What is nap on A a light cotton fabric?

A light cotton fabric probably doesn't have a nap. A nap is most noticeable on velvet where it looks different when you run your hand over it one way than the other way. The same is true with corduroy. If a fabric has a nap, it is important to sew pieces together with the nap going the same way. A light cotton fabric, such as a cotton knit or voile, does not have a nap.

Why do people call people dunce?

"Dunce" means a stupid person. It derives from the name of the medieval philosopher and theologian John Duns Scotus. Duns Scotus had points of disagreement with St. Thomas Aquinas, who was the golden boy of Catholic theology at the time (that's why he got to be a saint). Since the popular take was that Aquinas was right about everything, Duns Scotus or anyone who agreed with him had to be wrong, and therefore they were stupid. Eventually all people could remember about "dunses" was that they were stupid, but nobody could remember why.

How do you get the second thread in the belly of the sewing machine up to the outside of the sewing machine?

The "second thread in the belly of the sewing machine" is called the bobbin thread. To pull up the bobbin thread, first make sure that you've threaded your machine (correctly! <grin>). Presser foot should be up. Then pull about 6" of thread and anchor it to the base of the machine with your left hand finger. By hand, crank the flywheel one revolution and voila`, the bobbin thread will pull out. You can use a flat tool to sweep from front to back underneath the sewing foot to get the tail behind the presser foot. Sometimes it takes one or two tries to get it.

How many yards of fabric do you need for a wall?

If you've ever worked with wallpaper, the same calculations will apply. You will need to know the height and width of your wall. For the sake of simplicity, we'll assume your wall is 9 ft high (3 yards) and 12 ft wide. Next, we'll assume that you've chosen fabric that is 60" wide. Since 60 inches = 5 ft, you'll need 3 strips of fabric 3 yards long each to cover the wall completely (9 yards). If you're going to tack the fabric in place, you'll want to cover the outside edges of the fabric with ribbon or some other decorative trim. You'll need to purchase 2x the width of the wall (2 x 12ft = 24 ft = 8 yards) + 2x the height of the wall (2 x 9ft = 18 ft = 6 yards). For our theoretical wall, you'll need 14 yards (plus a little for overlapping; maybe add 1 ft). To be certain your project will work, I suggest you take the measurements of your wall with you to the fabric store and discuss your design ideas with the customer service person. They should be able to help you with the calculations.
