before reconnecting it to the system.

Why does your salt water pool smelly fishy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

To most accurately answer your question, more information is needed. It is nothing unusual for a perfectly healthy salt water tank to smell fishy. However, if you have things in the water that are actively dying, that would also explain the smell. Do regular water changes and as long as things are alive and well and the nitrate levels are in order, you're in good shape.

Is the salt used in a saltwater swimming pool the same as a water softner?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You can use either type of salt, but the salt for pools is better because it dissolves very quickly. 40 lbs bags cost around $6 at major home improvement chains. It is highly recommended to use nothing but pool salt for chlorine generated pools. YOU CAN NOT USE "EITHER" TYPE OF SALT!!! To save a few cents per bag of salt will cost you an arm and a leg in repairs to damaged equipment ( salt generator). Swimming pools and related equipment do not do well when you cut corners on cost. You may be able to do it on a few items but in the long run it will end up costing you more. USE WHAT IS RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER OF THE SALT SYSTEM !

Why does saltwater pools need chlorine?

User Avatar

No, animals will not be harmed by drinking water treated by a salt sanitization system.

The amount of salt in a saltwater treated pool is very low (around 0.5%, which is one-half of one-percent). This concentration of salt is about half as much as a teardrop (1%) and nearly eight times less than sea water (3.75%).

What is the purpose of balancing tank in reflection pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you have a deck level pool or spa (water level with the top of the pool, that usually overflows into a grating around the pool) when people get into the pool their body displaces water, this water is stored in the Balance tank until the people get out and the water is pumped out of the balance tank and back into the pool. A skimmer pool that has a lower water level than the top of the pool does not need a balance tank as the displacement is handled by the water level rising. Deck level pools and spas are considered more aesthetically pleasing.

Who makes the best salt water system for above ground pools?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Don't trust anyone who tells you a certain brand is best, or gives you best water clarity, etc... All saltwater systems do the same thing, produce pure chlorine sanitzer (Hypochlorus acid) from the small amount of salt in the water.

The difference between brands is primarily how much chlorine it is able to produce in a day: its output. Don't buy a system unluss you know how many lbs/day of chlorine it makes. Most municipalites look for at least 0.04 lbs/day PER THOUSAND GALLONS. Don't buy a system unless you know how many lbs/day of chlorine it is capable of producing, or you may find yourself lacking sanitation capabilies.

The next biggest difference is a salt system's longevity and warranty. The electrolytic cell will wear out. If you have to replace a cell every three years, like some brands, you won't save very much money. There are brands that last 5, 6, 7 years or more.

There aren't many sites out there that do product reviews or comparisons for saltwater pool systems (or salt water chlorine generators, saltwater chlorinators, electronic chlorine generators, whatever you want to call them). I have only seen two sites that have information on ALL brands, and one with product comparisons, they are:

Is a salt water pool better for eyes than a chlorine pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wws

"Salt water" pools use electrolytic reaction to turn the mild saline content of the pool into Hypochlorous acid. When any type of chlorine is added to water it ALL makes the SAME thing: Hypochlorous acid. It does not matter if it is Sodium Hypochlorite (liquid chlorine), Tri-chlor and Di-chlor or Lithium based, Cal-hypo or even gas chlorine--it all makes Hypochlorous acid. Hypochlorous acid is the active sanitizer; this is what kills algae and other harmful stuff in the water. Humans have a salt taste threshold of around 3,500 ppm. Most chlorine generators require a salt content of 2500 - 6000 ppm in the pool. The main difference is that many people, given long exposure to the chemical type chlorinated water, experience red, itchy skin, red, burning eyes, and even discoloration of their hair. Swimming in a mild saline solution is much like taking a shower in soft water. Swimming in a standard chlorinated pool leaves a feeling that the skin dries quicker upon exiting the pool. You may also feel or see a whitish residual chlorine flaking on the skin. In a salt-water pool (one with a chlorine generator) the water feels smooth and your skin feels smooth. The real downside to a salt water system is that it does change the way you do maintain water chemistry. It is very important to follow directions carefully with regard to water chemistry, especially in maintaining a proper pH balance. Too high or too low pH can relatively quickly ruin a vinyl liner. It really is simply a matter of keeping up with the water chemistry and not letting the pH get too high before trying to adjust it. Overall, the water chemistry does get easier, but there is a small learning curve.

A salt water pool has a chlorine generator on it that turns sodium chloride into chlorine gas. The water in the pool is not like the ocean, you can't taste the salt and it doesn't sting your eyes. The water isn't as harsh on clothing, eyes, skin and hair as chlorine is.

How much salt to use in a 4500 gal pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Assuming you have a chlorine generator and actually need to add salt, the amount is determined by the manufacturer of the device you purchased. Looking in the instruction manual will tell you what the required sodium level is for your particular unit (somewhere around 3,000 ppm is typical). Then you must test the water to see what the sodium level is currently. The difference is what needs to be made up. It takes roughly 25lbs of salt per 1,000 gallons of water to go from zero to 3,000 ppm. So you need about 112 lbs if your 4,500 gallon pool is at zero ppm now. Pool & Spa

Do saltwater swimming pools produce the same asthma symptoms as chlorine pools do?

User Avatar

Asked by Tiffany2121

No, but you will get dehydrated, making you breath heavy.

I don't agree that you get dehydrated. The body fluids contain salt so in a plain water pool the body is taking on water because it contains salt.

The fluids prescribed for an isotonic solution to rinse the nose to keep the sinuses from either gaining or losing water would contain about 500 Gallons of salt/25,000 Gallons of water.

A salt pool uses less than 100 gallons of salt/25,000 gallons of water. So the body still absorbs water but less than with a plain water pool. So a plain water pool is more likely to cause the sinuses to swell than a salt pool.

Can babies swim in a saltwater pool?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

it depends on whether the person is salt sensitive or not. in my pool some people say they can taste a salt flavor in the pool water and other people can't taste anything. it also depends on the type of chlorine generator you have installed some systems require more salt than others to operate so if you are salt sensitive look for a system that requires a lower level of salt to operate correctly. my system operates at 2900 ppm to 4000 ppm when i keep it at the higher end of the range more people can taste the salt than if i keep it at the lower end. hope this helps
