Any physician (MD or DO) could "prescribe a CPAP." However, it is appropriate to have a "sleep study" performed first. It is best to see your primary care physician first and have him refer you for sleep study and go from there.
Does hypertension cause sleep apnea?
Yes Sleep apnea can cause very high blood pressure. Before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, I had fairly high blood pressure, and having used the CPAP machine which supplies a positive air force into the nose and lungs have allowed my blood pressure to come down remarkably. When you have uncontrolled or undiagnosed sleep apnea, it causes the heart to work quite hard, and increases the risk of getting a heart attack if it is not treated. So if you're experiencing fairly high blood pressure, and the doctor doesn't know why, then ask them about a sleep lab test, or a home sleep test, and that should be able to tell them whether or not you have this disorder.

Who really knows why we get Sleep Apnea, the better question may be...What causes Sleep Apnea? Sleep Apnea, simply occurs because your airway closes while you are trying to sleep! There are many stages of sleep that we drift in and out of. The stages that we are inclined to get our best sleep, the restorative sleep that we all need to feel good, can also cause our muscles to relax and subsequently closing our airway, causing what is called an arousal. This however is only one way this occurs...if you were to look at he throats of many people with Sleep Apnea, you would see that there throats almost seem small or closed, as opposed to some people you could see all the way down their throat, into their lungs almost! The point being that if you have a throat that is more closed than open, you may have a greater chance of having Apneas. The best way to determine why you may have Sleep Apnea is to have a Sleep Test done by a qualified professional. Not being treated for Sleep Apnea could be very serious to your good health!

Our bodies need oxygen every single minute of every single day of our lifes (whether your awake or asleep). If we stopped breathing while we are asleep 2 things will happen: 1. Without oxygen, the cells in our body will stop working and as a result our organs and eventually our systems will all shut down. If this happens, death will result.

Can you scent your cpap water?
Scenting the water in the humidifier is not recommended. You want to keep the water chamber as "sterile" as possible. Meaning you want to keep if free from as many outside contaminants as possible. These contaminants can cause build up over time which can then lead to bacteria growth that is then introduced into the air that is breathed.
However there are several companies out there that sell products which can be scented and placed near the air filter intake, which will scent the air that you breathe. This is called aromathearapy. This should be discussed with your physician or respiratory therapist prior to using though because there may be reasons not use on a patient by patient basis.
Lastly, if you do use aroma therapy, be sure to check the air filters often. They may need to be changed more frequently. Also I would recommend staying on top of your tubing. Cleaning it at least weekly and replacing every 2-3 months as needed.
