What is stitch length regulator?

The stitch regulator allows you to control both the length and the width of the stitch. The length of the stitch depends on the fabric you are sewing and how small or large you want the stitches to be (for example, if you're basting something together, you'd change the stitch length regulator to a higher number). The width of the stitch is controlled when sewing with an alternative stitch, such as a zigzag.

Why is fabric hemmed?

Fabric projects are hemmed to finish the edge. Without a hem, the edge of a woven fabric can fray or unravel. When the fabric is hemmed (either by folding under the fabric, or by using a serger), the edge of the fabric is reinforced and prevented from fraying.

How do you sew on a button that has fallen off a shirt?

Use the sme color string as the other buttons. Now, look at the other buttons on the shirt, are the dtrings inside the button holes cris-crossed like an x, or are they straightup and down like two parallel lines? Follow that pattern, but start underneath the button so the extra string doesn't show in top. Sew 10 times in each directions and the tie a knot underneath when finished.

Difference between woven and non woven fabrics?

A woven fabric uses fibres that have been spun into yarn and then threaded in and out of each other as a warp and weft using a loom. Bonded fabric used the fibres loose, wet out with a polymer which when dry bonds the fibres together. Felt is a good example of a bonded fabric. As a word of caution: The term Bonded fabric is sometimes used to refer to a woven fabric that has had a coating "bonded" to it to make it waterproof. PUL (polyurethane Laminated) fabric is an example.

Is cotton a natural fiber or man -made fiber?

Cotton is a natural "material" from which many "fabrics" are made, such as denim, broadcloth, and interlock knits.

Cotton is a soft, staple fiber that grows in a form known as a boll around the seeds of the cotton plant (Gossypium sp.), a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including the Americas, India and Africa. The fiber most often is spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile, which is the most widely used natural-fiber cloth in clothing today. The English name, which began to be used circa 1400, derives from the Arabic qutn, meaning cotton.

What do you call the part where the thread goes through the needle?

Put the end of the thread through the 'eye' (hole) of the needle.

But, if you're having trouble:

1. Use scissors to trim the end of the thread at an angle.

2. Make sure your needle is rust free and has nothing gumming up its eye.

3. Dampen the end of the thread, either with your mouth or with a damp thumb and forefinger.

4. Hold the end of the thread between thumb and forefinger so that it sticks out only a little, is pointing at you, and you can see it clearly.

5. Move the needle away from you and onto the end of the thread. You'll have an itty bitty end sticking through.

6. Carefully grasp the end of the thread, and pull through to desired length.

If you're having even more trouble:

1. Get yourself a needle-threader. They often appear in prepackaged sewing kits, and in sewing stores. They consist of a small handle holding a diamond of fine, flexible wire.

2. Put the point of the wire diamond into the eye of the needle, and gently push through. It flexes shut to go through the eye and opens when fully through.

3. Put the end of thread through the open diamond.

4. Pull the diamond out of the needle's eye, bringing the end of thread with it.

If you're threading a sewing machine:

Follow most of the steps above, except that you can't move the needle. Most machines are threaded front-to-back, but it's a good idea to check your manual. If the thread breaks a lot, one of the possible reasons is a needle threaded the wrong way.
