What causes pain in a persons lower back when they go to reach for something or they bend over?
This could be a number of things related to your spine or even muscles/nerves. It could be your facet joints, vertebrae, discs or nerves - they are the common players for lower back pain. It is always advisable to go and see a Dr if you have lumbar pain, you might have pulled a muscle (they can take 6 weeks to clear up completely). Try cold/heat therapy on the area for a few days and see if you can reduce that pain - maybe you need to exercise your lumbar area - Yoga or Pilates can be good for that. If you cannot reduce the pain, go to the Dr for x-rays or MRI scan so they can disgnose the cause properly.
What causes a swollen submental lymph node?
Common causes of enlargement: Viral infections, HIV, Mononucleosis syndromes, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, toxoplasmosis, dental pathology such as periodontitis.
When you have scoliosis is it common to have one rib be more prominent then the other?
Yes. The spine does not just bend it also twists that pushes one rib forward. I have this problem.
What causes scoliosis not including idopathic scoliosis?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this is actually incorrect. IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS HAS NO KNOWN CAUSE
you CANNOT get it from 'bending over too much'
or 'carrying a heavy bag' you will get it regardless.
other forms of scoliosis however have known causes
yes it happens more in girls than boys, 2% of healthy boys will get scoliosis
where as the percentge of girls is much much higher
when i say healthy boys, i mean boys who have no health problems / disabilities
scoliosis seems to go hand in hand with heart conditions
other muscular diseases such as muscular distrophy / ostrophy etc.
people often perk up at that when i say 'health problems'
note, this does not include any mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety.
mostly just heart and muscle conditions.
(although scoliosis can cause other mental conditions to arise, sadly)
What is disc bulg at L4 L5 and L5 S1?
Bulging discs are fairly common in both young adults and older people. They are not cause for panic. In fact, abnormalities that show up on MRIs, such as bulging or protruding discs, are seen at high rates in patients both with and without back pain.
Most likely, some discs begin to bulge as a part of both the aging process, and the degeneration process of the intervertebral disc. A bulging disc is not necessarily a sign that anything serious is happening to your spine. A bulging disc becomes important when it bulges enough to cause narrowing of the spinal canal. If there are bone spurs present on the facet joints behind the bulging disc, the combination may cause narrowing of the spinal canal in that area. This is sometimes referred to as segmental spinal stenosis. The human spine is made up of 26 bones; grouped as follows: * 7 Cervical Vertebrae - in the neck * 12 Thoracic Vertebrae - that articulate 12 pairs of ribs * 5 Lumbar Vertebrae - lower back * Sacrum - Fusion 5 of Sacral Vertebrae of lower back * Coccyx - 'tailbone' which is a fusion of 4 Coccygeal Vertebrae In between these vertebrae we have our discs (shock absorbers)
Is scoliosis a disease or a disorder?
Scoliosis is a condition which results from asymmetrical growth of the vertebral bodies.
_______________
From Dr. Lamantia:
Yes, it is a disease. Scoliosis is most commonly found in female adolescents between the ages 12 and 14. However scoliosis may also develop in adulthood as a secondary condition to injury or degenerative arthritis. Non surgical treatments such as the spinecor brace-- looks like this (see phtos: http:/www.spinebracespecialists.com/scoliosis_brace.html), or an exercise method such as the Schroth Method (see photos http:/www.spinebracespecialists.com/schroth_method.html) are the best treatments available today.
My mom doesn't have scoliosis but can i get scoliosis?
I have scoliosis and no one in my family has had it. So you can get scoliosis even if its not in your family history. There are 3 types of scoliosis, I suggest looking them up, I unfortunatly have the type that no one knows what's causing it. But the 2 other types are well know and if you have it they can probably do more for you than mine.
How long are you in a cast after scoliosis surgery?
If you have a spinal fusion, which is the most common surgery, you are not in a cast at all, you are wrapped in an ice pack and usually stay in the hospital for 4-10 days.
no that is not true i had surgery for scoliosis where they put 2 rods in my back and a bunch of pins and all of that im pretty sure that is called spinal fusion! and i didnt have to wear a brace afterwards or an icepack it was a tough surgery but i will never have to wear a brace again at least and its almost been 6 months since my surgery and i am already dancing swimming and everything else a kid does so you never have to wear a brace again after scoliosis surgery! and i was only in the hospital for a week! maybe not even probaly 5 days cause i had an awesome doctor!
Is there a way to determine the degree of Scoliosis curvature without the use of x rays?
Not really, no. They use the x-rays along with the cobb angle method to evaluate curves.
When assessing a curve the apical vertebra is first identified; this is the most likely displaced and rotated vertebra with the least tilted end plate.
I have had pain from my back as a result of my scoliosis surgery since I was 18, I am now 32.
It is mainly my discs, my rod is stable and solid, however, my discs are not and are starting to fade on me and giving me a lot of pain. I do agree. although i have not had the surgery, i do have scoliosis and i am always in pain. my doctor says that is shouldnt, but come on....your spine in curiving and twisting, of course theres gonna be pain. Yeah, tell me about it! What rubs salt in the wounds is the Drs always say "scoliosis does not cause pain", well I am sorry but that is rubbish, Scoliosis affects the whole body, not just the spine! And here are two people who are in PAIN!
At over 70 degrees how badly does scoliosis affect your heart and lungs?
Over 70 degrees is really bad! You should get surgery. That is the thing I recommend the most for you. Your spine could crush your heart and organs and you could die. Get surgery!
it all depends im 12 i had the same surgery almost 6 months ago but i have the rods in my back they tried the brace with me cause it works with some people but it didnt help me and i hated wearing it cause i had to wear it 20 hours a day! my curve got worse so i had surgery so the brace may work for him or it may not it all depends on how large his curve is
What does gentle levoconvex lumbar curve mean?
Answer. This is a medical term that simply means: A slight twist of the lower spine to the left while at the same time curving slightly outward, rather than the usual inward curve. It's most likely a radiologists description of a finding on lower back xrays... It could be a compensatory curve to another unusual curve in the opposite direction higher in the spine, like what is described with curvature of the spine. The body always trys to 'balance' the body over the spine... Combined with a physical exam [if norma]l means nothing to worry about... Hope this helps.
Long term pain from Idopathic scoliosis?
Have you had surgery for your AIS and what was the procedure?
I have AIS and had surgery in 1989 with a harrington rod, having pain due to the harrington rod
Bowen therapy can be very beneficial to those prior or after surgery, I have this every week and the results have been very good, I have placed links to a webpage and to my blog so you can read about my progress
What does fairly prominent S-shaped scoliosis mean?
Scoliosis is a 3 dimensional spine deformity where individual vertebral bodies are rotated in addition to side to side curve. S shaped scoliosis is commonly used term when there are two 'C' shaped side to side curves in the spine connected to each other. Usually one of the curves is 'structural' or primary curve and the other one 'compensatory' or secondary curve though both can be structural. The compensatory curve is formed so as to keep the head in center over the pelvis by compensating the curvature of primary curve. 'S' shape can be observed clinically looking from the back but is more obvious on spine Xray.
The terminology fairly prominent is not a correct clinical description but broadly refers to the rotational element of the vertebral body which leads to rotation of the rib cage giving rib hump observed from the back as ribs are attached to vertebrae in chest (thoracic) region. 'Fairly prominent' refers to this prominence of rib hump.
What happens if you bend after a scoliosis surgery?
As long as your movement isn't restricted anymore (after surgery, you'll have various post-operation restrictions that your surgeon gives you), nothing. Your spine will be solid bone where it was fused, so if you try to bend it, it's just like trying to bend your thigh in half - impossible. The muscles required to bend your spine are still there, though, so if you try to bend your vertebrae the muscles will strain to perform the impossible, and it sort of feels like trying to lift an insane amount of weight - impossible.
As long as you're not fused all the way to your tailbone, this shouldn't affect you too much. You can still bend over at the hips or kneel down to pick things up off the floor. You'll have great posture all the time. Most people don't have any problems living with fused spines; I was a varsity captain in tennis and had a fused spine all four seasons (fused T3-L3).
Can scoliosis cause stomach and bowel problems?
I have never heard of anything like that but if your spine is curved at like a 75 degree angle it can effect your breathing. But that rarely happens.
Yes it can, I was diagnosed w/ scoliosis at the age of 10. I wore a back-brace for years, recently (I am now 27), I went to my doctor due to back pain. I have always had stomach issues but never thought the two problems were related until my doctor suggested taking x-rays. I was told that my curve is putting pressure on my bowels and colon, (squishing them), so food and waste are travelling through a smaller area than they should be. She told me I should be eating several smaller meals a day rather than 3 large ones, chew very thoroughly and eat slowly, but suggested I start seeing an orthopedist again for the pain and possible bowel/colon complications. The change in diet has helped somewhat but I am making an appointment with a specialist and will let you know any information I gather but I suggest you speak with a Dr. since they can be related and you can have complications from it. Hope I helped, Good Luck
Can you crack back after scoliosis surgery?
It depends on how much of your spine is fused, but in general it's a bad idea because it puts more unwanted stress on the part of your spine that is not fused, and worse case scenario, if you do it to much you might have to get even more of your spine fused.
How are chronic diseases different from acute diseases?
Chronic diseases are those such as back pain that are characterized by being long-term in nature. Acute diseases are short-lived and generally are cured or run their course within three months. Scoliosis, for example, is a long term medical condition and could therefore be considered chronic. Acute spinal meningitis, however, would be a short-lived infection of the lining of the spinal cord.
What would you concentrate on doing with a client that has scoliosis?
