It is silver plate flatware. The pattern came out in 1953.

It's cheap nickel/copper/alloy untensils that ARE NOT solid silver from Brazil like it says or you think! I have some, keep it in the family if you have had it for a while!

It depends on the individual. I have read somewhere that most left-handed people eat the same way as right-handed people (i.e. with the knife in the right hand). However, I personally do it the other way around.

Considering that most FB Rogers products are silver-plated rather than sterling, probably very little. Check for the pattern number (not 1883, which is part of the maker's mark). The hollow ware sterling registered pattern numbers are 118, 142, 144, 149, 164, 250, 400, 700 and 1636.

You will need to get the flatware weighed and appraised locally to determine the scrap value. You may want to check eBay to determine if the flatware is worth more sold at auction than for its silver content.

The term 'table d'hote' is French, and refers to a meal served to all guests, at a fixed hour and for a fixed price. It literally means "the host's table", or can translate to "the table of the house". Table d'hote meals are found in restaurants, hotels, and other establishments.

If its just small spots of rust, I use a scouring pad (usually metal) whcih removes the rust spot quite nicely without harming the finish of the cutlery.

Rogers Brothers is a silverware company that actually began in the 1820's but apparently used the actual Rogers Bros. name for the first time in 1847. Also, it seems that 1847 Rogers Bros silver plate or at least the trademark is still being manufactured or used today by the International Silver Company. In the late 1800's, Rogers Bros merged with or was purchased by the International Silver Company.

AN AUCTIONEER will probably be able to help. He might know the price that such items are selling for at the momemt, or he might suggest the name of a specialist who might know more about antique silverware.

There are numerous BOOKS to guide antique collectors, and even to guide collectors of antiques. Of course it may depend where you live and the interest for that type of antique silverware in your area. Rather than buying a book, often a library will have a copy of a recent editions that can be referenced.

One can also look ONLINE to such sites as eBay and see if there are similar items being offered. This might provide an indication of current market values.

Apparently, FB Rogers silverware marked China is a knock-off! Buyers - beware!

I used one of these last week. It had slots in that cutlery tray to insert the knife, fork and spoon shafts. Smaller items went under and into the cage.

If new flatware is leaving black marks on food , it is a chemical reaction with the finish on the flatware. Using a soft polishing cloth, wipe flatware after rinsing in diluted vinegar.
