What is the difference between alpine touring skis and all mountain skis?

Alpine Touring, also known as Randonnée, is a type of backcountry skiing. Randonnée ski bindings are a cross between standard downhill bindings (toes and heels locked in) and telemark bindings (only toes locked in). With randonnée bindings, the skier can clip down the heel piece when skiing downhill (like downhill bindings) and release it when skating or climbing (like telemark bindings). Special ski boots are used with both telemark and randonnée; though, randonnée boots have rigid soles like standard downhill boots. Also, randonnée bindings can release during falls, but telemark bindings cannot. And a skier need not learn to turn differently on AT skis, as with telemark skis, since the heel can be clipped down. As for the skis themselves, AT skis are typically much wider and heavier than a basic ski-area ski, as they are used more often in deep powder and ungroomed conditions; though, randonnée bindings can be mounted to most skis. All Mountain skis are a mid-width type of ski, such that the skier can handle well in both groomed and ungroomed/powder conditions--the latter not as well as with AT skis.

Is it bad not to have a goggle clip on your snowboard or ski helmet?

Not particularly.

If you crash, you may be more likely to lose your goggles, causing them to get snow in them, having to look for them, and what-not.

But in general, it's just a optional add-on. If it really bothers you, a piece of tape does the same thing. And if your helmet is a great fit, and doesnt need goggles to hold it in place, some people ski/board with their goggles under their helmet anyway.

Why are some ski bindings no longer supported by the manufacturer - cannot get mine adjusted by a technician - for legal reasons - After just 5 years you must buy new ones?

The manufacturers stop supporting them after a few years (sometimes earlier for certain models) because they start to fail. They're afraid of getting sued by the user if they get hurt. Likewise the technician is not allowed to adjust them, because the manufacturer has stopped covering them, so they're afraid of getting sued as well.

What is the best color to wear if you go skiing?

Most people believe that amber lenses are the best for sports, however, everything looks a different shade of yellow amber, and definitely bright. But, the neutral gray gradient is the choice because the gray lens will not distort color -it only shows a lighter or darker shade of the colors seen.

It depends on when you ride. Amber or dark colored lenses are best for day and clear or lighter colors (like yellow) are better at night.

After a while amber goggles won't distort colors anymore, your eyes get used to them and you see normally again. It depends where you ski. Amber is good all round but in bright sun darker orange, preferably mirrored is better. Night skiing or in fog clear or rose are best. Amber is best in partial sun. Also, in flat light amber will increase the contrast so you can see a lot better.

What are Din ratings for ski?

In skiing the DIN is the rating that tells you how easily your skis will release in a fall. If the DIN is too low your skis can come off as easily as you gettingair (this happened to me). If it is too high they will not come off even if you are rolling, spinning or even somersaulting down the hill (this also happened to me). The DIN depends on how fast you go, your skier type (how good you are), your height and your weight. I am a type three skier( I ski fast and aggressively in other words I'm good) I ski very fast, am 5' 4" and weigh about 145 pounds and my DIN is 6.5. The best racers in the world can have a DIN of 24 but a small child can have a DIN of just 2 or 3.

How do you load and unload a chairlift safely?

Answer

To load onto a chairlift safely first you must have confidence. If you are nervous you are bound to do something stupid, usually by accident. If you are really unsure ask the lifty to either help you put down the bar, or slow down the chair. Usually if you let them know they will help out. Stand towards the hill and twist around with your arm out to where the chair will come. When it comes hold onto the back with your arm and sit. The chair will sweep under you and away you go. If the lifty did not lower the bar for you, do so as soon as possible.

To get off, raise the bar no farther than 10 metres away from the end station. Lift the tips of your skis or snowboard and raise your poles if you have them. Wait until your feet are firmly on the snow and then stand up. Use your poles or push against the chair to get off. Try to go straight and keep your skis parallel.

This is exactly how you are supposed to do it but by far the best way is to go to the local ski school and get a lesson. They will be able to help you better than anyone else and they will usually keep you from getting nervous, therefore avoiding doing something stupid. They have taken an expensive and extremely professional course and then taken an exam and passed it and if they didn't they need to retake part of the course and re-do the exam until they pass. They are extremely good and professional and very much people persons. It is by far the best way to go.
