Where did the word batik come from?

"Although the word's origin is Javanese, its etymology may be either from the Javanese amba' ('to write') and titik ('dot' or 'point'), or constructed from a hypothetical Proto-Austronesian root *beCík, meaning 'to tattoo' from the use of a needle in the process. The word is first recorded in English in the Encyclopædia Britannica of 1880, in which it is spelt battik. It is attested in Indonesian Archipelago of the Dutch colonial period in the various forms mbatek, mbatik, batek and batik."

Where can you find the manual for the Kenmore 385 15108200?

I have a 385.19150090 model. Is there a on/off switch or do i have to have the foot controller to stop/start .

You need the foot controller to start and stop the machine.

If you go to managemylife.com and imput your complete serial number, you can download your manual for free.

Your power cord and foot controller are available for sale from Sears online but the foot controller is expensive at about $63.00. You might want to check on ebay or some of the online sewing machine parts merchants to see if there is a less expensive generic one that will work.

What year was White superlock 534 serger model 534W-A manufactured?

It was during the 1980's I am certain. I got my Master's degree in fashion design. The only sergers that were available at that time for the home-sew market was a homely little serger made by Babylock. People that had them liked them. None of my fellow grads students had one, but we were all interested. The first serger that I bought was a White 534 in 1987. (I still have the receipt and I still have the serger. It works great!) I remember that it had been out a little while before that. I can't remember how long. It was listed as the best serger on the market in consumer reports for something like 15-20 years. The 534 was the first easy to thread serger for the home market and was definitely that top serger of its time. Mine will not stop. It is amazing!

What stitches are mainly used with the sewing machine?

The main stitch used is the straight stitch. You will do the majority of sewing with this one. The zig-zag is probably the next most-used one. With a few exceptions, most of the rest of the stitches are more for decorating. Don't be fooled by the "eye candy" on some of the new machines. If you are not a hard-core sewing enthusiast, a simple machine that offers straight, zig-zag, and reverse, is a great starting point.

How do thread a bobbin on a singer golden touch and sew model 620?

The bobbin is wound in the bobbin case. You open up the slide plate and push the little lever with the bull's eye on it all the way to the left. Then you thread the needle with the thread you want on the bobbin, then pull a few inches and wrap the needle thread around the knurled knob that holds the foot onto the shaft (to keep it from slipping.) Then you push down on the foot pedal and the bobbin fills from the needle thread. Don't overfill the bobbin or it won't wind out properly.

What is the antonym for embroidery?

An antonym is a word which has the opposite meaning to another word. Examples would be: "stop" is the antonym for "go," "left" would be the antonym for "right," "black" would be an antonym for "white."

Crocheting is a process of making fabrics or needlework. There is no antonym (opposite) word for "crochet," unless you are talking about the word commonly used when you are pulling out crochet stitches. The word for when you are pulling out crochet stitches would be "frogging" (rippit, rippit, rippit--get it? the sound and process of pulling the stitches out). If you remove knitted stitches, that is referred to as "tink-ing" which is "k-n-i-t" spelled backwards (you are "removing" stitches, therefore, you are going backwards).

What is the raw material of non woven fabric?

Nonwoven fabrics are broadly defined as sheet or web structures bonded together by entangling fiber or filaments (and by perforating films) mechanically, thermally or chemically. They are flat, porous sheets that are made directly from separate fibers or from molten plastic or plastic film. They are not made by weaving or knitting and do not require converting the fibers to yarn.

Nonwoven fabrics are engineered fabrics that may be a limited life, single-use fabric or a very durable fabric. Nonwoven fabrics provide specific functions such as absorbency, liquid repellency, resilience, stretch, softness, strength, flame retardancy, washability, cushioning, filtering, bacterial barrier and sterility. These properties are often combined to create fabrics suited for specific jobs, while achieving a good balance between product use-life and cost. They can mimic the appearance, texture and strength of a woven fabric and can be as bulky as the thickest paddings. In combination with other materials they provide a spectrum of products with diverse properties, and are used alone or as components of apparel, home furnishings, health care, engineering, industrial and consumer goods.
